Part 27
Devasena impatiently stood at the door. She had never been to this house before. House less, a mansion more. The door itself was impeccably decorated, and she couldn't help adore the beauty. The restlessness she felt was partly soothed by the art before her eyes. A woman opened the door after almost five minutes, opened in the sense, she ducked her head out through a little gap she created.
" Yes? "

Devasena guessed her to be BD's wife.

" I'm BD sir's student. I... "

" But BD sir himself is at the college. "
The woman was definitely not very endearing.

" Yeah.. I know, I actually need to...meet Adway. "

The woman now opened the door completely.
" Who are you? "

Devasena was a bit startled by the coldness and arrogance of the woman. But then she felt that it was natural of any mother or wife.

" I just said... I.. "

" You are my husband's student. But my son's? "
No, this was not much normal. And Devasena wasn't bearing this any longer.

" It's okay, I'll leave. "

" Please don't! "
A voice called from the back.
Adway Mathur stood with a smile, relieving Devasena unreasonably. She smiled back.
" Mom. Meet Devasena. Dad's favourite student. "

The woman glanced at Devasena once again, without any change in the stern expressions. But then, without wasting a second more she went indoors.

Devasena stood quite embarrassed, following her path.
"Please sit Devasena!"

Adway showed a sofa. Devasena slowly settled herself on it. Then without an introduction, brought out the book she just received from the library.
" is this yours? "

Adway looked at it, then settled on a chair.
" That's fast! I never expected you to run upto me directly from white club. " , he chuckled.

" Answer me please! I am already a lot confused. I mean, I never see how you knew I needed this book, and most importantly, how you knew who stole the book. "

" Devasena, maybe you should read the book before I answer anything. "

Devasena stared at him.
" No. I shouldn't. I should rather have more people speaking before me than on my back about me. I am just tired!! I mean, everyone has got many answers to my questions but no one is there to really answer me. Like it is a game where only I'm the player and everyone else sets the rules. I'm sick!!! "

Devasena banged the book on the table.
"I won't read this book ever. Not at all before you tell me why is everything so mysterious. You were just my teacher's son and a wonderful artist to me till date. And now, you are so much more but I still can't have a clue to what you are. Enough. My roommate hides things from me, a person who reigns my subconscious hides things, and now there's one more addition. I'm done. "

Devasena got up.
" Sit down Devasena! I was always against the idea of not helping you out. "

Devasena didn't sit. She rather kept staring at him as stern as possible.
" listen Devasena. I can tell you who I'm and whatever you wish to know. Right now. But with a warning. You will just listen to that much of a story that I know. Because I don't know your story. That's yours to be known completely. I can also tell you whatever I have read in that book. If you don't wish to read it. But I warn you again, you will just listen to another story. And not feel it at all. Lastly, you may leave, without knowing anything. Maybe ignorance is a bliss, maybe not. "

" I don't know what good it'll do to me if I know about my past. Wait a second, were you there in my past as well? "

" I was. In fact, I was the one who... "

" Who? "

" ...killed Amarendra Baahubali. You know that much right? "

Devasena dropped her body on the sofa again.
" You're joking right? You think it's a joke? My goodness! How easily do you say that? You murdered Amarendra Baahubali? You want me to believe that? I mean... " , she went on blabbering.

Adway got up and asked her to follow him. She was already tired, she did nevertheless. Adway took her to his studio.

" Sit here. If my mom hears all these, she'll have convulsions. Anyways, it wasn't a joke. Just that I may not have enough emotion regarding something I've been enduring for decades now, in order to tell that to you in a more mysterious or revealing manner. Yes, I was in your past, like an evil spirit. But my soul retains none of those. "

Devasena stared at him in utter disbelief.
" You too remember everything? "
She sighed. " Only I don't... "
She returned back to being furious again.
" And you didn't care to tell me anything about it! Amarendra, do you even know that Amarendra, the one you claimed to have killed is here, in this very Bhopal as well? "

" I know. In fact I met him yesterday. We had a drink together. "

The studio burst out in a terrific laughter. Adway was startled while Devasena clapped and laughed like a kid.
" wow wow wow! A doctor suddenly flies from London, a sculptor suddenly flies from Paris, they unite in Bhopal and arrange for a picnic named 'we remember the past' , and are desperate enough to pull me into the picnic. What do you think exactly? What am I? A kid? That I'll believe in your stories? I don't believe a word!!!!! You people are bluffing me. You people must have been friends already. You people had already made up a story and are now playing with me... You are bloody liars!!! "
Devasena realised she was screaming.

