The colour of a person's skin has nothing to do with depression.
Gopi's father is quite dark and as one person stated genes has a lot to do with a person's skin colour.

My father was fair but my mother was dark but not very dark.

My brothers were all dark and one of them was very very dark yet my sister and I are fair.
I have never seen my grand parents except for my maternal grand mother and she had brown colouring. I vaguely remember her since she died when I was very young and not yet at school.

Vidya has her maternal grand father colouring. lots of viewers think that Vidya looks like Kokila , there is a resemblance but she also looks like Gopi.
Vidya is very outspoken and believes in truth. She is brave and can verbally defend herself and her mum. She is a very clever little girl who listens and thinks before responding.

Meera looks more like Ahem

@bold. Similar what you are describing there is a phenomenon of pregnancy. In some women, especially Asian decent, the acquire what is called a pregnancy mask. The skin on the face becomes darker but soon disappears after childbirth. It is not depression or outside interference, just a quirk of pregnancy. But it can affect a woman's confidence at such a delicate time.

Skin complexion is a lot more complicated than just pining it down to 1 gene. It is the interaction of different proteins and the genes that contribute to skin pigmentation. Before Gopi's egg was fertilized, there was a recombination of Ahem's genes from both his parents and he passed down half of it. Perhaps much of the genes contributing to skin colour passed down from Kokila's lineage. In any cases, the combination of half of Gopi's genes and Ahem's genes could produce children of varying skin tones. It's estimated thousand of genes contribute to skin pigments. Chances are you and your siblings do not exactly look alike. Add to that- environmental factor. Some are more or less affected by the environment.
