Chapter 32:

"Good morning sir. I tried calling you after the court announced its decision yesterday, but your phone was out of reach. Anyways, congratulations sir; the court ruled in our favor and announced the well-deserved prison sentence to Mayank."

"Good Pathak. Nice way to start the day. And I've changed my phone number, just for safety measures you know?"

"Right sir, I understand. But until when are you going to keep hiding like this? Don't you think it's time for you to reveal yourself?"

"Enough Pathak, I have told you several times already. I will reveal myself when the time is right."

"They really miss you sir. Kabir has stopped mentioning it but I still see it in his eyes. And Karan, well you know how sensitive he is; it's really tough for him to hide his feelings. I see his face fall every time he sees Gayatri cross in front of him. They have each other of course, but they need you more than ever before."

The man's eyes became moist. "Pathak, more than you, I wish that could be there for them. But now is not the time. There's still more to be done before I can reveal myself."

"As you say sir; I will keep you updated."

Rachna looked away from the beauty of the sunrise to admire her husband who had just made her birthday unforgettable. She caressed his cheek softly, as she turned her body to face him and cuddle into his chest. She toyed around with the top button of his shirt and nuzzled her nose into his collar bone, until he realized what she was up to and grabbed her into his arms. He picked her up and walked into the adjoining room, where a bed sprinkled with rose petals lay as an open invitation to continue what was on Rachna's mind.

Kabir lay Rachna down on the bed softly and bent down over her body, touching his forehead to hers, staring deeply into her eyes.

"Shall we continue with what's on your mind then my love?"

Kabir nibbled on Rachna's earlobe teasingly, as she blushed hearing his words. Rachna grabbed the collar of his shirt and pushed against his chest with both of her hands, as she herself rolled to the opposite site of the bed, away from his reach. She lay on her stomach and rested her chin in her hands, as she looked up at him with a mischievous grin. He himself kicked off his shoes and climbed on top of the bed to lay right next to Rachna. They lay side by side, staring into each other's eyes, slowly drifting closer to one another little by little.

Rachna reached out to touch Kabir's cheek, but the ringing of a cell phone startled her. Kabir closed his eyes and sighed in frustration for a moment before he got up off the bed and picked up his cell phone from the nearby dresser. Seeing the word UNKNOWN flash across the screen, he ignored the call and put his phone on silent. Returning back to Rachna, who was now gazing at him with a dreamy look in her eyes, Kabir pushed her hair out of the way as he placed soft kisses across the exposed skin of her back.

"The plunging back on this dress was certainly a good idea, wouldn't you agree Mrs. Tripathi?"

Rachna blushed as she rolled over from her stomach onto her back and sat up to face Kabir. Placing her head onto his shoulder, she snuggled into his arms and entwined her legs with his. Just as she was about to place her lips onto his, the ringing of her own cell phone caught her off guard. Picking up her purse from the night stand, Rachna saw that it was Sneha calling. She could feel Kabir's finger on her shoulder, toying with the thin strap of her dress, but she pushed his hand away with a teasing smile before, much to the dismay of her husband, picking up the call.

"Hello, Sneha mausi?"

"Good morning Rachna beta. I got your note that you and Kabir have gone out, but beta please come home soon. I have arranged a small pooja for your birthday."

"Oh ok Sneha mausi. I'll be there soon."

As she hung up the call, Rachna could see Kabir's face fall upon hearing her last statement. She turned towards him and snuggled close to his body as she placed an innocent kiss on his cheek.

"Kabir, Sneha mausi called. She has arranged a pooja for me."

He turned his face away from her, clearly disappointed at the unfavorable turn of events.

"I know you're disappointed Kabir, but what should I do? I can't say no to Sneha mausi. After all, she has arranged the pooja for me only."

Kabir's frown deepened on his face.

"I'm sorry baba...I don't want to go either, but I have no choice."

Kabir pushed Rachna's hands off of his body and got up off the bed. He walked out of the room without looking back. "I'll be waiting in the car. Hurry up and come out."

All throughout the pooja, Rachna kept stealing glances at Kabir, who still seemed to be quite angry with her and was avoiding her as much as possible. As much as she wanted to just run away from the crowd and spend some private moments with her husband, Rachna had no choice but to spend her entire day surrounded by her family. By the time the pooja finished, it was time for the lunch event that Sneha had organized. Shail and Dayal had made it a tradition to organize a lunch for the poor at the temple on each of their girls' birthdays. It was a tradition that Sneha wanted to uphold in the memory of her late sister and brother-in-law, for they had always believed that the best way to spend one's birthday was by helping those who were less fortunate.

By the time Rachna finished with the activities at the temple and reached back home, it was past 7 pm and she was extremely tired. Though Sneha had insisted that they spend the night at her house, Rachna had declined the invitation and headed home with Kabir. The car ride home was a silent one, for Kabir was still upset with Rachna and she was much too tired to say anything. After they arrived home, Rachna went straight into the shower to freshen up after the long day. When she emerged from the wash room, she found Kabir standing in the balcony that adjoined their bedroom. Walking up behind Kabir, Rachna quietly put her arms around his waist and rested her face against the back of his shoulder. She felt him stiffen under her hold, but he didn't push her away which was certainly a positive sign.

"I know you're upset with me for what happened this morning and I'm sorry for that. But you know it was out of my control. I didn't know Sneha mausi had planned all this and I couldn't say no to her."

When her words were met with silence, Rachna continued.

"Oh my dear husband, try as you might, I know you can't stay mad at me for too long, especially because I know just how to cheer you up."

With a mischievous grin, Rachna began tickling Kabir and it wasn't long before his frown broke into a smile and then eventual laughter. He grabbed her tightly into his arms and crushed her with a hug. As his hold loosened slightly on her body, Rachna pulled herself out of the embrace and grabbed his hand to lead him back into the privacy of their own bedroom.

"Shall we continue where we left off this morning then? There's still a few hours left until my birthday is over." Rachna said with a teasing smile, as she unleashed her wet hair from the towel on her head.

"With pleasure." Kabir responded in his husky voice, as he joined his wife into the silky comfort of their bed. She caressed his face in her soft hands, as he became intoxicated by the flowery scent that was radiating from her body. She studied him closely, as she sat on his lap and faced him. He gazed back into her eyes with equal intensity, causing her to blush and look away. She pulled him into an embrace as she placed her lips onto his neck, catching him off guard and sending shivers down his spine. She shyly created a trail of kisses all the way up his neck before finally touching her lips to his, causing a spark of passion to be ignited within him. He could contain himself no longer, as he pulled her even closer to himself and passionately sucked on the sweetness of her strawberry lip gloss. The feeling of having her body so close to his, merely separated by two thin shards of cloth, aroused him further. The desires that had been pent up within them for all the months that they had been apart were unleashed and fulfilled within the darkness of the night.
