Part 8

Meera and Vidya walked into the Suryavanshi house, laughing and talking. An angry Gaura stood blocking their way and started insulting them, saying that the Modi girls were ill-bred and didn't have any manners. Meera and Vidya, however, looked at her and laughed even more, making Gaura even angrier. "You think this is funny don't you?" You won't be laughing when I am through with..." Gaura realized what she had said and stopped. Meera asked "What did you say?" Gaura replied, "oh, nothing...what I meant was, I would make life hell for you and your sister in this house" "Remember, neither Shravan nor Dharam are here to protect you" Meera and Vidya walked up close to her, and Vidya said,"We can protect ourselves very well. So you do what you can and we will do what we must". They walked away, leaving a fuming Gaura behind. "You two won't be so smug, when I am done with your Maa and your Daadi".

She took out her phone and watched a video on it. Her face took on a manic expression. I will destroy your whole family Kokila Modi, you can bet on that and I never fail!"

Meera looked at the camera in her hand. She walked into Gauras room with Vidya. While Vidya kept watch, she looked for good location to hide the camera. Before she could do so, Vidya called out urgently to her. Baaji was coming. Meera cursed and walked back out. As they both neared Meeras room, Gaura appeared. She looked at them suspiciously and asked, "Where is that Nani of yours?" "Oh, Nani misses being with Daadi and wants to stay there for a while". "Ahh, yes..I heard..your Mom..has lost her mind right?' Poor Gopi" she said..taunting Meera. Vidya immediately asked her, "Baaji, how did you know this?" Gaura cursed inwardly at her slip. Vidya pressed on "Noone in my family likes you, so I don't think they would share information like that with you, so how did you know?" Gaura said, do you think I am the only enemy the Modis have? People in the market talk and I heard from there". "Poor gopi. You both must be really sad right. Since you just got her back and soon she will be leaving you again". Meera calmed herself and refused to take the bait. She closed her eyes and counted to 10 and walked up to Gaura, moving so close to her that Gaura had to take a step back to increae the distance between them. "You don't have worry about Mom because this is a small setback for her. Before you know it, she will be well and the one who will be going mad, will be you and your marketplace aunties". With a big yawn right directed at Gauras face, Meera stretched like cat and said, "I am very tired today and I bet Vidya is too, so we are going to sleep now. Have a good day" With that she marched away towards her room, pulling Vidya along with her. To Vidya she said, "Her good days will be ending very soon. Gaura too, entered her room, and closed the door. "Something is going on, I have to reach PL and Madhu.

Meanwhile at the Modi House, Ahem,Tolu and Molu set up the cameras in Pls and Madhu rooms respectively. "We will see what these two are up to, though we already know. But more evidence is always better. Just then, Urmila came up with Gopi and told them that Jigar was 10 min away. After doing a sweep of the room to ensure nothing was left behind, they strode out and locked the rooms from the outside, leaving it just the way it was before. Ahem and Gopi strolled to their room . He gave her a quick reassuring hug and put the restraints back on her. He took a deep breath and reluctantly went back down to the hall, leaving Gopi alone.

Ahem pretended to be reading a newspaper as Jigar walked in, looking dishevelled and dirty. Behind him, walked PL who was still holding her face, followed by Madhu. Hetal and Urmila came in from the kitchen and on seeing them in this state started feigning concern. "What happened? Jigar are you all alright?" PL tried to rush up to her room but was stopped by an overly concerned Urmila. "Koki? What happened to you?" Are you alright?" Let me look at your face" Are you in pain?" She fired question after question at PL. Madhu came up to Urmila and stopped her. "Urmila, we just went through a terrifying ordeal and her face is burnt too. She just wants to apply some ointment" "Oh my god" exclaimed Urmila, Koki shall I help you? PL shook her head vigorously and ran up"

"Will someone tell me what happened? Hetal shouted. Why are you all in this state?" Madhu sat down and told her of the robbery. "We had everything in our bags" Our money, our phones". "Hetal picked up the phone and said, "This is terrible! We better inform the police about this" At the mention of police, Madhu said..no..no..no need for the police..it is a small matter..it is ok.. But Madhu..No Hetal..It is ok..we are alright and that is what matters". Hetal nodded and put the phone down. "If you insist then". Urmila went to Madhu and said "You wait here Madhu, I will get you something to eat and drink. You must be hungry too". Hetal, why don't you go and check on Koki, she might need your help. Madhu stood up and said..no I will go..why trouble yourself?" "Nono Madhu, you just went through an ordeal' said Hetal, getting up."It is best you rest. I will go. Madhu was flustered and couldn't believe how everything was falling apart in front of her eyes. As Hetal walked up, she could only pray that PL wasn't with Gopi.

