Don't even get me started about this "progressive" label that these shows are happy to assume...it's amazing that people actually swallow it! Every show begins by promoting itself as progressive (Zee tv is no different with their recent offering Punar Vivaah) but they soon (within weeks) settle into their familiar regressive routine of daughter-in-law abuse...

You only have to tune into TV every night to get a sense that the domestic space is THE most dangerous space for women in India!

Oh I've stopped watching most serials these days. The only ones I follow are Paravrrish - at least it's reasonably realistic and Kya Hua - which I'm close to giving up every 3rd day when they start the trash about the lead crying or fighting to get that waxwork back in her life.

I used to love the shows of Hats Off productions, since they had such positive messaging - esp. Baa, Bahu and BAby and the other one Ek Packet Umeed, but off late even they have gone the way of the rest

@Annika,

And the way you put and word every thought of mine so beautifully continues, standing ovation to you or this post.

The impact of social media and cinema is huge, the way they r glorifying the male ego and sterotyping a female as a bimbette who is
just happy with those shirtless pent up aggression of the hero , is actually harming not only the male pschyic but the girls after watchining their cine idols , dream about that brute force and get a thrll from it and wrongfully take it as a form of luv.

@Chitrashi, thank you for naming the serials , it pricks me how the female lead is basically a doormat for the fancies of her socalled lover and his amily.
Doordarshan was iconic it gave us gems like shanti , hum log etc, those glorious days.

This should have been hightlighted in the show,

Make movies but issue appropriate warnings, become passionate and active brand ambassadors, if an AB campaign can eradicate polio from this country , then the Three Khans supporting a campaign can result in sum change.

I hear you.

The only show I watch nowadays is Devon ke Dev Mahadev.

At least I know I won't be subject to saas-bahu melodrama in a mythological...😆 At least I hope not!

My fav shows used to be Rishta.com and Mahi way and Khotey sikkey... but those types of shows never last more that a season...😕

@ Annika

Excellent points you have raised. My own take on the damage committed by movies is in the rise of eve-teasing. The entire culture seems to have spawned out of Shammi Kapoor, Joy Mukherji and ilk.

I don't know how many of you saw "Paying Guest" starring Dev Anand and Nutan. In that movie he follows her home singing a romantic song and is promptly thrashed by her father.

Cut to Shammi Kapoor teasing his heroines, and silly lines like "Ladki ki naa mein bhi haan hoti hai" and some similarly silly movies for almost a generation and the trend was set with every boy who achieves puberty convinced that he has the birthright to harass women on road, and its ok to lech and pass lewd remarks.

I keep telling my mom that her generation of girls did the most damage to the female society be going bonkers over these heroes. They are not heroes but villains in my dictionary.

You know Aamir never names any of the perpetrators of violence/abuse, and I quite agree with that policy.

But I wonder if we couldn't name the serials which glorify abuse against women...verbal, emotional, psychological, physical...??

Would that be too much?

Wouldn't t be easier to name the serials that do not glorify DV? The list would be shorter.

Can you guys risk a flop but stick to principles? How will people's psyche change if mass media itself peddles worst kind of stereotypes?

Agree with all your points...except...the one in bold... just because actresses dance to songs like Sheila/Munni.. doesn't mean guys can tease them... guys need to have the sense to understand that what the actress is portraying on tv.. is just a character and at end of the day an actress is like any other girl. The problem ultimately comes down to the fact that woman are more or less treated as objects (e.g. get married by certain age..or else😆.) in our society.Ok, now back to silent mode.😊
