Part 3
"Anita! You? Here?" He asked sharply.
Before Ahem finished asking the question the whole family had gathered in the hall with varying expressions of shock. Koki came forward.
"Ahem, I invited Anita here." She said surprising everyone. Koki's words hit Ahem and Gopi the hardest.
Ahem looked at his mom sharply and wondered why his mom invited Anita to their house knowing his and Anita's history.
Gopi was numb with shock. Her mind refused to accept the fact that her own maji would do this to her. And if Anitaji is married now, then why is she here to stay?
Koki could see the confusion on her son and vahu's face and explained further.
"Anita's marriage did not take place last night. It was due to the fact that Nilesh's grandmother saw Anita in another man's arms before the wedding."
She looked straight at Ahem while she said this.
Ahem cursed his luck silently. Why is this happening just when he is ready to move on with his life?
Gopi felt another blow to her heart and wondered how she was still alive when she felt that her heart was dead from all the beating it has taken lately.
Kokila felt her throat clog with unshed tears when she saw Gopi's hurt look. She knew by inviting Anita into MM she is causing her more pain but things were beyond her control for now.
"I asked Anita to come stay with us until we find a suitable groom for her. She has no family here so she stayed with her friend last night, but starting today she will stay with us."
Gopi glanced at her Ahemji and the look of regret and sadness on his face made her look away from him quickly. May be now he has a chance to be with his love. Anitaji is free again. She wondered if her Ahemji also would want to be free? No matter what has happened in the last few months the fact remains that she was never his choice and never will be.
The one time he had gotten her out of his life he was forced to bring her back then maji had refused to let her leave again forcing him to accept her. He has never indicated he has accepted her as his wife. For some reason he had felt sorry for her and helped her learn to read and write. He had felt responsible for her injuries and took care of her during her recovery but not once did he show her that his feelings towards her have changed.
What about Holi Gopi? Her conscious taunted her. What about Holi? She fired back silently. The moments that he doesn't remember or does not want to remember don't matter. Even if he had started to like her a little the moment Anitaji was in front of him he forgot everything. Will she ever learn to not hope for so much?
Gopi was so lost in her own pain and shattered dreams that she did not even notice the worried looks that were sent her way by Kokila and Ahem.
Ahem did not know how to stop things from going bad to worse. Gopi was not looking at anyone and he could not decipher the fleeting expressions on her face. He turned to his mom.
"Mom I am going to office. Jai Shree Krishna."
He gave Gopi one more glance before leaving. He knew he was running away but he needed time to figures out how to keep Gopi from getting more hurt than she is already hurting.
Rashi happily escorted Anita to the guest room. Once they were in the room Rashi showed her everything then started to put her next plan in motion. Kanaji was showering her with his blessings. Having Anita in the house gives her more opportunity to torture Gopi gawar. Things couldn't be anymore perfect if she and her mom had planned this through some kalakaris. She hesitated and schooled her expression to look sympathetic.
"Anitaji I am sorry about what happened to you last night. It was not right what happened and it was not right what happened to you year and a half ago."
She made sure Anita would consider her a friend and not an enemy.
Anita studied the girl in front of her and wondered if she would be someone she could rely on.
"I understand what you are saying about last night but what do you mean by your comment about a year and a half ago?"
Rashi knew she had hit the right note.
"I am talking about Ahemjiju leaving you to marry my cousin because kakiji made him."
Anita inhaled sharply. "How do you know about Ahem and me?" she asked Rashi.
Anita will decide on whether to believe Rashi or not later but she needed to know about Ahem's married life and this girl looked like she would spill secrets if it was to her advantage.
Rashi went to close the door and moved to where Anita was standing.
"I know about you and Ahemjiju through the letter that came for Gopi before her marriage to Ahemjiju. I don't know who the letter was from but it said that Ahemjiju did not want to marry Gopi because he loved you."
Anita was shocked to hear this and wondered if Ahem had tried to tell the girl he was going to marry about them. "How do you know what was written in the letter?"
Rashi wanted to clap in excitement. She knew Anita has her own reasons for being in Modi Bhavan and she knew it had to do with trying to win Ahemjiju again and may be take revenge on kagdi also. Things were getting better and better.
"Gopi didn't know how to read and write so I read the letter to her."
Anita became thoughtful at this. She decided to find out more about Ahem's wife.
"She still married Ahem knowing he loved someone else?" she asked Rashi.
Anita didn't know why Ahem was still with a girl that did not match him at all. May be its time Ahem learned to stand up to his mom and live his own life and she can do this for him. She realized that she still loved Ahem. Fate was giving her a second chance to win him back and she is going to do all she can to do just this.