Hetal saw that Gopi's room was open, which meant PL was in Kokila's room. She tried to hide her anger and knocked on PLs door. "Kokila, are you ok?" Let me help you with the ointment" PL shouted from inside that it was ok. She has applied the ointment and was just tired and wanted to sleep." Hetal could be persistent if she wanted to and now she needed PL downstairs. Kokila, come and eat first then you can rest." I will not let you starve". Mota Bhabi I will be down later. I will wait for you right here, Kokila." PL started cursing silently. She put the mask back on again and came out. "What is this Kokila, you haven't freshened up?" "Mota Bhabi.." Never mind..you can eat then freshen up..you must be very tired. Come lets go down". As they walked, PL asked if Gopi had woken up. Hetal lied that she woke up and started screaming just now, but Ahem got the doctor to give her a stronger injection, which would make her sleep longer. "Your time has come PL, enjoy what time you have left"

Gaura sat on her bed and laid out her chess pieces. She noticed 2 pawns missing and remembered tossing them to Meera and Vidya. She went to their room and saw the two girls engaged in an intense conversation. As she moved closer to listen, her blood started to boil.

With PL and Madhu both downstairs, they all went to sit at the dining table. Midway through the meal, Ahem received a call, which he put on speaker. It was Meera. Dad, I have something to tell you. I think Gaura is involved in making Mom mad. Ahem gasped. "what?" Meera proceeded to relate her confrontation with Gaura, also mentioning about how Gaura knew Gopi's mental state. Dad, Daadi couldn't have told her, no one in our family would have told her so how did she know? She claims someone in the market told her but that is bullshit I know. "That means someone here wants to harm us" he said, looking around. PL and Madhu were, by this time, very uncomfortable. Without their phones, they couldn't even communicate with Gaura.

PL was shocked at the news. "Hey Krishna Bhagvan! Who would do this to us! Why make poor Gopi go through all this?" Madhu followed suit. The walls were closing in on PL and Madhu though they didn't know it. The spider was caught in its own web.

Meera continued, "Daadi, be careful. I also heard that she was planning something against you. But don't worry Daadi, we will not let anything happen to you" Anyway dad, I have to go now. "Be careful, Beta and be sure to let us know if she is planning anything new".

Meera hung up her phone and smiled. PL and Madhu and Gaura would be sweating now. They will sure try to do something tonight. She saw a message on her phone from Ahem. "Good Job". "Thanks..but Dad make sure they are watched." The next message said "All taken care off :-).

Gaura sneaked back into her room. "You think you are so smart, warning your family about you're your problems are coming from sides that you never thought would attack you" and cackled. No one can touch us. "I wonder what those 2 stupid fools are doing?" They were supposed to report to me every day!" "Should I go there?" She decided against it. "I heard PL's voice on the speaker just now, so things must be still going as planned. She proceeded to hum a happy song.

PL and Madhu spent the rest of the day holed up in their rooms. They were waiting for nightfall so that they could go and take out their anger on Kokila. The family was troubling them, so they would trouble her. They also needed to get new phones but couldn't do it just yet. Impatiently, they waited.

Finally, dinnertime came. After a rushed meal, PL and Madhu to retired early as claiming that they exhausted. Ahem, Jigar too said that they wanted to do the same. Urmila and Hetal stayed on to complete the rest of the housework and at about 10pm, the house was dark and all was quiet.

