My Travel Dairy - Jennifer Winget

Massive lagoons in infinite shades of blue and turquoise. Dazzling underwater coral gardens. That's Maldives, Jennifer Winget's favorite holiday destination.

Massive lagoons in infinite shades of blue and turquoise. Dazzling underwater coral gardens. That's Maldives, Jennifer Winget's favorite holiday destination. The Republic of Maldives is made up of 1,200 coral islands, 202 of which are inhabited. Located 600 km southwest of Sri Lanka, the entire country is grouped into 19 administrative blocks. The islands are less than two meters above sea level, and thus, susceptible to the effects of global warming. However, the same geographical feature has also gifted it booming fishing and tourism industries.

It was during one of my shows that I visited Maldives, which I call "heaven on earth". It is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. I can never forget the time that I had spent there. That's also because my performance there went off very well. The turnout and the reaction of the crowd were unexpected.

The islands are extremely beautiful. I love water and that's another reason I am so obsessed with this place. Then the cleanliness and the serene atmosphere are beyond words, especially at night when you can actually see beneath the surface of the water. The blue and green colour of the sea lends the place a fairyland look.

I was put up at a luxury resort hotel on Dhonakulhi Island. Set at an unrivalled tropical paradise, their restaurant Hideaway was remarkable. I had prawns there and since then, whenever I have prawns I invariably compare the two.

Although I was lucky that my work took me to Maldives, unfortunately I couldn't explore the place much as I stayed there for just three days. There are plenty of options for water sports lovers there but I didn't get to try out any. That is why I am determined to go there again and have a blast. For shopping freaks, there are is an amazing variety of accessories available in the market.

The only flip side about Maldives is that it is a bit expensive. But even then, it would be more than worth it for honeymooners. Language is not a barrier as almost everyone speaks English. Just carry lots of free-flowing clothes, and no sweaters please, to let your body soak in Nature at its best.

Jennifer H. Winget: Madonna mode?

Meet Kaarthika. She is 16, attends Raga Music & Dance Academy in Goregaon and dreams of being India?s answer to Madonna some day.

Meet Jennifer H. Winget. She is 19, attends Somaiya College and dreams of ruling the small screen.

Both are one and the same. For, Jennifer plays Kaarthika in the latest serial from the Balaji Telefilms stable. Jennifer was studying in Class V when she went for the audition of Raja ko Rani se Pyar Ho Gaya. ?Before I knew it, I was the daughter in the Arvind Swamy-Manisha Koirala family.?

The next few years, though, she shied away from the camera, attending school. When she returned, it was on the small screen. ?I have been lucky with the steady stream of work since then ? Shakalaka, Kanhaiya, Kkusum, Koi Mere Dil Me Hain? And now this title role,? says Jennifer.

In college and already a regular on the telly, the teenager has taken fame in her stride. ?I have three or four friends who are working in other professions as well. So it?s not a big deal. Today, the standard of living is rising and young people want to make it early in life.?

Education, though, remains a priority. ?My parents never forced me in this regard. Unless studies are hampered, why should children not come before the camera??

Jennifer completely endorses Kaarthika?s ambitions and refuses to label it a rat-race mentality. ?There is nothing wrong in dreaming big and making the best of opportunities.?

She cringes on being called a Divya Bharti lookalike. ?Maybe it is the hairstyle that does it,? she muses. Clearly, the compliment has worn out its appeal.

If there is one difference between Jennifer and her screen character, it is their musical talent. The wannabe Madonna is strictly a bathroom singer. ?The audience would run away if I sing. I am lip-syncing for a few film numbers like Jane kyon and Bhage re.?

Meet Jennifer as Kaarthika on Hungama TV, at 6.30 pm, from Monday to Thursday.

Simplicity and Comfort is my style statement...

Jennifer Winget talks about Fashion in our weekly article on Fantastic 4's...

What is Fashion for You?

Comfort and Simplicity!

What are you most comfortable in?

I feel good wearing a mini skirt as well as a sari. I choose the clothes I feel comfortable in, as I believe that when one is comfortable, beauty follows.

One accessory you can't go without?

It has to be my ring.

