We have caste system in every place but less so in big cities

If this was not a forum that promotes anonymity another self-evident facet would come to light-the people who are MOST vociferous in claiming that there is NO caste system or that it exists only in rural India, will invariably belong to the so called "higher castes"!

my experience is a lil bit different here.. I have studied in a Missionary School .. there was daughter of sweeper who used to read with us .. there was students from different cast n religion ... we have never seen any discrimination there, in my family also everyone was out of it.. I was in a world where caste discrimination was a word from alien world .. it was after my 12th when I was going to apply for collage one thing made me aware of this... "Reservation" for SC caste .. I could see how ppl less deserving getting the opportunity before me... n the thing was from whom ds reservation is the Needy class is not getting it but some ppl who has the surname of a SC using it.. some of them belong to reach family, some of their father is a officer in Gov office .. 2nd shock I got when one of my friends started trying for gov service .. for every form a general candidate should give 100/- n for sc/st its free ... d way it's going CASTE DISCRIMINATION will take another shape but it wont be removed from our country.. one side their is this Dalit system, one side some political leaders are banking upon it and in another side normal people who belongs to General category who were least bothered by ds caste system, now getting victimised by different kindda discrimination ... any way its a complicated thing

FOR ME I JUST WANT EQUILIBRIUM IN INDIA.. NEITHER OUR RELIGION N NOR OUR CONSTITUTION LET US REMEMBER OUR CASTE AGAIN N AGAIN

i had the same situation as u...till 12th i wasnt much aware of it but it was when i gave my mediacl entrance exam for govt colleges i realised all of it...n even i wud agree with u that all i want is everyone shud be equal...
n in my case it even hurt me more..bec the medical exam i appeared for had 4000 seats but only 1800 for general category...n my rank was somewhere 3000...had all this reservation thing nt been there i wud have been through...moreover..my friends was rank 6000 but she got it in sc st quota list/ranking...n to say she was underpriveledged wud be a joke...she was extremely rich and had all the latest gadgets n stuff even before we wud know about it..n when u see all this..it really irks u
i have no issues if the govt wants to support the underpriveledged...but they shud be opening special institutions where they wud be given free coaching to make them capable enough for the entrance exam rather than just giving them seats on platter
n on this issue many ppl say that we werent capable enough n didnt get throughi admitwasnt capable enough to get among the first 1800..but surely if u considerrank wise i was much more capable than the girl who got rank 6000..but still she got a seat n i didnt...i its someones enitre carrier which gets effected bec of all this..but our politicians are only bothered about their vote banks
so frm that day i had lost my sensitivity towards this issue

I came to know these things when I was 13-14 years old. I have seen people treat servants differently but had not given it much thought. Like when I was 8 or 9, a friend lived in the flat below and they had a boy working for them, who was 13-14. And whenever we used to play in house, I saw that the boy was either standing or sitting on the floor, while we were sitting on sofa or bed. One day, i just asked him to sit on the sofa, but my friend said that "Nahi mummy ne kaha hai use niche hi baithna hai". I felt very bad and angry over the discrimination.

I saw full blown effect when I was 13. My sister was in love with one her friends from her college. She told me first about him, now I understand it was because she was afraid my parents wouldn't accept that. I was very open as a child, and when she told me about him, I was happy. I also met him once or twice and seemed like a good fellow. Good education and all. Then she told me that the problem is that he is a "higher" caste than us. I asked her what does that mean, and she told me all about it. She one day told this to my parents and they were furious. And all that because of a fu**ing caste? They weren't even ready to meet the person. Straight rejection, no questions asked. She has a good job now in a reputable company, and he also is trying to start his own, but still my parents are looking for grooms on "community" matrimonial sites. Caste doesn't make or break a person FFS.

I was an atheist even before this experience, since the age of 11. These things just increased my hate towards religion. Seeing people treat sweepers as low people. Judging people on criteria which wasn't even under their control. I condemn religion and deny the existence of god, they just create differences and cause much more problems than they solve, if any (I don't think they solve any). I don't identify myself as a Hindu anymore, let alone caste. Surname is a problem, because as you know people try to extrapolate from it and I am thinking of having my name changed. I am a human and I see and treat others as a human.

My parents didi mention this early on at about 14 years old, but was confused, and later my profession was different to my Dads, so fater reading scriptures realised there is no caste system as per social construct, as Lord Krishan resides in hearts of all beings, and that it is Varna, which is by choice.
every function in society has to have a name, but there is dignity of labour for all functions, otherwise society cannot function for the betterment of humanity.
Regardless of pay packets we accept all human beings as spirtitually equal, otherwise cannot attain Moksha-primal endpoint of Hinduism or real name Sanatan Dharma.
MY CASTE: HUMAN, fucntion something else gained through training and education.
In our office there are high managers, middles level and cleaners, without cleaners office will be a mess, scriptures inform us of dignity of labour to accept all, otherwise how can society workk for the better, let us vanquish social evil of caste, which against message of Sanatan Dharma and therfore humanity!

Sadly, most people don't subscribe to this type of thinking. I am always having the logic wars with family and friends. I have never just given into cultural ways, I have always questioned everything. And since most people don't like logic, they don't like me. 😆 Rational arguments don't usually work on religious people. Otherwise there would be no religious people.

BTW one clarification, by "signature message" do you mean the text in my signature or the gist of my post?

As far as I have investigated and observed, religion is a human construct.
Nothing divine about it.
Sadly, organized religion, while having the power to do great good (and has done so - free meals/education to poor, fund-raising for the needy, etc.) also has done great harm.
In fact, the latter far outweighs the former - For an individual would still help another whether religion existed or not, but a collective transforms a coward into a bully.

The text in your signature :)

I'm a bit like that too - discussions on logical points, questioning everything and all.

Rational arguments would never work with religious people because the first perquisite of every religion is the "giant leap of faith" and the "blind assumption" that God exists. I'm an agnostic myself - not an atheist, but an agnostic - mind you.

Well, I started to write something clever but ended up writing something that reads like a nutrition label. 😆

Yeah, I am very much against that blind faith. Instead of just believing what other say, people should think for themselves. Then they should decide, what they think is right.

Yeah, being on the fence is better per se, because atheism is also the other extreme, claiming for 100% that God doesn't exist. The real thing is that nobody can know. Actually, I am an agnostic atheist. I don't say that there is a 0% chance that God exists, but the evidence makes me believe that he does not.

Well I wouldn't say sitting on the fence - but more like leaning more towards free choice. My personal philosophy is one of mutual non-interference "You don't mess with me and I won't tell you where you went wrong in running the world or what a shoddy job you've done in the last few years"; so we both mind our own individual business.

Hey just started reading this excellent book called "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins. It was recommended by some members of this forum. You might want to read it, excellent logical presentation of facts there. The entire premise is that in all the centuries of religion, belief in God has caused more harm to the society than benefits.
