The sun had set. Another day came to an end. Students of Founder's Institute of Technological Engineering (FITE) were already in bed after a tiring day. But someone at the boy's hostel was still awake. Someone was pacing restlessly, up and down the unlit corridors. Relentlessly.
Randhir Singh Shekawat was not used to being anxious and confused. Infact, he avoided any frivolous emotions at all cost. But to night he couldn't escape any of them. If emotions were colored glass; his was a kaleidoscope right now.
She was getting married tomorrow. And he was happy. Wasn't he? He had been waiting for Miss Sanyukta Agrawal to leave FITE for ages. Now that his dream has come true then why isn't he feeling pleased? Why is he having a hollow feeling in his stomach? Why does he feel as if he is about to lose something very precious? May be because he is in love...
"No! No Randhir Singh Shekawat. You are not in love with her!" he berated himself. "You cannot be!"
He paced once again. Tomorrow she would become Mrs Sameer Mital. "What the hell kind of name is that? Mital?" he mused "Agrawal suits her better. Sounds as arrogant as she is in real life." He smirked.
He walked back to his room thinking of how life would be without her. Nothing felt remotely good. Suddenly a thought occurred to him. "Maybe I should go and see how she is? It's only right that I should be the first one to congratulate her on her marriage." He grinned "I made it happen after all."
He changed quickly and then sneaked out of FITE. Got on his bike and drove to Delhi. He had lot of time to think. So he thought. He thought of the day he first met her. It was the day he had gone to check his entrance exam results. The one he topped. She was scribbling furiously on the black board trying to solve a very unique equation. And of course she was doing it wrong. Yes she got the answer right. But like everything she does in her life, she took a round about method to solve it. He corrected her and he saw it in her face that she didn't appreciate it. Randhir shook his head in disgust; the girl doesn't even understand when someone was genuinely trying to help her. Aggressive, headstrong, stubborn, manipulative, determined and compassionate. All these adjectives perfectly described Sanyukta Agrawal.
He admired her and she challenged him. He really put her through the ringer for last couple of years. But she always came through each of his challenge. It might not be wrong to even say she bested him too. Not always. No not at all. No one could best Randhir Singh Shekawat all the time. But yes if truth be told she did come second best to him.
Everything in his life changed when she walked in to FITE. Everything in his life became about her. God! How obsessed he had become. Still is. Isn't it why he was on his bike in the middle of the night trying to see her once again.
Randhir was troubled at the direction his thoughts were taking. What would happen when he could no longer see her? He had heard her "chomu" fiance was going to take her abroad where they were going to settle down. Good for her, she would be back in the life that was meant for her. But what about him? Is he ok with not seeing her ever again? Not bickering with her? Not holding her in his arms?
He stopped the bike. His heart was pounding. He tasted panic. Oh no! He was having an anxiety attack. This can't be happening! He thought, trying to take deep breathes with hopes of calming himself down. He is Randhir Singh Shekawat. He doesn't get panic attacks. Not over a girl. Not over Sanyukta Agrawal. And definitely not in the middle of the road, for crying out loud!
"I can't be in love!" He said the words out loud. "I can't be in love!" he repeated in desperation. "I can't be..." he couldn't say it again. Not convincingly any way. He began to pace. Rapping his fists on his forehead. He remembered their first "non kiss". That made him smile. He remembered all the pranks he played on her. He began to laugh. He remembered how it felt holding her, albeit aggressively, in his arms. They were both aggressive people. Then he tried to think of going back to FITE, without having her there to irritate him, to nag him and to challenge him. And he couldn't do it!He couldn't imagine his life without her. It was as if his whole life suddenly split in to two parts. One before Sanyukta Agrawal and one after. And he realized with shocking clarity that he didn't want to go back to a life without her. He could. But he didn't want to. "I am in love!" he said slowly as if he was testing the words coming out of his mouth. There was wonder, surprise and shock in the tone of his voice. "Iam in love with Sanyukta Agrawal" he repeated. This time the words didn't choke him. "Damn it! I am in love with her!" His voice was strong and resigned. "She is mine!" he thought with more pride and conviction. Human mind is wonderful isn't it? In matter of few minutes he went from denial to confession to possessiveness. Then again he had always been possessive and territorial about her. Even when he hated her. All he had to do was to open his mind and listen to his heart. "Great! Now I will have to do something to stop her from marrying her buffoon fiance." He said in exasperated tone. He marched towards his bike, donned his helmet and started the engine. "You better be ready, Sanyukta. I am coming for you."
