~ CHAPTER SEVEN ~
"Hey Sid," waved Cabir casually, "Morning. Coffee?"
Roli still hadn't dared to turn around. She wrung her pink flowered handkerchief nervously as she listened to Siddhant's slow, dragging steps close in. Out of the corner of her eyes, she could see Dhruv taking extra care to keep a low profile. He looked pretty disturbed. It was as if he wanted to hide from someone. Wonder who?
"Yeah buddy," sighed Siddhant, "really need one today. Didn't get much sleep last night."
"Yup," replied Cabir in a pepped up tone, "you do look like shit today."
"Tell me about it," said Siddhant as he walked past Roli and paused right in front of her. "Hey Roli, how are you today?"
BLUNK!!! That was how Roli felt. As if a large block of iron had just dropped out of the sky and straight onto her head! The heavenly fragrance of his cologne lingered in the air and she was completely lost.
"It's your blazer Siddhant," said Cabir who had been watching Roli's cheeks and ears turn scarlet red.
"Blazer?" Siddhant was confused. "What about it?"
"It's so yellow today," replied Cabir, "just like Roli's tunic. Matching colours. Blazing bright. Same pinch Roli." Cabir pinched the air and pursed his lips gleefully.
Siddhant smiled as Cabir rocked happily on his chair, excited about his first witty comment of the day.
"Actually dude," continued Cabir, "I have a brilliant solution. Just go and take off your blazer. It's too bright you see? You just blew the poor girl's brains off. She's literally blind now. See? Her eyes are all fused out. Probably your black shirt should balance out the light and shade and bring her back to normal. The works..."
"Shut up Cabir," snapped Siddhant with an amused smirk and headed right into his cabin.
Roli's eyes were like gooseberries. All round and watery. Oh Lord! They're going to embarrass me more!!
"Hey just relax," Cabir winked at Roli, "just giving some sunshine before the storm begins."
Roli nodded quietly and smiled awkwardly. Right now, she just wanted to bang her head on the table.
"I'll be right back," announced Siddhant as he stepped out of his cabin.
Dhruv, who was still keeping low, sighed in relief. Phew!!!
"And Dhruv..."
Dhruv almost jumped on hearing his name coming from Siddhant's mouth.
"And the storm begins," muttered Cabir through pursed lips.
"Are you done with the payroll information copies?" asked Siddhant with a really grim expression.
"A-almost d-done, Siddhant," he stammered nervously.
"Bro," snapped Siddhant irritably, "it's been two days. What were you doing all these days? Laying eggs?"
"N-no S-Siddhant," Dhruv was visibly shuddering now, "it's just that..."
"You better clear it out in an hour's time," interrupted Siddhant sternly, "or trust me buddy. Your salaries aren't getting through."
"Oh gosh, don't say that," moaned Cabir faintly with a hand placed tenderly over his aching heart, "I need to pay my bills. I need to eat. I need to fill up my car's tank."
"Keep dreaming," Siddhant retorted and stormed away.
Roli was stunned. Did Siddhant just get really rude with Dhruv right now? Bossy? Pushy? She could see that Dhruv looked worked up, his shoulders slumped wearily. No wonder the poor fellow was keeping low in Siddhant's presence. He probably gets pushed around a lot!
"Dhruv is Siddhant's favourite target," said Cabir having noticed the questions written all over Roli's face.
"T-target?" stammered Roli anxiously.
"Sweetheart. He isn't as flowery as he looks," stated Cabir in a low voice, "he is what I would call an asshole of the first order."
Roli was really worried now. The good guy image of Siddhant she had been adoring all this while seemed to have started to fade away. "Does he shout at you too?" she asked quietly.
"Well," answered Cabir, "you see, we're sort of at the same level. He's the HR Officer and I'm the Public Relations Officer. I collaborate with him. I don't report to him."
"You mean to tell me that he..."
"...Bullies his subordinates," Cabir completed Roli's question with a full stop. "Yep, that's why he's an asshole. A very big one."
Roli's head was buzzing now. She had this sudden urge to run away from there. Where the hell have I landed Matarani? This guy will surely torture me now!
Just then, the door opens and a nervous young lady in her early twenties tiptoed in. She looked around suspiciously through gritted teeth.
"Dhruv! Cabir!" she whispered hoarsely, "where's Siddhant? Is he in?"