" Hmm. Now it's my turn to laugh. But I won't. I would rather advise you to return the book to me and live a happy life. Amarendra or I have no intentions to ruin your peaceful life, rather lives, of you and your roommate. By the way, what did she lie? Oh maybe she's bluffing you too, she's also in our team and we have plenty of time to play games with you, only you. Tell me what do you think you are. And why do we need to play games with you. Tell me please! "

Devasena was breathing hard. Because she knew things weren't at all that easily explained. Specially her visions, that were told to her by no one. Yet were extremely real. She got up.
" I need to know everything Adway. Your being Amarendra's murderer won't hold any implication otherwise. "

" It doesn't anyway. Neither to me nor to Amarendra. "

" Really? The past doesn't hold any significance to Dr Amarendra B? But that's the only thing he searches in me doesn't he? Did you even ask him what implications what holds to him? Or are you judging him as yourself maybe? "

Adway stared at Devasena.
" You are confusing me. I thought I get things between Amarendra and Devasena at least in this life. Maybe I actually don't! "

" Stop distracting me Adway!! Are you telling me everything? "

" I can. But I'm sealed by promises. Not that Amarendra asked for a promise, but someone else definitely did. "

" Who? " , Devasena screamed again.

" Mmm.. If I tell you that even, the promise will be broken. "

To this Devasena did a drastic thing.
She immediately took up a scalpel lying beside and hit Adway's hand, cutting it to bleed.

"Ouuchh!! Are you crazy? "
Adway sat down holding the wound.

" Tell me otherwise I'll dig this into your chest! "

" You are insane! "
Adway blabbered.

" I am. I AM!!!!! "

Adway kept staring at her, wriggling in pain and surprised at the fiery woman before him standing with a knife.

Or, was he really surprised?

Part 28

Devasena stood at one corner of the studio.
Adway had brought down a first aid box and was nursing his wound.
Devasena had once or twice asked to help but he didn't budge.
She had thrown away the scalpel long back. And was now in a situation she couldn't herself judge. How did she lose her calm all of a sudden? How did a simple scalpel give her the feel of a sword? And most importantly, how could she just attack someone physically who was not even her enemy? Devasena didn't know.

" Let's go. "
Adway had finished.

" Where? "

" Follow me. You'll know. "

Devasena saw Adway walk out of the studio while making a phone call to someone in a low tone.

They were stopped by the lady at the living room.

" I don't promise to be back by lunch mom, I may have it outside. "

While leaving, Devasena could feel the lady stare coldly at her. Making her shiver from within.

+++

Adway's black Volvo stopped near a gate Devasena knew by heart. He got down and opened the door on her side. She didn't get down though.
" Sreebhoomi? I'm not coming. "

" Are you kidding me Devasena? Just come out I said. You have already tested me. "

Somewhere Devasena was guilty, so she got down.

" Listen Adway. I had said a sorry a million times now to you. And most importantly you should understand that my patience is being tested from day one. Lastly, I'm not going inside because I have decided to cut off with the man who owns this plot, forever. "

" Cut off with the man forever? And still you run to me to know your past? "
Adway now began laughing, frantically. And Devasena stood, flaring up within.

" Stop Adway! Just stop! You know nothing! "

" Ohh come on Devasena. You gotta be kidding me. You know what? The way you are currently behaving, I don't even believe you are the Devasena I knew. You first decide yourself, if I know everything and am not ready to help you, or I know nothing! Decide that first. "

Adway stood resting his body on the car.

Devasena had never felt so helpless.
The night, the kiss and the steep fall of her self respect flashed before her eyes. At any cost she didn't want to lose it all again. What she had gained by leaving.

" Adway, you could have yourself helped me. But you are purposely harassing me. "

" Harassing you?
Listen Devasena. I've got nothing to do with you. Back then as well, Devasena was a part of Bhallaldeva's life only because she was Amarendra Baahubali's love interest. He is the only bridge that connects you and me. And I cannot take it all by myself suddenly. "

Devasena stared at him, astonished.

" How easily you talk of your last life! "

" It's easy Devasena. I've taken it that way..
And trust me. I only wish to help you. And Amarendra too. "

" He doesn't want to help me Adway! He just wants to make me more helpless with each passing moment. As if he enjoys the fact that I remember nothing, as if he enjoys seeing me gasp for breath in a pool of uncertainty."
Devasena could feel her eyes well up.

" Come on Devasena! You have misunderstood him completely! He doesn't at all enjoy you not remember anything! He rather wants you to... "

" I don't know what he wants. I don't know, I don't know nothing Adway!
I don't know what I want as well, or what I'm talking. I only know this much. I'm not going inside. "

" I don't believe this. I always thought, mental crisis connects hearts. And here, two hearts already connected are disconnecting. Are you serious? Do you even know Devasena how much you loved each other? Ask me. I know. I know... "

Devasena saw for the first time Adway drift away.

