...with a twist!

Prologue

She knew it was happening to her, but she was detached from it somehow, as if watching somebody else. She could hear her sisters whimpering, her brother looking down at them belligerently. It didn't matter to him that no happiness would come out of this.

Her eyes began tearing as she continued staring into the fire. She felt the man next to her flinch as the pundit ji told him more things to do. He seemed to be performing automatically, as if this was nothing out of ordinary. As if this were a love match with happy blessing from the parents. As if this wedding would bring any kind of peace to this household. As if this man actually wanted to marry this woman.

She knew when her about to-be husband turned to look at her. He had taken a bit of sindoor in between his fingers at the pundit ji's insistence. She turned her face to him, as expected. Her eyes were lowered. Nothing happened for a few seconds. She slowly raised her eyes to see two very familiar brown ones staring back at her, with shock and a hint of disgust. She stifled her own gasp. What had her brother done?

Hey all! I figured since the creatives are slow on picking up romance, I'll start writing some scenes I had in mind for these two and turn into an FF! I am actually new on this forum and still catching up on the show, so please do correct me if I make mistakes on relationships and such in the family.

The prologue turned out a bit dark, but this will be a comedy. I think we have enough drama in the show, right?

@ Sravi: OMG, OMG (excuse the caps but I am soo ecstatic to find u and Neetz both here). Well, well! I guess I have started u off on the show then *hehehe*. And that too with a killer prologue and a killer ff. Can't wait for the main story to begin. I love reading fanfics, especially those penned down by the great likes of u and Neetz, etc etc. This one has caught my attention. I am adding your post to the fanfics collection post under Media Center. Hope u're finding the show interesting. With its slow pace, u'll actually catch up really fast to present ;)

First Shruti, then Nishtha, then Neetz, then u.. The year's ending on a good note for me.. Wohooo..*dances*

Cheers,
Sana~

Alright, in my FF Bhimlesh is still single. And you'll be surprised by Bindiya. She's not meek or a pushover.

Part 1

Bindiya smiled as she offered maaji a cup of tea. She bent down and touched her feet, taking her blessing. Turning to her father-in-law, she forced another smile on her face. He balked at that, never having been on the receiving end of her good humor. She gave him the other cup and slid down in the seat between the two. Sitting across from her was Shobha bhabhi, looking at her with suspicion. Bindiya smiled internally. Life was good.

---

Bindiya stood behind the sofa watching the merriment around her. Everybody was excitedly chattering about the surprise. Bindiya scoffed at their enthusiasm. Talking about it every second of everyday wasn't exactly the way to go about giving a surprise. But she didn't say or do anything to stop it. Fact was, she enjoyed every bit of it. Talking about their family was the only way these people actually opened up to her. When she wasn't forcing them to open, that is. It had taken her three weeks to devise this plan. Three weeks of torture. Three weeks of suffering Poonpoonwali's disdain, her father-in-law's sarcasm, and her mother-in-law's indifference. Three weeks of being a doormat and pushover. She had given them three weeks to express their horror at having a bride forced into their house. And that was all she was willing to give them. While their anger was justified, she was also a pawn in this game her brother had played. Damned if she'd be the only one paying consequences.

And so that was how she had come up with the plan. The plan wasn't anything really. She would bend them all to her will, each and every one of them. Bua and Rekha were the easiest to break. One look at Bindiya and they were ready to lay their lives for her. Bindiya giggled at her own exaggeration, drawing the attention of several people around her. She quickly straightened up and tried to look nonplussed. They just shook their heads at her and went back to talking amongst themselves.

And then there had been mummyji. She was easier than she had expected. Do a little housework, give a few orders, praise her own handiwork, and she was in. Her father-in-law was difficult. He had stopped throwing sarcastic remarks about her and her upbringing when she was around. But Shobha bhabhi sure brought out the worst in him. When they were together, there just was no stopping them. So Bindiya made sure to avoid them as much as possible. Coming to Akhilesh, her elder brother-in-law was a stickler for praise. Praise him here and there everyday, and boy would he be waiting for more. Everyday now, he would look forward for Bindiya to greet him. "Bindiya, come sit here." "Bindiya, tell me what you want." "Bindiya, how do you like my new shirt." Pshh...like she would actually say what she felt out loud. You and your new shirt can go to hell. Of course, it drove his wife up the wall, and that just made Bindiya even more enthusiastic in praising him. Her other brother-in-law Bhimlesh was different. She really didn't have to do anything to make him like her. He was a nice guy and she genuinely liked him.

