Hey
--------------------------------------------------
Scene 1:
Ahem stood near the cupboard, trying to find the handkerchief lying right in front of his eyes. Only he knew that he was listening with baited breath for the sound of her payals... Waiting and listening... It had been over an hour since he returned home and he hadn't seen her yet. Some one had come with the tea and he had asked them to place it on the table. He didn't even remember who it was...
Who cares? Where is she?
That's when he heard her ... the clinking of her payals and bangles as she walked slowly... He had been playing this game with himself for the past few months where he would try to guess if she was carrying something as she came up because the weight of the stuff would affect the sound she made while walking... Today she was definitely carrying some clothes or something... Not sarees, something heavier... He looked at the watch... It was 8:00pm , he looked at the bed... Bed covers... She is going to change them.
He turned back to look at the cupboard as she finally walked in, He pretended to search and waited for her to ask him what he wanted... 10 seconds, nothing.
20 seconds... Nothing.
He looked around and was shocked that she wasn't standing there waiting for him to look at her. She had walked right past and was already in the process of changing the bedding. Her eyes lowered, not a single expression on her face. Ahem felt his breathing hitch... a weird kind of knot forming in his chest... This was worse than torture... She was going to kill him... He knew it...
"Gopi... woh..."
She didn't look up, she didn't stop her work... She didn't even say "Hmm"... She merely tilted her head slightly in his direction and continued.
Ahem felt something snap inside him... Too much... Too much...
"Gopi... Are you listening to me? I am talking to you... "
Gopi stopped her work now and turned her body towards him, didn't look at him... And still not a single sound had escaped her lips...
Ahem pursed his lips.. This was going to be difficult.
"I am searching for my handkerchief... Where have you kept it... " his voice soaked in frustration
Gopi dropped the blanket she was still holding and walked towards the cupboard. She stopped a few steps away from Ahem, her eyes still on he floor... waiting for him to step back and allow her to pick up the handkerchief... When Ahem didn't move, she went around him and opened the other cupboard and picked out a different handkerchief.
Ahem knew this had to end. I don't care how I do it... She must talk to me... At least look at me.
"Gopi... What the hell is wrong with you? Why are you doing this?"
She remained silent her hand stretched out, holding out the handkerchief. Still not looking at him. Ahem waited for her to answer and looked at her hand. He snatched the handkerchief and threw it across the room, taking a step towards her as he did. She backed away instantly...
"Gopi... Stop it! Stop it immediately... I know I made a mistake... but that doesn't mean you will behave like this... Today morning, I went to the office and you didn't give me my tea, my breakfast... I came back and you didn't even come and ask for me... Is your Maaji still not well... Or is it someone else who is sick? And now one hour after I have come and you aren't even looking at me... Fine, I made a mistake... Happy? But you... You aren't even letting me apologize to you... Seriously Gopi... "
Ahem stopped mid sentence as he felt her facial expression change. She took a deep breath and turned away from him... Walking towards the door. Ahem was stunned for the initial few seconds... Is she really walking away?
It took Ahem a few seconds to overcome the shock he had just felt... Gopi had nearly reached the door when she heard Ahem's booming voice.
"GOPI!! "
Gopi stopped... Ahem was again surprised that she didn't shiver at his loud call... What has happened? What did I do?
"Gopi! Where the hell do you think you are going? I am talking to you..."
That's when Gopi turned to look at him... For the first time in nearly 24 hours, her eyes looking directly into his. Her face expressionless, but those eyes giving away a multitude of emotions that hit Ahem all at once... Drowning him, suffocating him... Ahem's breath caught as he saw her face... Something is seriously wrong...
"Gopi... you... "Ahem murmured his voice barely a whisper... Ahem was scared of something... An ominous feeling coming over him as he sensed that something really bad was going to happen... The first time in his life had he felt like this...
"I am going to call Anitaben... After all she understands you much better than me... Right?"
With that she turned away from him and left the room... And Ahem felt his entire world spin, he felt himself fall on his right and bang against the cupboard as the force of her words engulfed him... He closed his eyes and tried to breath... Failing he looked back at the open door, checking if she had really gone...
