Chapter 3

When aham and jigar entered the room, they found rashi and gopi in middle of a heated discussion with komal trying to pacify them. It was really unusual as they both never argue over anything. The moment rashi spotted jigar she moved towards him with a complaining voice:

Just the person I want. Jigar try to bring some sense into this girl.

Jigar was mystified: what is the problem rashi? Why are you fighting with gopi?

Rashi: jigar, she refuses to come to the engagement hall. She says it is enough that she is here and does not want to bring bad luck

Gopi interfered: rashi try to understand. Is it not enough I m here. I will stay in this room. Please don't force me. Both your engagement is something I have been dreaming off for a long time. I don't want anything to spoil it. Please

Jigar: what nonsense are you talking gopi. If there is someone who wished to see us together then it is you. Our celebration will not be complete without you. So don't make any fuss and start to get ready.

Gopi: jigar try to understand. Why are you behaving like her? I should not come there. I don't want my presence to create a shadow on your happiness

Jigar was extremely angry: enough gopi. One more word. You are finished. I will call off the whole engagement if you don't come down. I give you 15 min. get ready and come down.

Seeing her tears rashi went and hugged her saying: pagli, did you for a minute think you will miss our engagement or marriage. Without you nothing will happen. So be a good girl and get ready.

All the while aham stood rooted to his spot observing them. For the first time he felt like an outsider. There was a key part missing to this puzzle. His mind was processing the whole happening. He could not understand the reason behind gopi's refusal to attend the ceremony or jigar and rashi's threat to her. He realized that something had happened while he was away in the US for three years. He silently watched gopi trying to smile and the rest of the leave the room. He went and stood near the banister watching the preparations going on below, waiting for gopi to come out.

His patience was rewarded when she came out in 15 mins. She wore a pale blur lehenga choli with simple accessories. Aham always knew gopi had simple tastes still she looked beautiful. She stared at him and proceeded to move downstairs. It was then that aham noticed that she had she had not tied the knot of her choli properly. He called her: gopi

Gopi stopped in her track. It was really painful for her to see him so near yet so far from her reach. The way he called her name was like a caress. Not wanting to go towards those thoughts and not wanting to be with him, she started to move. But her seconds of hesitation gave him the chance to move closer. He moved near her saying: gopi, did you check properly in the mirror before you came out.

Gopi looked at him questioningly: woh, your choli ……… knot………….

Gopi touched her back to find the knots lose. As she tried to knot it, she found aham pull her behind a pillar saying: let me.

Just as she felt his fingers on her back, tying the knot, her mind raced to the incident which have a few years back………….

It was a birthday party of one of their friends at their college. It was decided that rashi and gopi will join a couple of friends in their car as it will be easier to travel. On reaching the venue, the girls scrambled out. Gopi found her dupatta a bit lose and told rashi to proceed and she will follow soon. She corrected herself and got out. In her eagerness or miscalculaion she shut the door with the dupatta. The car was auto locked and she was stuck with her dupatta to the door. She tried to pull it only to find a small tear starting to form. She tried calling rashi, but found her not reachable. While she was desperately trying to find a way to get out of the fuss, she found aham walking towards her. He nearly laughed seeing her stuck like that. When she threatened him, he smiled and took a pin from her head and tried to open the door. It was standing there, near the car, with her dupatta stuck, aham and gopi for the first time realized their attraction for each other might me more than that. Day after day for nearly two years they had sat opposite to each other, not talking a word, day after day they had talk, joked and more often fought with each other. But it was the first time; their proximity did something to their thinking process. They could not move their eyes from each other. For the first time, aham touched her cheeks to pin the fluttering curl which was disturbing each other. It was the first time they realized that they were in love with each other. Before aham could succeed rashi came in search of gopi and freed her. And for the first time gopi hated rashi's timing. She would have liked to stand there a day with aham close to her, feeling his touch, looking into his brown eyes, smeeling his fragrance. From that day gopi felt a change in aham. Those secret eyelocks, that special smile reserved for her, used to send butterflies in her stomach. She had hoped that he felt the same way about her. But fate had planned its own drama which resulted in breaking her heart into million pieces.

Gopi was brought to the present by a low whisper at her: gopi look at me

Reluctantly turned to face him. The pain and frustration she saw in his face pulled her heart. And the truth that she was the main reason for it was not comforting.

Aham: gopi please tell me what is happening. Tell me why left me while all I wanted was to be with you. Please

He held her chin with his hand bringing her eyes to meet his: something happened on that day. Jigar refused to say anything. But don't you think I have the right to know. Tell me the truth. Please

All gopi could do was silently stare at him with tears in her eyes. His pleading was breaking her heart further and all the words she had planned to speak with him if she met him, stuck in her throat. As if by miracle, gopi heard her name being called rushed away from him. Aham was lost looking at her. Unknown to them their interaction was noticed by jigar who was not pleased with it. He decided to talk with aham that night itself before the situation turned out of control.