" Tell me Adway. Tell me what you're thinking. Please Adway, try to get what I'm in. Adway, please! Please!! "

Devasena cupped her face in her palms and began sobbing. Adway came forward and grabbed her shoulders strongly.
" Strong woman, strong! You know what? I have never seen you cry in your toughest days. This face doesn't suit tears.
Come inside Devasena. He needs you as much as you need him. Otherwise, he has his life set in London. He would have been there by now. Back. "
++++

Adway struck the enormous bell beside the mammoth door. He enjoyed doing that.
Devasena stood a distance behind.
Disturbed. Broken a bit.

The door opened with a click. And Devasena saw past Adway's shoulders, the inside was pitch black.

Adway turned to her.
" Come. " , he said. And almost instantly disappeared into the black.

Devasena slowly followed, and the door closed behind her, making her stand in utter darkness.
" Oh my god! Why is it so dark? I can see nothing Adway!
Adway!

Adway! "

And nobody answered back.

Devasena knew her heart was pacing. She stood stiff. This palace had never given her good vibes. And once again, she was drowned in the discomfort she had felt the very first day.

" Amarendra! "
She almost whispered.
And then shouted, " Amarendra!!! "

Suddenly a fire torch lit up at the first landing of the staircase that stood at a corner of the enormous living hall.

" Why are you people testing me? What do you people want? Amarendra! Adway! I know you are around! Don't test me this way! Don't! Don't! "

Another torch lit up at the second landing of the spiral staircase, almost signalling her to come up along the stairs. The light of the torch had partially lit up the living hall. And Devasena felt breathless. There was no one around. And yet she felt, there were unseen souls breathing on her neck.

Once again Devasena turned paper pale. Amarendra, Adway, are they even real? A gust of wind from nowhere blew her hair from the back, scaring her to death, making her shriek.

" I hate you! I hate you Amarendra! "
Devasena began shouting. And only her echo answered her back.

Somewhere, up above the stairs, a huge bell began striking. Devasena kept staring across the stairs. The bell struck twelve times. As if, a royal court was on its proceedings.

Devasena slowly walked towards the staircase. And began climbing the stairs, slowly, looking back time and again. The dark hall below as if was trying to swallow her up.
The entire staircase was lit one after the other by fire torches.

At the end of the staircase was another enormous door. As Devasena came and stood before it, the door opened on its own, scaring her to bits again. Nevertheless, she gathered herself. And walked inside.

The huge court room. Very dimly lit today by a handful of fire torches, that was only enough to make her recognise it to be the hall from where she began this anonymous journey. The hall, that housed her painting.

Devasena slowly began walking down the length of the hall, looking around.
The walls still had pictures, but the dim lights couldn't clear them up for her to recognise.

And suddenly, a baritone echoed throughout the hall,
" Take Mahendra from her lap. His father is dead, but we cannot risk leaving behind saplings. Snatch him from Devasena's lap and kill him as well! Kill him like his father. Kill Mahendra Baahubali like Amarendra Baahubali! '

Without even judging the words, without judging where they came from in that deserted hall, Devasena shouted frantically,
" No! No! Ma, save him. Save my child! Save him!!!! "

Devasena lost consciousness and fell on the cold floor of the hall.

Part 29
Avanthika shook Adway vigorously.
" I had told you. I had told you not to...
I had trusted you Adway Mathur!!! But you did just that! What are you?? "

Adway said nothing, just moved her away from himself, disturbed and irritated.

Avanthika stared at him with a disgusted expression, and then walked over to Amarendra who sat on the sofa, pressing his temple.

" And you? I had thought at least you are sensible? Two days!! Two days and yet she's unconscious!! And you people didn't even care to inform me for the whole of yesterday? What kind of men are you??? "
Avanthika's voice was fluctuating. She couldn't contain her anger at all.

She thumped down on a chair, swaying back and forth.
" Why are you doing these to us? Why don't you just let things be and move on? What's the use of digging up the dead??
Not everyone can be sporting enough as you both! After all, our pasts were not beds of roses! Then why Amarendra? Why Adway? "

Silence. Adway stood resting his body against the staircase, and Amarendra didn't stir nor look at Avanthika.

Devasena hadn't regained consciousness since last morning. The voice over of Adway that echoed through the hall must have had some deleterious effect on her psyche.
Amarendra had examined her, tried his best to bring her back, but her psyche was probably in a shock state. And she almost looked like in a deep sleep, leaving Amarendra and Adway confused to death.

Adway had called Amarendra and texted him a very basic plan of using the bizarre backgrounds of the palace to recreate the past somehow, and Amarendra had reluctantly given in, while Adway drove Devasena to Sreebhoomi. Though they had decided to recreate sort of some other things too as possible, she had reacted immediately and lost it all. Leaving them in an uncertainty as to when she'll regain it.

