One can't help but wonder whether the state governments were unaware about female foeticide before Satyamev Jayate's first episode. Suddenly all the state governments seem to have found the measures that should have been taken years ago to combat female foeticide. The latest state to jump on the bandwagon is Haryana. Health authorities in Haryana will install silent observer chips in all ultrasound machines to monitor the ultrasound processes being done by doctors at private clinics, officials of the state health department said. A health department spokesman said here that the proposal has been prepared "to install silent observer chips in all ultrasound machines to assess the total number of ultrasound cases examined per day". The health department has already made it mandatory for all women to submit identification proof at the ultrasound centre before undergoing the ultrasound test.
A lady doctor was arrested in Yamunanagar town, 80 km from here, this week following a tip-off that she had aborted the female foetus of a pregnant woman. Her ultrasound centre and clinic was also sealed by the health department. The health department has also cancelled the registration of three ultrasound centres in Kurukshetra district for violating various provisions of the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique (PNDT) Act, the spokesman said. These three centres were registered three years ago under the legislation but had failed to install ultrasound machines. Haryana has one of the worst sex ratios among India's states. It has only 877 females per 1,000 males.
Earlier the Haryana government announced that pregnant women will have to submit a photocopy of their identification proof at ultrasound centres as a pre-condition for undergoing the test. Aamir Khan also met Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot to discuss the female foeticide situation in the state and convinced him that infanticide cases should be fast-tracked in special court. In MP, 65 MTP (medical termination of pregnancy) licenses were suspended because they hadn't submitted the necessary documents. The second episode dealt with child sex abuse and has finally brought the uncomfortable issue out from under the rug.
'Satyamev Jayate' played major role in Child Sex Abuse Bill: Harish Iyer
Mumbai: Aamir Khan's 'Satyamev Jayate' has indeed been instrumental in raising awareness among people about the glitches in the Indian society and has subsequently led many duty bound officials taking stringent actions to deal with social malice.
Whether or not 'Satyamev Jayate' triggered the passing of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Bill by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday is highly debatable. But it does come as a relief to the thousands of victims of child sex abuse.
One such victim is Harish Iyer, who had made an appearance on the show and spoken about his traumatic childhood in front of live audience.
Iyer took to Twitter to express his excitement. He wrote, "#CHILDSEXUALABUSE bill passed in loksabha. cant contain my emotions(sic)."
Acknowledging the effort of everyone who has been responsible for raising an alarm for the Bill, Iyer wrote, "#CSAbill It is the collective effort of everybody, all media, society, you and me. While @smjindia does play a major role(sic)."
"#CSAbill has been passed and will be a law soon(sic)," he added.
Iyer also shared his take on the Bill with Sanjay Suri and Onir, who had made a film based on his life and wrote, "@sanjaysuri @iamonir THE #CSAbill has been passed. this doesnt mean NO MORE ABHIMANYU's it def means that abusers would be dealt with(sic)."
"#CSAbill punishes the offender and the just implementation will ensure that the victim is not further victimized(sic)," he tweeted.
However, he does believe that it is up to the people to fight for their rights. He wrote, "I know many bills have been passed. And many laws have been unimplimented. Its upon us now to ensure that the law is implemented. #CSAbill(sic)."
Going for sonography? Big Brother gets the report first - Jaipur
Jaipur: The government finally did it. Moved by actor Aamir Khan's proactive role and Rajasthan high court's demand for administrative action to curb female foeticide, the Jaipur district administration has decided to bell the cat.
In Jaipur all the centres with ultrasound machines will have to install active tracking device on their machines within the next 45 days. The move will allow the government to keep a track of the sonography tests carried out on pregnant women at these centres.
In addition, the administration will now keep a door-to-door check on pregnant women in the district with the help of Aanganbadi workers, NGOs and health service employees. "In the first phase around 100 sonography centres will be equipped with active tracking devices, others will follow suit," Naveen Mahajan, Jaipur district collector told reporters on Wednesday.
