He actually reminds me all that GMT's VC is. He is much more suitable, fitting and apt...first an hesitation than the tremble that started at first sign of his 'joke' going awry...his tenderest 'hush' to his 'incomprehensible' daughter and Then, transformation into a rage, bellow! I don't think other would have delivered such varied and seamless transformation so ably and at the sane time preserving the flavour that is in the book.

Even the day Kumud appeared before the family in her shadi ka joda.., everyone's expression, especially VC's was terrific to watch.. I actually got a lump in my throat when he held her face, teary eyed and said '' dikhti tau ab bhi wesi hi hai ( she still looks the same..the way she did as a kid..).. beautiful scene..and today his reluctance to play the prank on Kumud, when he senses she's upset about something was brilliant.. This VC seems more in control of his emotions.. so for him to cry and have that kind of an emotional outburst, adds to the whole gravity of the situation..and the lights going off.. added to the whole drama.. Dukhba was surprisingly restrained.. Loved Guniyal's reaction too when she was looking aghast at Kumud's face.. This was the moment, when Kumud was surrounded by her family, made me feel for Saras.. This is what he doesn't have.. a family to fall back on...otherwise it was hard to empathise with him today..

Exactly, he is not in his senses...
The man who came to see Kumud on Karva Chauth is not the "man" who spoke to her on the phone... She cares about her family and her marriage more than she cares about him. Period.

When it came to the wire, each of them was as self-centred as the other. Each of them has the excuse of being in shock. Who you sympathise with is a matter of personal choice, for each of us!!

@hgg, I am on Saras' side, and Gautam has a major part to play in that, because he ws able to communicate the distress and numbness to perfection, no false notes... No more and no less.

I don't have any other word except for selfish to describe Saras in the first scene..nothing to say in his defence so I will blame his disturbed psychological state as a reason for the behaviour (He did look like a pale corpse, without any feelings or senses ) How else can one explain, him thinking of only and only his loss in the whole deal..mein andhkar mein doob gaya hoon ..mera koi pariwar nahi hai...mein zinda lash hoon!!!!!! It was me, me and me all the way.. Not even a threat on her life when she says she won't be able to live without him, could melt his heart? Tumhe jeena hoga?? says who?! someone who himself has no strength to cope with his own crisis..? LaxmiNandan might have also felt the same way for Saraswati, that she will live..Lucky for Saras, Kumud is not weak like his mother..and she actually cares about her family way too much to make them suffer with her! Was Kumud wrong in pointing out that because he is a coward who is scared of confrontation, he earlier used a letter and now a phone call to convey his decision? I don't think so..

Has he left her with any choice? her repeated assurances, even urge to come to her once and see that nothing's changed, couldn't touch him.. Calling off the wedding by a phone call from a distant land, 2 days prior to the wedding, without any explanation.. and she is not supposed to break down or panic but keep her personal shock and trauma aside and think of what might have gone wrong on the other end.. and then of ways to fix it for him AGAIN!!!! Are you kiddin' me?!!! What ego is she accused of ? the girl was on her knees begging .. and I feel that it will not be her hurt ego or pride, that will make her agree to her father's decision to marry Pramad.. It will be a daughter, trying to salvage the honor of the father and family.. she will not let the family's reputation be at stake for her.. the promise she made to herself of not shedding a tear for him and forgetting him, is her hurt pride ..but not the decision to get married.. . the fear in her eyes of having to witness their shock and grief when she breaks the news to them ... my heart went out to the girl..

So LN had no clue about Saras..where he was and what he was upto.. so exactly how was he planning to take the baraat to RN? Without the groom?! weakness and escapism- these are the two flaws Saras has inherited from his parents.. Outrageous! The way father and son both hung up on the phone, failing to give any explanation..

What could have Danny possibly done in this circumstance? Not much if you ask me..

I was thinking how they would justify Kumud's immediate marriage to Pramad under current circumstances... now it does seem justified to a great extent...

@red,
And you hit the Nail...
About bold...exactly...in book, her immediate reaction is never described...but this is what she must have felt at receiving that letter, " Priya Ramya Vibhavari...'shashi' jata...grahi kar 'prabhakar' na 'manmanita' " 🤢
I think, SLB has plugged an important lacuna in the tale with quite a finesse and believably...but then, as some one has pointed out, the whole book is all about her death by thousand cuts through out the other marriage.🤢.

@ green,
Agree...and bold; the onus of- explanatory return calls, understanding, sanity, selflessness, solutions, corrections empathy, sympathy, depathy- is all on Desais! After all Vyas males are so 'hansome', they have all right to mess around everywhere...other are there to mop.🤢

@happychappy- If he can be forgiven/excused for not being in his senses, why not Kumud..? why is her love for him questioned despite of all her efforts back then and even now? which girl doesn't love her family or wouldn't want to save her marriage? Which girl wouldn't loose her senses in a situation like this.. ? One fails to see even the most plausible option in such circumstances.. and here she gets a phone call from him sitting in Dubai calling off the wedding 2 days prior to the fixed.. what could she possibly do other than what she did? son hangs up on the phone.. father hangs up on the phone saying he's not my son.. with the family honor at stake, whole world knowing marriage is in 2 days.. for them, hailing from a small village.. is it practically possible to take a flight to Dubai in 2 days?.with Danny gone too? I can stretch my imagination and even think of that scenario, if there was any hope from the other end..

About Gautam, definitely he has played his part well.. he has portrayed the ''weak'' Saras really well.. but I am equally appreciative of Jenny as Kumud.. I could feel every bit of her pain today..

😊

that's how good jennifer was today!

Though most of the times I have refrained HDDCS comments...i wud point out...it is not happening. For simply, widowhood is pinnacle and climax of this story...GMT's 60% volume is post widowhood.

Yes, Viashali, she is left with no options. Jenny as Kumud ws wonderful, as well. Saras-Kumud love as shown in SC was special. Kumud chose marriage and family over that love. That's just my opinion.

Perhaps because she is in shock, and not in her right senses, as well. Life is all about choices, and very often those choices are made in critical situations, and using flawed assumptions. That is life.

Now each of them will have plenty of time later to rue over 'what if''s! We can look forward to that.

It's not even about whether he was in his senses or not. His reaction and dwelling on 'apahij' hurt is proof enough that his temporal functions and logical ability are not all so dead! Then after it's no longer a simple bail out- ' he is not in the senses'. What he does was a conscious discharge and a reckless insult to her 'womanhood'.

Sorry, I have a different view on this.. they both are going through a traumatic phase in their lives.. the first crisis their love had to face.. one person chooses to isolate himself and hurt, humiliate his loved ones even if unintentionally in the process.. the other one sacrifices her love to protect her loved ones from the hurt and humiliation.. I am going to copy paste a comment I read on one of the threads..I found it very true.. '' Sacrificing your love and not belonging to anyone is comparatively easier than belonging to someone else other than your love. '' credit- kavmuks

Anyway, at the end of the day we all loved Saras Kumud and hence get so involved in these debates..
