![]() | Rohit Roy I was always confident that I would find my space. My portrayal of Rishabh Malhotra in Swabhimaan (1995) was lapped up by the audience and there was no looking back after that. It was accidental, actually. I was in my then girlfriend (now wife) Manasi Joshi's house when she got a call from Mahesh Bhatt's unit for a serial. Manasi refused because she was modelling those days and was not interested in television. When she told me that they were making an afternoon daily, I was intrigued. Dailes were not heard of those days, and an afternoon daily was an even more alien concept. I called them up and asked if I could audition. But I was rejected by the entire team of directors and writer Shobha De. They found me too MTVish and funky. I'd wear earrings and flashy clothes which they thought did not go well with the character of a young, angry, industrialist's son. | ||||
It so happened that Mahesh Bhatt was going through the tapes of all those who auditioned and he chanced upon my tape. The unit told him I had been rejected, but he called me back. This happened four-five weeks later; I had given up hope by then. For the second audition, they made me enact an emotional scene wherein my father's dead body was flown in from the US and I was supposed to deliver a soliloquy. I was dressed in a red jacket. I had no clue why I was called, so I went in the clothes I usually wore. After that, Bhattsaab announced, 'This is my Rishabh Malhotra.' And that was it. I was supposed to get an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) degree and have a job in the US. But here I am, acting in Mumbai! I believe you chart your own destiny. If things are not happening the way you want them to, it's probably because something better is in store for you. |
