Saraswathichandra - the epic love saga once captivated our hearts by its charm and magic spell now shows signs of bleak prospects offering little hope, encouragement and excitement. It is no longer the classic tale of love of two soulmates and we are no more the same ardent faithful followers, but only habitual viewers of the show. A reality check in the proper perspective is needed from both sides, writers on fans' expectations, hopes, trust and fans on their own favouritism, bias, loyalty, priorities. Show originated from a classic novel with a solid story as backup. The classic approach, excellent ensemble cast, wonderful aesthetics and technical finesse, good creative team, epic romance made it absolutely one of its kind and immensely popular. The poignant love story, enchanting leads, ethereal music, sophistication, beauty and purity associated with the show raised the standards manifold, leaving us riveted to the show. All characters were well etched and due to the seamless plot in the story the flow was marked by an orderly, logical, aesthetically consistent relation of characters, events and sequences. The iconic leading characters saras and kumud 's scintillating portrayal and display of their chemistry, passionate romance, eternal bonding and soul-stirring emotions are still vivid in our memories. The utter deviation from the original script and the complete reverse of the approach and characters has now resulted in an embarrassing debacle. Going by the current scheme of things the show is not a patch on its glorious legacy. Our best-loved show and characters have come a long way, compromised and distorted to the maximum magnitude. They are now at the disposal of our incompetent, amateurish writers who deliver inept, substandard, cliched plots. Because of their conventional modus operandi and the 'no-story only tracks&episodes' perspective the narrative goes along the tried, tested and beaten path devoid of any creativity and originality. There are hackneyed plot and ideas, lack of creative imagination, illogical tracks, character butchery, fabricated drama galore which are glaring major drawbacks to the show. The current crop of writers have a strong penchant for investigative suspense drama but lack the required prowess or skills to accomplish it and hence the entire series of such tracks turned out to be too contrived and farcical. The loyal fans are deprived of key privileges which are also the core aspects of the show (intense love saga, epic romance, impeccable jodi of saras and kumud). The vital concept of the show has been sidelined making way for new, parallel and mindless characters and tracks. Show is at its creative low due to unprofessional writers and mediocre technical crew (under par camera work, editing, art etc ) and also low production values. The magnificent haveli set was a masterpiece which was a symbol of beauty and artistic taste and was very vibrant and an integral part of samud love story. Now both the indoor and outdoor locations (eg:school) look flat, insipid and dismal. The two main problems with our show is lack of consistency and characters' butchery. The inconsistent nature of every issue, event and the flaws and shortcomings in the characterization must be attributed to shoddy and lazy writing. The current set of writers are not well versed with the personality traits of prime characters and they often misrepresent their inherent qualities and characteristics on the basis of the fabricated circumstances and unreasonable purposes. They manipulate the characters to suit their convenience and bizarre situations and to create conflicts of interests between them. Hence the characters lose consistency and originality and become totally unrelatable. Even the iconic saraswathichandra and kumudsundari are not spared. Saraswathichandra, the most inspirational character from original is a man of virtue, integrity and strong ideologies. He is also a social reformer having high social conscience and moral standards. As a true family man he offers unconditional love and true companionship to kumud and fulfils his responsibilities towards the family. His character exudes selflessness, warmth, compassion, goodwill and humanity. Hats off to this wonderful iconic character and to the actor who plays it to perfection. But he too becomes a victim of false circumstances and inapt treatment (unrestrained behaviour, strange disguises etc) and conveniently forgets the noble and ultimate aspiration of his life (writers mercy). Kumudsundari, a level-headed woman, a natural fearless leader with strong will and high self esteem is often portrayed as obstinate, pompous, insensible woman due to lousy writing and poor depiction of character by creatives to meet the needs of a certain absurd context and conditions. In their standpoint kumud remains a mystery that can't be fathomed. Similarly all characters have been victimised to a certain extent. The worst part is the stereotypical and formulaic depiction of samud relationship which is truly unwarranted. This crux and concept of the show should be given due respect and attention to keep their magic and chemistry potent. Saras and kumud share the bond of true compatibility. Writers in their attempt to create conflicts between their characters misinterpret kumud's character and make it flawed and inconsistent. It is a relationship of equals who are madly in love, matured and strong personalities giving the much needed freedom and space to each other, two complementing each other not contrasting. The superficial handling of their relationship with no real and emotional connect between them will ruin their chemistry as well as the show. The USP of the show is 'pure, unadulterated romance ' of samud. The old vision, originality, charm, creativity and excellence (if not story) can be redeemed to a certain degree if the same old crew of director, writers and technicians brought back into the show. The onus is on the makers who are at the helm of the show and should take significant action to make the people concerned deliver on their commitments. And on that note I would like to thank the good souls who have taken the initiative and launched a campaign for getting new writers on board (SLB's original choice being the best bargain). London honeymoon over and Bombay dreams calling. Thanks for bearing with the long post and kindly share your views.
