For the first time we are getting to see a man who's misunderstood, who has to make sacrifices and suffer. Otherwise it was always superhuman, devi-like female characters who had well rounded characters, who made all sacrifices for family and the whole world and who suffered. The men were reduced to romancing or gazing at the woman or torturing her or simply having affairs and several remarriages! Saraswatichandra is like a whiff of fresh air and the first show in which as a viewer one's heart goes out to the male lead!
I am not writing this because I'm a female. My family watches the show and my dad likes Saras a lot. He felt for Saras when he took the allegation of gau-hatya upon himself and became ready to suffer for sake of the family. When Saras was being beaten around, my dad remarked how this poor guy always keeps getting misunderstood or beaten up or scolded by others. And I am not exaggerating, but this is the first time I saw my dad express some empathy for a male character in a TV show! That, in my opinion, is the WIN of Saraswatichandra that it's developing and bringing out the male character really well (complete with his strengths and vulnerabilities, duties and giving nature) and even making the male audience relate to the protagonist, getting them interested in the fate of that guy. Take a bow SLB and SC team! 👏
It was only in some shows in 80s or one or two in 90s that we got to see proper, and humane male leads. A man also has to give a lot of himself. He has a heart too. He has his values too. He isn't just about being a pro at business and laadla heir at home and a passionate (at times violent!) lover! Or a serial philanderer! And this serial is showing the humane side of a male really well.
A whiff of fresh air and a much needed change on Indian TV that was trashing males and putting humanly impossible ideals on female characters alone! I love how Kumud has her flaws too despite all the virtues she possesses. Jennifer's come a long way from her Kasauti days. Her acting is really good. I just feel she needs to look a tad more graceful (that SLB wants to show). But her hairstyle and all...somehow reduce the grace. Her acting is impeccable. But her styling does not really bring out a sense of grace.
Saraswatichandra...the man...whoa! Gautam Rode! I've always written a lot about how he's a revelation in this show. Seriously I did not expect THIS GUY to play THIS character (which requires such sensitivity, has such magnitude and range of emotional layers) with THIS level of convincing-ness and near perfection! I still can't believe this is the same guy who I'd seen in shows like Ghost bana dost on Disney channel! LOL! He's shown what hardwork and tenacity can bring out in a person. Honestly I never thought THIS guy had THIS level of capability as an actor!
Okay, now over with admiration. I think this serial is awesome but is treading on thin ice. With people like Dukhba, Gumam and other sidekick woman with her...this show has every risk of becoming a typical Indian soap with saas-bahu, kitchen politics, bitchy woman, weepy woman type trash. And overdose of romantic scenes could also ruin essence of story and make it another usual love story. Neither do I want it to look like a rehash of moments and characters from SLB's own films.
Given its potential and initial quality it's shown, I pray and hope all risks are avoided and it emerges as a unique show and doesn't fall into trap of a usual Indian telly drag-fest.
Good luck and go on to make history Saraswatichandra! ⭐️