"You can come in Mukti," replied Cabir in an audible voice, "you're safe for now."
Mukti hurried to her table before she could get caught.
"So what's it this time Mukti?" asked Cabir in amusement. "Break down? No bus? Auto?"
"Traffic jam," she answered as she switched on her PC.
"Yeah right," smiled Cabir, "every day, right?"
"Dude, it's the truth," she snapped in frustration, "believe me if you want to."
"Oh, I believe you," shrugged Cabir, "you just need to deal with Siddhant."
"God, don't remind me," she growled irritably and started to download her e-mails. As she did, she noticed Dhruv's flushed face. "What happened to you?" she asked in concern.
Dhruv didn't look at her. He just nodded nothing sadly.
"That idiot picked on you again?" she asked angrily. "Early in the morning?"
"It's nothing new," sighed Dhruv drearily with his eyes glued to the computer screen.
Mukti placed a consoling hand on his shoulder and gripped it gently. "Seriously Dhruv," she muttered through clenched teeth, "one day... one day I'm going to lose it and punch this guy so hard! SO HARD in the nuts that he would be seeing all stars and planets."
Cabir snorted and bellowed in laughter.
"I'm serious!" stated Mukti.
"No, I was just playing the scene in my head," laughed Cabir, "it's so hilarious!"
Mukti quickly snapped her hand off Dhruv's shoulder as she noticed Siddhant returning with a cup of coffee. Cabir managed to control his laughter almost instantly.
"Roli," he said as he bustled to his cabin, "just come in."
Roli, who had been gathering together all the terrifying descriptions of Siddhant in her head all this while, nearly jumped at her name being called.
"Chalo," said Cabir quietly, "he's calling you. All the best."
Roli was horrified. If he starts yelling at me like he did with Dhruv, I'm sure that I'll start bawling like a baby. Oh God. Save me!
Roli shuffled nervously into Siddhant's cabin. He was at his computer already, downloading e-mails and going through other documents.
"Buddy, see that file on that cabinet?" said Siddhant as he looked up at her momentarily, "just pass it here."
"Okay," her voice was barely audible as she picked up the file with trembling hands and passed it across the...
~THWACK~
... The piping cup of coffee is instantly knocked over and the contents rush like a steaming tsunami all over the table, documents and straight onto Siddhant's lap!

~ CHAPTER EIGHT ~
Cabir, Dhruv and Mukti exchanged surprised glances amongst themselves as an "Ahhooowwwfffshittt!" followed by a painful hiss spat out from Siddhant's cabin.
"What was that?" mumbled Mukti with her eyebrows raised questioningly.
As realization dawned upon Cabir, his incredulous squint instantly dissolved into a bright exhilarated smile. He shot up from his chair and darted right into Siddhant's cabin to find him doubled over in anguish.
A petrified Roli stood rooted to her spot with a trembling hand clapped over her open mouth. Her eyes were as round as guavas.
Siddhant was heaving deeply and trembling all over as he fumbled like a maniac with the soaked and stained documents. The veins on his neck throbbed madly and threatened to pop itself.
"Dude, you okay?" asked Cabir with concern and eyed the wet patch on Siddhant's pants. "I thought I heard sausages sizzling on a hot griddle," he added sarcastically with a wince. Siddhant looked mad enough to blow up the entire building. His face was a deep shade of crimson, his eyes were blood shot and his nostrils flared wildly.
"These were important," said Siddhant in a deeply strained and breathless voice as he picked up the soggy documents.
"I-I'm s-so-sorry," Roli finally found her voice but had a tough time keeping it stable. "I di-didn't mean to... It just..."
Cabir watched the both of them carefully. Roli was in a pathetic state. It looked like she would break down crying any moment. Siddhant on the other hand was boiling mad. So mad that his eyes rolled in its sockets.
"Those were cheques," growled Siddhant in a low voice as he fixed his angry glare on Roli, "salary cheques. Five hundred of them. All ready to go today. What do you want me to tell them?"
"I'm sorry," whispered Roli in a trembling voice. "It was an accident. I don't know how it happ..."
But Siddhant cut her off. "You want me to tell them that? That I'm sorry?"
"N-no... I..." Roli was visibly shuddering now.
"No?" asked Siddhant with a lopsided smile, "Then what do you want me to tell them? That some clumsy, dim-witted dumbass spilt coffee over the cheques?"