Avanthika had been frantically searching for her since last evening when she hadn't returned home. And only this morning had she decided to raid Sreebhoomi, because she hated this place. And Adway had not returned home since his arrival.

Avanthika leaned on the sofa. She too had stopped accusing them now.
The time had finally arrived, her mind echoed. Now when she'll get back to her senses, she'll be knowing everything. Avanthika heavily believed that. And she sprang up.

" I hate both of you. I regret bringing you back Adway!! You are a backstabber!! "

" Enough Avanthika! Enough of this shit I'm bearing for so long! Better stay within your limits or I'll... "

" You'll do what? " , Avanthika almost ran towards Adway. " Tell me, you'll do what? "

Adway looked away, pissing.
" And what limits are you talking of? Haven't you just crossed your limits? How would I know what you both might have done with a lone unconscious girl? "

" Avanthika!!!!!! "

The room almost burst with Amarendra's baritone. Adway too was having the most giving up expression as he walked away from her.

" You're overdoing with your words. We're sorry that we forgot to inform you anyway, doesn't really mean you can spill anything you wish from your mouth! "

Avanthika looked away, breathing heavily. Adway sat beside Amarendra, patting him.

"I'm sorry. " , Avanthika uttered after sometime.
" Actually, you both won't understand my situation. "

Adway nodded.
" We do Avanthika. But what I believe is, you should be more sporting about everything. Like not to blame for last life, and not take the blame as well. "

" Maybe I will. But if she doesn't? "

" Let that be upto her, why are you forejudging things? " , Adway shrugged.

Amarendra got up.
" We need to eat something. I am expecting a lot of upheavals in the upcoming hours. I'll get something. "
He went to the kitchen.

" What? Don't gimme those looks. Just don't! "
Despite his warning, Avanthika kept staring at Adway, cold as ice.

+++++

" She's breathing softly. I shook her, she didn't budge. I don't know when she's getting up. "
Amarendra said, serving sandwiches. Avanthika refused to have, and said, " We should pour cold water on her. Or play trumpets. "

" Are you really this kid? Or have you gone mad? " , Adway took a bite of his sandwich.

Amarendra took a seat, but didn't take the food.
" Not me. You're a kid. There a turmoil is building and you are having a feast. "

" Shut up Avanthika, don't be a spoil sport seriously! If Devasena really gets up with a complete memory, nothing can be more soothing than that. "

" Is it? " , Amarendra said, staring at the ceiling.

" Exactly. Not at all. But who can even make you people understand that? ", Avanthika hissed.

Adway looked at either of them and placed back the half eaten sandwich on the plate.

" What's that bandage on your hand? " , Avanthika asked.

Adway looked at Amarendra and then began caressing the bandage. Amarendra smiled, " That's the reason your friend is sleeping peacefully up there. "

Avanthika raised her eyebrows.
" Whatever! " , she took up a cup of coffee.

" By the way, Amarendra! This palace is really mysterious, and scary. I don't really see how you stay here alone. If I were in Devasena's place yesterday, I would have fainted long back. "

Amarendra smiled only.
Avanthika looked at Adway, " Clearly, you lost your royalty. "

Adway almost brushed away her comment by his expressions.

Amarendra again pressed his temple.
" A pressure is building within. I had always wanted her to remember everything, but today when she's on the verge of it maybe, I don't know how to get ready to face it. "

Avanthika placed the coffee cup back.
" What are we actually doing? How do we even know she's regaining her memory? I mean if I'm allowed, I'll sleep for a month! "

" What does she talk? " , Adway looked at Amarendra, clearly irritated with Avanthika.
" Do you think everything is so very normal with us? Well it's a fifty fifty situation. If she remembers, your bad.
If she doesn't, ours. "

+++++

Devasena sprang up on the bed. The entire world around her drastically changed forms, once again. And she felt as if bits of her were dismantling into nothingness. She slowly touched her left hand with her right, then ran fingers across her face and body. Things seemed too vague, too superficial now.

Devasena had imagined nothing of the vividness she actually belonged to. And now her every definition of life was reshaping.

Devasena slowly walked upto the door, that was almost connected to the staircase. She took firm steps forward, and down the stairs.

++++

Amarendra stood up as he saw her walking down the stairs, tall and straight. Adway and Avanthika did too. Avanthika was almost going forward, but Adway held her and nodded a no. They hardly knew what was coming.

Devasena came down and stood at the last step, staring intensely at Amarendra for a long time. Then her eyes rolled to the others in the room.
A smile crossed her face.

" I and my husband stand together in a hall with the one who murdered him, and the one who murdered me. Is this an irony ? Or an end? "

A silence occurred as if none breathed, nor even a heart did beat.

" Neither. It's a beginning. "
Amarendra smiled.