For the rest of the day, gopi succeeded from hiding from aham. His voice, his expression and his mere touch had roused all those buried emotions in her. But hiding from him proved to be difficult. Were ever she went she felt his eyes bore on her. She avoided looking at him which was the most difficult thing she tried to do. Soon the engagement was over. Thing slowly got wrapped up. Only a few people from the groom side and bride's side were left. Gopi was busy helping komal with the presents given to the guests when she felt one of rashi's cousins pull her. She was excitedly saying about her dadi calling her. When gopi reached the place she found all the youngsters surrounding the old lady. She was palm reading for rashi. Gopi also noticed those glanced the girls threw at aham who was standing there with jigar watch dadi's prediction. She did not like the attention aham was getting. She heaved a sigh to steady herself and concentrate on the next thing available. It seemed that Rashi had sent for gopi so that dadi will reach her palm and predict her future. Gopi was reluctant. What was there to know about her future? She already knew her future was going to be bleak. But everyone forced her.

After looking at her palm for a few minutes dadi said: beta, you have suffered terribly for the fast few years. You have even resigned to your fate that your life will be miserable. But your future will be different. All your sufferings have come to an end. Your life from now will be filled with happiness. But there are still some obstacles. But the day when you meet your true love is not far off.

Gopi gave her a polite smile. She had reached that point of life were nothing matters even if it is positive or negative. It was rashi who was having a big smile on her face.

The next evening gopi found herself being dragged to the mall with rashi. Rashi had given the reason that she urgently wanted to meet jigar on something important which could not be discussed at home. On reaching the mall rashi found an uncrowded corner for gopi and told her to wait till she came back. She did not even give time for gopi to protest before she disappeared in the crowd. Nearly 10 mins later she found someone sit opposite to her and found herself staring at aham. For a few seconds she forget to breathe. Slowly it dawned on her that it was rashi's trick. She was cursing rashi in her mind. she did not know why but felt aham was a bit confident in his look as if he had decided something. What can it be?

Rashi was not pleased with this. She did not like to see gopi suffer again. But jigar had called her that morning and told her his plan and convinced her to bring gopi to meet aham. Still rashi was not happy

Rahi: jigar are you sure this will not backfire. I don't want to see both of them suffer for what happened in the past.

Jigar: don't worry rashi. Everything will be okay. As a matter of fact I broke my promise to gopi yesterday

Rashi was shocked: no you did not. Did you tell him everything? But why

Jigar: I felt that he had the right to know. What is the use of hiding certain things only to build more misunderstanding? One day they have to face it, why not now?

Rashi: what did he say?

After reaching their guest house jigar took aham to the terrace. He had been planning it for some time. After seeing aham trying to catch gopi's attention and her reluctance, he decided to clear the situation.

Jigar: aham I want to know whether you really love gopi

Aham: what kind of a question is this jigar?

Jigar: aham I want you say certain thing to you today. But first I want to know what you feel for gopi. I know that you loved her, but what about the present?

Aham: for me and gopi it was not love at first sight. You know how much we fought with each other at college. But slowly we understood each other. Those trips babysitting for you and rashi brought us close. But we never expressed ourselves to each other. After she left, I did not know why. You and rashi were not helpful. Still I loved her and all those times I spent with her are fresh in my memories. I came here to meet her and know why she left me? Why she did not try to meet me? Even now I love her. But I feel something has change. I can't place my hand but I feel gopi is not the same old gopi whom I fell in love with.

Jigar: so if you love gopi why did you propose to antia?

Aha: propose to anita? What nonsense is it jigar. I never did that. Anita……… oh god I barely tolerated her and her obnoxious ways to get me.

Jigar: aham remember the party on the last day of our college. On the stage you proposed to anita. Have you forgotten about it?

Aham: what that? It was not for real. It was a prank. I lost a game which was played. So I was asked to do something. It was in the paper they gave me that I had to propose to a girl in a red dress. Anita was the one. So I did it. But why did you thing it was for real?

Jigar: I knew the truth aham. I was with you. But gopi did not know. Imagine. she came that day to tell her love for you during the party. When she reached the room. She finds everyone surrounding you and anita. You were proposing to anita with a red rose and she was blushing

Aham:nooo

Jigar: yes, it was how she saw the whole thing. It broke her heart to see that you never loved her. She did not want to stay and face more humiliations. So she left from there and from all our lives

Aham: oh god jigar and never knew about this. I thought she did not love me and did not want to face me, so she left. I want to talk with gopi. Now. Come let us go.

Jigar: calm down aham. You just heard one part of the story. There is more.

Aham: what?

Jigar: what you said is right. Gopi is not the same old gopi. After leaving everything she loved behind, she suffered a lot. She had no one to turn when it was most needed. And I don't know how you will cope with it.

Aham: jigar tell me what happened to gopi?

Jigar: gopi is a divorcee.

Hope you all like it. It is one part of the mystery revealed. So now what will aham do? Will he accept gopi? What about gopi? is she ready for a second life?
