Part 2Vinay turned back to his wife and his jaw dropped, "That look's for my BROTHER?"
Bindiya blinked, still trying get over her initial reaction at seeing him. She'd never seen him up so close, not since the wedding. He'd barely spoken to her since then, barring the yelling, of course. She swallowed nervously, trying to understand what he was saying. She followed his eyes as he looked back towards the hall, at his brother. His words slowly registered in her mind, "That look's for my BROTHER?"
She blinked again as understanding dawned on her. OH.
She smiled nervously as he looked back at her. He seemed to be expecting a reply. She shook her head and continued smiling.
He frowned, as if unsure, and said slowly, "Then, why are you looking like that?"
She swallowed and raised her eyebrows innocently, "Like what?"
It was his turn to swallow nervously, "Like...like." And then, he must have decided against whatever he wanted to say. Shaking his head he began walking away.
Bindiya watched him retreat as her breathing finally returned to normal. She cringed mentally, his BROTHER?
She turned back to the party and sat amongst the rest of the family, being careful not to look at her husband. But she knew. She knew, this time, he was the one watching her. And she knew he didn't believe her.
---
Bindiya sat in front of the dresser, lost in thought and carelessly removing her bangles. There was something about his expression, when he'd called her out. Jealousy? No, she shook her head. Why would he be jealous. It wasn't exactly anger either. Although why he should be angry, she didn't know. It wasn't exactly as if this were a marriage in the true sense. She looked into the mirror, her own wide eyes staring back at her and she smiled.
This happened to her sometimes. A thought would plant itself inside her head. Sometimes, it would disappear. But more often,
like now, it would become bigger and bigger until it engulfed her. She began removing the rest of her jewelry as her mind raced. It was true. This was a NOT a marriage in the true sense. He had no obligation to her, and neither did she to him. She could fall in love with whomever she wanted, and so could he. That stopped her short. What if he was already in love with somebody else? She shook herself and brought herself back to the previous idea. She could fall in love with whomever she wanted. And who better than Bimlesh? He was single. He was nice. And she wouldn't even have to step out of the house. He was the perfect person to fall in love with. She crinkled her nose at the mirror. Well, not love, actually. She would just pretend to, of course.
---
She was rolling her blanket onto the floor when Vinay walked into the bedroom. She smiled at him. He stopped short, but continued walking after giving her a wary look.
She chuckled silently, and then softly whispered, "Thanks hubby." It was, of course, he who gave her the idea. She had said it low enough for him to not have heard, but loud enough for her to know that she had said it. She smiled widely at her own audacity. He looked at her as if she'd grown an extra head before pulling the blanket over his head. She did the same, but she didn't close her eyes and fall instantly asleep like her husband. Instead, her mind began working. And once it started, there was no stopping it.
Because this time, she had a plan.
Really.