The things which are always in your Bag will be..

Perfume and Mint.

Who do you think is the best dressed person in telly world?

That will have to be Achint Kaur. She is stylist to the core..

Which color do you prefer to wear always?

Black and White.

Has your fashion sense changed from your college days to now?

Yes, it has drastically changed. In college, I was giggly type and I used to wear jeans and T-shirt with a tight pony tail. Now I am more into fashion, because my line expects that. We have to go out and meet different people, so we need to be concise about what we are wearing and I think change is a part of life. In the next 20 years, I will probably change again.

Who is your favorite designer?

Right now, Jerry. He not so famous, but for me he gives me the best and the attires that look nice on me.

Where do you pick your attires from?

I don't have a specific shopping place. I can shop anywhere. I can shop from a mall to a street. But I enjoy shopping in Malaysia and Bangkok.

Is there any fashion blooper you have made?

One such incident happened when I went to a party. It was basically a chilled out and I went there in a bridal dress. It was so embarrassing that I went to the rest room and removed the heavy accessories that I could.

One Outfit, you feel can never go wrong?

I think sari suits everyone and will never go wrong for any occasion. Once you know how to carry yourself in it, then you really feel great.

Do you have your own style statement or do you follow the trend?
I don't follow the trend, I just wear anything that looks good on me and will work.

Any fashion tips for your fans..

Be yourself. Look at yourself in the mirror. If you find yourself looking the best, then you're all set.

India Shining !!

Is India really shining or has the potential to shine? We queried few telly stars and they have shared their thoughts with us..

" We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made ! "

Albert Einstein

Not only this, we have also gifted world the grammar and logic, philosophy and fables, hypnotism and chess, and above all numerals and the decimal system. This is what makes India, India! A nation of hope of more than one billion people, a nation which is all about celebrating life! All this makes India Shine, a country which is full of hope, enthusiasm and spirit.

But is India really shining? India has been the country hit badly with most number of terrorist attacks last year, inflation has now reached a new height, some villages are still waiting for electricity and basic amenities, in quality education we've a lot to do and achieve, dowry deaths still take place in India. But ,As someone said, if you cannot solve or take initiative to solve the problem, you are part of it! So lets make India what it was or at least take a step towards it'

Our small screen starlets have taken a step towards this goal and shared with us their thoughts on India and what we need to do to get the status of India

Jennifer Winget :

Do you think India is shining?

Of course, India is shining. If you compare the life 20 years back to our present, you will see the difference. We have many exceptionally talented and intelligent people in our country and they are the ones who contribute to our growth.

What do we need to improve upon to be a developed nation?

I think there is a lack of awareness in all the fields. When a person wants to make a home nice, and he does not know how to go about it, then is there any use? And education is the way in which we can spread this awareness everywhere. If education is the key, then awareness is the also a key to better future.

One thing that you've learned from last year as an Indian.

Last year was not a good year at all, especially the way in which it ended. It was tragic and I think if we are to avoid such incidents in future, we need to upgrade our security and protection. Instead of crying over spilt milk, we need to learn the ways of tackling it even before we face it.

The most proud moment of India according to you, of last year..

I don't know about last year, but this year it has to be A.R. Rahman winning the Golden Globe Award. He has brought us into the international picture, and made the entertainment industry proud. He has given us a new hope to visualize our dreams.

Which politician/personality do you think has the potential to be Indian Obama and why?

I think our politicians are competent in their own way. But instead of thinking all this, they need to take the situation in their hands and do their best.

I have no problem whatsoever in exposing: Jennifer Winget

It's a open heart conversation with Jyothi Venkatesh that Jennifer Winget touches various issues such as the show Zara Nachke Dikha, her fear of stage performance, Ganga in Sangam and above all her indomitable intention to act in films...

What exactly is Zara Nachke Dikha?
From a 10 year old boy to a 65 year old woman, across professions and in every corner of the country, both the genders have always wondered which the greater sex is after all. It is an attempt on the part of Star One to solve the debate on the gender war and is a battle of the sexes on the dance floor.