Tolu, Molu and Kokila walked back to the house, where the modis were all waiting for them. She hugged all of them back, especially Gopi. "Thank you, Gopi" "You do know me the best", she said. If it wasn't for you, I would still be trapped in the tank. No maaji, it wasn't me alone." "Without the support of everyone here, we would not have been able to do this". Ahemji was the one who called on some of his contacts for help to bring you out safely." "Even Meera, and Vidya helped. And they are now causing problems for Gaura there." "I am so glad to see you Kokila" Hetal and Urmila said. We didn't know how long we could pretend being nice to them, knowing what snakes they were.

"It is late, we should all get some sleep" Ahem said. Tomorrow will be the last day we will have to endure those 3.

They went back to their respective rooms, looking forward to the next morning.

Dawn broke upon them and unlike the past few days, the atmosphere was lighter. Everyone was up early and prayed together. Arti was done by Kokila as the rest of the family looked on. After which they sat down for breakfast together. After breakfast, while Gopi was doing the dishes, Kokila went to her in the kitchen and asked her if she was really alright. Gopi replied "Yes, maaji..I am alright. We are all happy that nothing serious has happened to you. Kokila kissed Gopi's forehead and left the kitchen, happy that Gopi was unscathed. Ahem had seen his Mom go into the kitchen, and followed her. He was still paranoid about the whole thing and wanted to make sure that it was indeed Kokila and not PL in the house now. He walked in to check on Gopi and saw that she was alright. He sneaked up behind her and hugged her. They stood like that for a while, enjoying each other's company. Finally, he tore himself away from her, flashed her a smile left the kitchen.

Kokila looked at the clock and said it was time for her to meet Gaura. Ahem and Urmila said they would follow her too.

Meera and Vidya were in the hall as Gaura was leaving the house. They looked at her and asked where she was going. Gaura smiled and replied "To kill your maa, are you happy?" Stop asking me where I am going or what I am doing as all this is none of your business" she added. Meera was about to hit Gaura but Vidya held her hand and laughed. "Try as hard as you want to kill Maa, but that is not something that will ever happen because she is protected, unlike you".

Gaura smiled smugly. "You won't be so confident this evening my dear Vidya". She looked at them and walked off, calling her driver. She got into the car and headed to her rendezvous with PL.

Meera and Vidya decided to wait till they got the go ahead from the rest before making their way home, just in case Gaura turned back. They knew she too was suspicious of them so they had to be careful. And too many things were at stake to allow the slightest mistake.

Gaura arrived at the meeting point. She saw Kokila there alone, and went up to her. You have not been followed?' she asked. Kokila laughed the PL laugh. "I told you, the Modis are stupid".

Ahem whispered to the Urmila, I will be very happy when this ends. Mom imitates PL so well that I still cannot tell who is who. Behind them, they heard some sounds. As they turned, they saw Tolu and Molu emerge with a plastic bag and a cage of mice. Ahem and Urmila stepped away from them while keeping an eye on Kokila and Gaura.

"Come, Gopi and Kokila are inside". She let Gaura climb ahead of her. Then she signalled to the rest to come out quietly as Gaura climbed up the ladder and opened the cover of the tank and climbed in. It took a while for her eyes to adjust themselves to the darkness inside. She saw Kokila first and slapped her, telling her how her grandchildren have been troubling her and how she will avenge her brother today. She was about to slap the second person, thinking it was Gopi but she realized that it was Madhu instead. She was taken aback. A voice above her asked, What were you expecting, Gaura?" Gaura looked up and saw Kokila. She realized that she has been trapped. Gaura ripped away the tape on PLs and Madhus mouths and demanded to know what happened.

Ahem and Urmila stood at the top and looked in. As Gaura tried to climb out, Ahem mocked at Gaura "Oh don't you worry, you will have plenty of time to hear the stories they have to tell. What was it you called me? A Duffor? How do you feel now that you have been outwitted by people you claimed were stupid? We will make sure you suffer the same kind of terror you put Gopi through" Meera told me how terrified you were of fire. He struck a match and Gaura backed away from the ladder. Should I throw the match in? Gaura screamed at Ahem. I will get you!