The clumsy, dim-witted dumbass comment hit her hard. Tears started to spill over. She was totally lost now and felt miserable and guilty as heck.
"These cheques were for the workers on the site," breathed Siddhant as he flashed the soggy cheques before her eyes, "do you know what's going to happen if they don't get paid on time?"
Cabir's mind was working up a storm. Better do something fast. Or there's going to be a nasty scene right now. When Siddhant loses it, he simply loses it.
"Do you or don't you?" repeated Siddhant firmly but Roli was completely petrified. "I suppose you don't," he continued, "so I'll tell you what's going to happen. They're going to march up to our office and ram down the doors."
Cabir nodded his head. You can't be serious, he thought to himself, ram down the doors? Seriously? Do you really think that the others are as crazy as you are?
"And what do you want me to tell the Accounts guys?" he prodded again. "The Payroll department, the Finance department?"
"Guys-guys-guys just chill-chill-chill," interrupted Cabir, "let's not get too worked up. We'll sort this out. Okay? Trust me. And Siddhant, you'd better head to the washroom and get yourself dried up. Good thing that your pants are black today."
Cabir managed to push Siddhant out of the cabin.
Mukti and Dhruv squinted at Siddhant as he stormed out of the department. She passed a confused look to Dhruv to which he answered with a "no idea" shrug.
Meanwhile, in the cabin, Roli struggled to get a grip on herself.
"Don't worry," consoled Cabir, "it's not as bad as it sounds. This guy is pretty talented when it comes to blowing up a big balloon out of nothing. So don't worry. It's something that can be sorted out."
"I-I shouldn't ha-have come back," she stammered through her tears, "I made a mistake."
"See look Roli," said Cabir, "he hired you for the job because he believes in your skills. And mostly, the job of an HR goes to those who can be trusted. So..."
But Roli interrupted him. "I don't think that he'd trust me anymore, I'm such a klutz."
By now, Mukti and Dhruv were at the cabin's door. "Guys, what's wrong?" asked Mukti curiously as she eyed Roli bury her face in her hands. "Is she crying? What the hell happened?"
"Long story," said Cabir, "but hey, just stick out your tongue for a moment."
"Huh?" Mukti was surprised. "My tongue? For what?"
"Just stick it out," he ordered.
"But why?" asked Mukti, her eyebrows raised questioningly.
"Just do it," he said sternly.
"Fine! Whatever!" Mukti stuck out her tongue whilst Cabir took a closer look. "What is it?" she asked curiously as she pulled her tongue back in.
"Was just curious you know," answered Cabir, "I think that you've got an evil tongue."
"Wha-? What do you mean?"
"Remember? Some time back you were fantasizing about punching Siddhant in the nuts?" Cabir had a lopsided smile on his face.
"What about that?" she asked.
"We-ell," drawled Cabir, "it sort of came true."
"What?!!?" Mukti was astonished. "Seriously?"
"Much worse," said Cabir, "Roli just scalded his nuts. And everything else in between."
"Hahaha! Oww-my-gawwwd!" Mukti chortled loudly.
Dhruv looked so happy. Vengeance is sweet.
"I need to go," mumbled Roli as she quickly flicked off her tears and shouldered her way out gently.
"Go? Go where?" Cabir tried to stop her.
"Coming here was a big mistake," she sniffled as she managed to get through them, "this is not for me. I'm such an idiot."
"No yaar," Mukti tried to stop her. "See listen, we can sort this out, okay?"
But Roli was already at the door with her hand on the handle.
"Roli!" Cabir called out in an attempt to change her mind, "just listen."
But before she could open the door...
... It SWUNG open with tremendous force and WHAMMED right onto her face!!!

~ CHAPTER NINE ~
The impact BLASTED Roli off her feet and sent her hurtling across the floor.
"Oh shit!" gasped the HR gang who had been watching her all this while. In an instant, they were beside her, gently helping her up.
"You okay?" asked Dhruv.
Roli's face was twisted into a painful grimace as she shielded her forehead with a cupped hand. She took deep breaths as she struggled to contain the pain.
"Just show me," said Mukti as she gently tried to take Roli's hand off her forehead, "let me see that. Come on."