The show will be telecast twice a week with eight boys and eight girls - all celebrities from the television industry who will be pitted against each other to prove their dancing mettle and hence superiority gender-wise, as a team. The best part of the show is that only the jury decides the winning team of the episode every week.

Is Zara Nachke Dikha your first attempt at taking part in a reality show?
Yes. It is for the first time that I am taking part in a reality show like Zara Nachke Dikha on Star One.

Though I think I have managed to learn acting to a large extent ever since I had made my debut as an actress, I am aware of the bitter truth that I am not a trained dancer and hence I wanted to hone up my dancing talent and I thought by taking part in the show, I will get a chance to automatically learn the various intricate dancing steps.

At the same time I also wanted to get rid of my stage fright.

Shows besides Zara Nachke Dikha you are associated with...
Right now the only show in which I am acting besides Zara Nachke Dikha is Sangam which is on air on Star Plus. I have been teamed opposite Chaitanya Chowdhury in the show, which is going great guns.

How do you manage to strike a balance between your serial Sangam as well as the reality show Zara Nachke Dikha?
I am thankful to Fox, the producers of my show Sangam, that they have let not only me but Chaitanya also to take time off to take part in the rehearsals for the reality show.

What is your role in the serial Sangam?
I play the role of Ganga, a sweet and bubbly girl who makes the transition from being an innocent village girl to a mature lady, thanks to the circumstances in which she finds herself in her journey in life and the trials and tribulations that she faces in her life, because she goes through a lot of muck.

How do you relate your reel life character Ganga with that of your real life?
When we started a year and a half ago, I could relate to Ganga when she was a sweet and bubbly and carefree young girl because I, too, was the same then. Now I am able to relate to the mature character of Ganga because like in reel life, there is thehrao in my real life, too, since, I, too, have matured like Ganga has in the show.

Would you say that your journey in life is similar to that of Ganga?
As far as emotion and growth are concerned, I can say that I relate to Ganga's journey in life somewhere, though I do not think I am as sweet as Ganga.

Tell me about your beginning as a child star.
It was with the film Raja Ko Rani Se Pyaar Ho Gaya that I had made my debut as a child actor way back when I was just a twelve year old kid. The acting bug bit me since my mother has been working for the last several years, with producer R. Mohan who was making films under the banner of Good Night Films.

If I am not mistaken, you have already made your debut in films!
Yes. I had made my debut in films with Kuch Na Kaho as the younger sister of Abhishek Bachchan. Even now I am open for acting in films that come my way but I want to go a step ahead. I do not however want to take up roles as either a sister or a friend any more, because thankfully I have grown out of it after doing Kuch Na Kaho.

How comfortable will you be as far as exposing in films considering there is hardly any need for you to expose in Sangam?
In real life, I can comfortably carry off both western as well as Indian costumes. I am comfortable wearing skirts as well as saris. As far as exposure in films is concerned, all that I would like to say is that as long as one is comfortable with what one is wearing, I do not think should have any problem whatsoever.

You are not a trained actress. Where did you learn acting?
To tell you the truth, the television industry has been my training ground as far as acting is concerned. TV has taught me a lot since the time I had made my debut with Shakalaka.

Though I think that I have to learn a lot, I feel that I have had an immense growth as an actor. When I look back at the beginning of my career, I feel that today I can do any kind of scene, be it an emotional scene or a comic one.

What is your approach to acting?
Though I have always believed that spontaneity plays a very vital role for any actress, I also feel that preparation is equally necessary to bring out the best in you as an actor. I feel that on the spot emotion when you perform on the sets without preparation affects the audience because it comes from within you.

Why do you maintain a very low profile when other actresses flaunt their latest scandals or boast about their latest cars?
I have always believed in keeping certain things private in my life, because whatever I do, people will come to know eventually for the simple reason that I am a public figure since I am acting in a popular serial.

Which among your roles has been very close to you till date?
I would not hesitate to mention that my roles in both Kasauti Zindagi Ki and Sangam have been and will always remain very close to my heart, because both Sneha and Ganga have been diverse as well as rich characters, which have taught me a hell of a lot as an actor. I think I owe whatever success that I have achieved till date to these two characters.

- Jyothi Venkatesh