"Don't you understand, you will never be able to touch us. Not now, not ever. You were confident that you could turn us against Gopi by convincing us that she was mad. I may have been stupid and blind before, but I have learnt that Gopi never does anything without a reason, and what's more, she would NEVER ever hurt the family. You underestimated the love the family had for her and that was your biggest mistake. Gopi was never, and will never, be alone". Urmila said to Ahem, "Ahem, we don't have to waste time on them anymore. She called out to the 3 captives, "We will leave you here to bond for a while. We have all the proof we need to put you behind bars but we feel that that is letting you off too easy. So for now, we will leave you with these friends. "Papa asked us to catch these specially for you" said Tolu as he and Molu dropped a bag full of fat cockroaches down into the tank. Gaura jumped onto the lap of Madhu, as the bag split open and hundreds of roaches landed at their feet. Madhu was now having problems breathing because of Gauras weight on her. The chair too felt like it was going to break. PL was nearly having a heartattack. "Have you ever experienced snow", she asked them. "Well, it certainly does not feel like this", she said, doing her best imitation of PLs laugh while she dropped an unlocked cage of many small mice down into the tank. The 3 women inside started screaming for help. Roaches and mice were crawling over their bodies. They started pleading for mercy, promising that they will not harm anyone anymore. The pleas fell on deaf ears. "I would suggest you don't scream so much. These roaches, they can go into your mouths and lay eggs in your body" she warned. They got off the tank and looked around at each other, heaving a sigh of relief. Now, let's hope this is the end of it. Even if they come out of there, people will just think that they are lunatics. The family laughed and walked away towards the house.

Urmila called Meera and gave them a blow by blow account of what transpired and they all burst out laughing. "How will you explain to Shravan and Dharam about Gaura" she asked Meera, who looked at Vidya and shrugged. We have the videos to prove that Gaura is a scumbag. Whether they choose to believe it or not, that's their choice entirely. Anyway, nothing else matters now. We want to see Daadi, Mom and Dad so please tell them that we are coming over now.

Meera and Vidya arrived a while later and saw their family happily chatting away. They ran to their Daadi and hugged her tightly. Meera apologized to Kokila and promised she would never misbehave anymore. She walked to her mother, put her arms around her, and told Kokila, "We have also made up Daadi. I will never hurt anyone in my family anymore especially Mom and Dad. Kokila smiled and gave her a kiss. I am happy that my family is all together now.

They chatted way into the night and then one by one as they got tired, each of them went to bed.

Gopi and Ahem hugged Kokila one more time before going up to their room. Meera and Vidya, said they would be staying here for a while. Ahem turned and said to them with a wink, "As long as you are not sleeping in our room, you can stay as long as you want. The girls laughed and told Ahem. "We understand that you want some quality time with Mom, right?" This time Ahem didn't miss a beat. He answered "Of course! So, make sure you do not disturb us". He laughed and walked on to his room. Kokila said they could sleep with her. As she turned out the lights, she looked around the house, taking in the sights and sounds.

In the Gohem room, Ahem threw away the restraints as they were no longer needed. They both changed and got into bed. Ahem put his arms around her and pulled her close. She buried her face in his chest. "I really didn't know what to do seeing you like that, all violent and angry. It was scary", said Ahem quietly as he ran his hand down her back. She joked, "Next time you make me angry, I will take on that form then. It is not often you see Ahem Modi scared"

I am so glad you did not do this to me in the first year of our marriage. "Hmm, what would you have done if I did?" He laughed and tightened his arms around her. "I would have thrown you to the mental institution, no questions asked. "Ouch!" as Gopi mock punched him on his chest. "My wife is turning violent. I should be careful". As he held her, he felt a lump form in his throat and tears well up in his eyes. He thought of all the times he wasted in his marriage being angry at Gopi. He pulled her closer and kissed her forehead and waited till the lump in his throat subsided. He lifted her chin and made her look at him. "Gopi, I know that I have not been the best husband or friend but I will keep on trying and improving myself, to be the husband that you deserve. I know I have broken many many promises to you but please don't, for one second, think that I could ever be with anyone else but you. I won't make any promises to you as they are only words, and words can always be broken. From now on, I will let my actions do the talking. I will make you proud to be the wife of Ahem Modi." Gopi was touched by his speech. She couldn't find the right words to express her love for him so she kept silent. She hugged him tight. Now, she finally felt like they truly understood each other. After a while, they fell asleep dreaming good dreams.