She shuddered. Argh...what was with the alphabetical order in this family? Akhilesh, Bhimlesh, Chinmay...oh wait, her husband's name was Vinay. Her nose crinkled as she chuckled silently at her own joke. Where was this husband of hers anyway? Her eyes scanned around the room and she spotted him, sitting next to his bhabhi. Hmph, let him sit next to the witch. They both are from the same species anyway. She sighed. She guessed she shouldn't be so hard on him. He was turning out much better than she'd expected. He'd only yelled at her three times since the wedding, while she'd mentally yelled at him 17 times. But then he couldn't hear her, so she guessed they didn't count. And he had stopped kicking her out of their room. And she was used to sleeping on the floor even at her own house, so she couldn't blame him for taking the bed and showing her to the floor. But...but, she liked blaming him. Him and that stupid bhabhi of his.

Everybody calmed down and straightened as they heard the door open. Bindiya rolled her eyes. As if suddenly being quiet NOW would change things. But she went along with them. She hid behind the couch and sprung up as the door opened. Everyone yelled, "SURPRISE!" Bhimlesh looked around at everyone, his mouth open in shock. Bindiya was amazed. This guy was good. He really looked surprised. And then the chaos began. Everyone was hugging and singing, praising and laughing. She tried to mingle and everyone, for the most part, accepted her.

An hour or so into the party, Bindiya picked her plate and moved behind the sofa again. She liked observing. She liked watching the family when they weren't plotting against one another and scheming things. They genuinely seemed to love each other. She sighed as her eyes landed on the family portrait. Her eyes scanned over the faces in the picture. Everyone looked so happy. Her mother-in-law and father-in-law were sitting in the center, with their two younger sons standing on either side, while the older son and his wife were behind them. She stared at the portrait in longing, wondering where she fit in. A movement behind her caused her to turn and she gasped, finding her husband staring back at her.

---

She turned those eyes filled with longing on him and he was a goner. Why WAS she looking at him like that? His heart began beating like crazy while he tried to figure out if he'd been nicer than usual to her these past few days. Otherwise, why would she be looking at him with such longing? And then something clicked inside and he leaned forward, facing the wall she'd been looking at. He had the shock of his life when he saw his brother, Bhimlesh, standing in the very spot.

He turned back to his wife and his jaw dropped, "That look's for my BROTHER?"

Part 2

Vinay turned back to his wife and his jaw dropped, "That look's for my BROTHER?"

Bindiya blinked, still trying get over her initial reaction at seeing him. She'd never seen him up so close, not since the wedding. He'd barely spoken to her since then, barring the yelling, of course. She swallowed nervously, trying to understand what he was saying. She followed his eyes as he looked back towards the hall, at his brother. His words slowly registered in her mind, "That look's for my BROTHER?"

She blinked again as understanding dawned on her. OH.

She smiled nervously as he looked back at her. He seemed to be expecting a reply. She shook her head and continued smiling.

He frowned, as if unsure, and said slowly, "Then, why are you looking like that?"

She swallowed and raised her eyebrows innocently, "Like what?"

It was his turn to swallow nervously, "Like...like." And then, he must have decided against whatever he wanted to say. Shaking his head he began walking away.

Bindiya watched him retreat as her breathing finally returned to normal. She cringed mentally, his BROTHER?

She turned back to the party and sat amongst the rest of the family, being careful not to look at her husband. But she knew. She knew, this time, he was the one watching her. And she knew he didn't believe her.

---

Bindiya sat in front of the dresser, lost in thought and carelessly removing her bangles. There was something about his expression, when he'd called her out. Jealousy? No, she shook her head. Why would he be jealous. It wasn't exactly anger either. Although why he should be angry, she didn't know. It wasn't exactly as if this were a marriage in the true sense. She looked into the mirror, her own wide eyes staring back at her and she smiled.

This happened to her sometimes. A thought would plant itself inside her head. Sometimes, it would disappear. But more often, like now, it would become bigger and bigger until it engulfed her. She began removing the rest of her jewelry as her mind raced. It was true. This was a NOT a marriage in the true sense. He had no obligation to her, and neither did she to him. She could fall in love with whomever she wanted, and so could he. That stopped her short. What if he was already in love with somebody else? She shook herself and brought herself back to the previous idea. She could fall in love with whomever she wanted. And who better than Bimlesh? He was single. He was nice. And she wouldn't even have to step out of the house. He was the perfect person to fall in love with. She crinkled her nose at the mirror. Well, not love, actually. She would just pretend to, of course.

---

She was rolling her blanket onto the floor when Vinay walked into the bedroom. She smiled at him. He stopped short, but continued walking after giving her a wary look.

She chuckled silently, and then softly whispered, "Thanks hubby." It was, of course, he who gave her the idea. She had said it low enough for him to not have heard, but loud enough for her to know that she had said it. She smiled widely at her own audacity. He looked at her as if she'd grown an extra head before pulling the blanket over his head. She did the same, but she didn't close her eyes and fall instantly asleep like her husband. Instead, her mind began working. And once it started, there was no stopping it.

Because this time, she had a plan. Really.