Cabir had an angry scowl on his face. From the corner of his eyes, he could see the offender standing close by and watching the scene. Cabir so badly wanted to punch the daylights out of this guy that his hands curled into a tight fist. "Goddammit!" he lashed out through gritted teeth, "what the hell were you thinking? Do you see things with your butt? You god damn loser..." His words trailed to a stop as he noticed who the offender was - Siddhant.
"Siddhant?!!?" Cabir was dumbfounded.
Dhruv and Mukti looked up at a rigid Siddhant. He was pale as a ghost and frozen stiff with his lips slightly parted and his eyes a bit wider than usual. His gaze darted from Roli to his team mates.
"Siddhant," started Cabir in an annoyed tone, "what's wrong with you? Is this how you open the door?"
Siddhant's guilty expression was instantly covered up by a defensive one. "How am I supposed to know that she was there?"
"What?!!?" Cabir was stunned and even more annoyed.
Dhruv pursed his lips together in annoyance whilst Mukti nodded her head in disbelief.
"You've got to be kidding me," spat Cabir.
"Moreover, what was she doing at the door?" argued Siddhant.
"Siddhant, what do people normally do at the door? Tap dance?" Compared to Mukti and Dhruv, Cabir stood firm before Siddhant without fearing to voice his thoughts in a bold tone. "Or maybe grilling chicken? Dude. This is an office. Anyone could be at the door anytime. You need to be a bit more careful."
"Exactly what I'm saying," Siddhant was growing more defensive, "she needs to be more careful. This is an office. Anyone could be at the door. Anytime."
"Unbelievable," mumbled Cabir in disbelief.
"She's bleeding," Mukti announced as she managed to get Roli's hand off her forehead.
All eyes, including Siddhant's, were on Roli's cut forehead now. His defensive stance began to dissolve beyond his control into a guilty one. He took darting glances at Roli as he shifted uncomfortably on his feet.
Shit, thought Siddhant frantically as he stuffed his hands into his pockets and looked away whilst returning fleeting glances at her, God, that cut looks pretty gruesome but I hope that it's not as bad as it looks. Please let her be okay. I can probably make up for it when the time is right.
The very thought and sight of the wound on her head was killing him with guilt. He was definitely very sorry, but he just couldn't admit it. How could he when he had always managed to look so perfect and do everything right in front of his team? This was probably the first time in his tenure that his flawless, perfect image was shattered to pieces by a clumsy girl. He had never felt and looked so awkward in all his career.
"Mukti, I'll go get the first aid," said Dhruv as he jumped to his feet, "you help her into the conference room."
"See if you can find some ice too," she replied as she gently helped Roli onto her feet, "easy. You're going to be okay. Come along."
Cabir waited for the girls to disappear into the conference room before turning to Siddhant. "This is not right bro," he said, "so not right. At least you need to apologize."
Siddhant, who was about to return to his cabin stopped in his tracks. "Wow," he muttered, "now this is interesting. I just got cooked a while ago. Don't you want to find out how I'm doing? Or at least ask me to see the doc?"
His words silenced Cabir for a moment before he spoke up again. "I'll get you some ice."
Siddhant nodded his head with a sarcastic "wow" before heading back to his cabin.
Cabir stood there with his hands anchored to his hips while he watched Mukti and Dhruv tend to Roli's wounds. "Are you okay?" asked Cabir with concern, "do you need to see a doctor?"
"I'm fine," said Roli quietly. She was still stinging in pain. "But I guess I've had enough," she continued bitterly, "I can't do this any longer."
Just then, Siddhant stomped into the conference room out of nowhere. "I need you in my cabin right now," he rattled, "now!"
The HR gang had a now what? Look all over their faces as Siddhant stormed back to his cabin.
"Let me handle this," said Cabir as he waved an assuring hand, "you don't have to go."
"Don't bother," replied Roli as she rose to her feet, "I wanted to meet him anyways, to put in my resignation."
The team was immensely quiet after she uttered the word "resignation."
"Are you okay?" asked Mukti in concern.
"Yes," Roli managed to cook up a wide toothy grin. But it was pretty obvious that she wasn't. "Thank you so much guys. You guys were really awesome."
"We're sorry about what happened," said Cabir in a low voice.
"Come on, why are you apologizing? The mistake was mine. I'm the klutz. I just goofed up big time. So be cool. You guys were really very supportive and I really wished that I could work with you guys but I've done enough damage already." Roli strapped her purse over her shoulder before moving out towards Siddhant's cabin.