To keep a track on the pregnant women the administration has directed all centres to have the form F, a document mandatory for patients to fill in, uploaded online. "This will enable the administration to track down every expecting mother coming for a test; also there would be no room for manual errors," Mahajan said.
The details on form F will allow the government to monitor the patients through a GPRS system. It will help prepare a complete data base of all the foetal sonographies done in the district. On the basis of this database, the administration will conduct a door-to-door survey to know the exact status and help save the girl child.
"Once the data base is complete we will undertake door-to-door survey which will help us ensure that no one goes for termination of pregnancy even outside the state," said Mahajan. The association of radiologists has welcomed the district administration's move."We have been demanding such a system for transparency. One cannot blame the profession due to some unwanted elements," said RC Yadav, president of the Association.
[Good move!👏]
'Satyameva Jayate' inspires sarpanch in Rajasthan to act against female feticide
Aamir Khan's highly acclaimed Satyameva Jayate has inspired a sarpanch in a Rajasthan village to register police cases against women and families who go for tests to detect and abort the girl child.
"Illegal sex determination is rampant in the Shekhawati region (Jhunjhunu, Churu and Sikar districts)," sarpanch Randheer Singh of Budania village told IANS.
The village, some 200 km from here, is home to some 5,000 people.
Randheer Singh said a six-member committee had been formed to keep a tab on pregnant women.
"After watching Aamir Khan's TV show Satyameva Jayate on female feticide, I felt that awareness in Rajasthan is not enough," he said.
"Checking female feticide at the village level is necessary to save girl children."
He said that auxiliary nurses and midwives know about almost every pregnant woman in villages.
"If a woman is found involved in illegal sex determination and abortion of a girl child, an FIR (First Information Report) will be filed against her with the police," Singh said.
"If she is forced to abort by her in-laws, similar action will be taken against them also," he said.
According to the 2011 census, Rajasthan has 883 girls in the 0-6 age group for every 1,000 boys. The child sex ratio in 2001 was 909.
The Rajasthan government has taken several measures to end illegal sex determination tests. It has hiked the amount of money given to people who complain about errant ultrasound clinics.
Aamir Khan, in his programme telecast May 6 that drew record audiences countrywide, highlighted a sting operation done seven years ago by two journalists to expose growing female feticide in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
[Kudos to this Sarpanch for taking right steps! And of course, congratulations to Aamir/STAR/DD for this initiative! 👏It's a slap on face of detractors, cynics and gossip-mongers and especially that minister who said Aamir was only doing it for money! 🤢]
Satyamev Jayate Impact: Five Rajasthan doctors booked by anti corruption bureau
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) booked five senior Rajasthan government doctors for granting recognition to the nursing colleges which did not have standard facilities for the students, officials said. The doctors are professors at the medical colleges in the state and had inspected these nursing colleges as designated members of the Rajasthan Nursing Council for granting them recognition, they added. The authorities of five nursing colleges were also booked under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
According to ACB's Inspector General Umesh Mishra, the agency had raided about 75 colleges in March on complaints of irregularities. "It was found that many of these nursing colleges were granted recognition from the Rajasthan Nursing Council despite the fact that they did not have proper facilities," said Mishra. The officer added that each-inspection team consists of two designated members of the Rajasthan Nursing Council including a professor at a government medical college and a teacher of a government nursing institution. "First information reports have been registered against senior doctors including Jhalawar Medical College's professor Sushil Kochar, SMS Medical College's associate professors R.K. Gupta and Rambabu Sharma, JK Lon Hospital's professors Dr L.D. Agrawal and Rambabu Gupta," said Mishra. Authorities of four nursing colleges in Jaipur and one in Jodhpur have also been booked, said the officer.
In the fourth episode of Satyamev Jayate, Aamir Khan highlighted issues dealing with medical malpractice.