Rashi made a sad face. "Yes she still married him. My mom and I tried to talk her out of the marriage but she didn't listen to us. Once she saw that she was marrying into a rich family she did not let anything get in the way of marrying him."
Anita frowned; it was hard to believe that the timid and innocent looking girl was so greedy.
"Are you saying she only married him for his money? She is that greedy and conniving?"
Rashi nodded her head. "Yes this is what I am saying. You can ask Kinjalben about this. Ask her what happened after my cousin married Ahemjiju and why he has never accepted her as his wife."
Anita had suspected that Ahem was not happy with his marriage but it looked like he still hasn't accepted his wife so he must still have feeling for her.
"Where is Kinjal and how can I get in touch with her?" she asked Rashi.
Rashi could not believe how everything was falling into place. Kinjalben would finish what she can't do. She couldn't wait to call her mother and tell her to bring Kinjal to Modi Bhavan as soon as possible.
"Kinjalben is married to my cousin. I will tell her to come visit you today if you want."
Anita wanted to put her plan in motion as soon as possible so she nodded her head.
"Yes please call her and tell her to come see me."
Anita watched as Rashi walked out of the room and closed the door. She had been surprised when Ahem's mom had come forward and offered her help. Anita had known the real reason for the help but kept quiet. And now she was here at Modi Bhavan close to her love, taking a chance to see if she can have him back again.
That evening Ahem returned home and his eyes immediately darted from one place to another looking for Gopi. He had thought about her all day and how to best protect her from further pain. He decided it is best to keep Anita away from Gopi as much as possible. It is impossible to keep her from seeing Anita but it would be best if they did not interact with one another. He did not want Anita to say anything to Gopi that would bring back the memories of the past year. When Ahem did not see Gopi he decided to head straight to his room and hoped that she would bring him his tea.
If Ahem had turned his head slightly towards the kitchen when he first came he would have noticed Gopi watching him and then retreated into the kitchen when she saw him looking around the house. Gopi did not think Ahem was looking for her. She thought he might have been looking for Anitaji so she retreated to kitchen to make his tea.
Gopi was just going out of the kitchen to take her Ahemji's tea to him when Rashi and Anita came towards her. Rashi stopped her.
"Gopi can you please help me make Jigarji's favorite dish?" Gopi nodded her head.
"Okay Rashiben let me just take Ahemji's tea up and I will come help you."
Rashi thought quickly. "Why don't you give the tea to Anitaji, she will take it up to him. She has some important work she needs to ask Ahemjiju about. You help me before kakji comes down so she doesn't yell at me for not knowing how to make Jigarji's favorite dish."
Gopi thought about it for a moment then nodded her head. Anita was impressed by Rashi's manipulation skills and smirked at her. She took the teacup from Gopi.
"Thank you Gopi. Ahem and I need to catch up on old times and this will give me a perfect excuse to see him. You are a very understanding wife, I am sure Ahem will thank you for giving us this time."
Gopi nodded her head and gave her a tiny smile before going back in the kitchen. Rashi followed her after giving Anita thumbs up. She joined Gopi at the stove.
"Gopi do you think Anitaji and Ahemji still have feelings for each other?" Rashi asked digging the knife in deeper.
Gopi did not answer Rashi, she knew her cousin was trying to hurt her back for what she said to her regarding the family split incident.
"Rashiben, what did you want to make for devarji?"
Rashi wanted to say more but stopped when she heard Hetal and Koki come towards the kitchen.
"Never mind now Gopi, I don't want to hear kakiji scold me. We will make it some other time." She left the kitchen quickly.
Ahem was working on his current project while he was waiting for Gopi to bring him his tea. He looked up at the knock on the door and was surprised to see Anita standing by the door with his tea instead of Gopi.
"Anita why did you bring the tea? Gopi could have brought it up." He said to her wondering why Anita had come to his room when Gopi was not present.
Anita smiled at Ahem and sauntered in the room as if she owned it.
"She was busy with her kitchen work so I told her I would bring it so that I would have a chance to catch up with you."
Ahem firmed his mouth. He did not like the sound of that and what kind of meaning Gopi would have gotten from it.
"I am sorry Anita I don't have time to catch up right now. I am working on a presentation that I need to finish by tonight," he said dejectedly as he turned back to his laptop.
Anita sat in on the armrest of his chair and it made him uncomfortable but he did not say anything.
"You still haven't changed Ahem. You still work too hard. I always had to force you to have fun. Come on take a break and talk with me." She tried to cajole him.
Ahem turned his head. "I have changed Anita, I am not like I used to be. I have learned few lessons in the past year and half. I know what is important and what is not. Now please let me get to my work."
He returned his attention to work. He relaxed when she left when she realized he was not going to give up on his work. He got up and closed the door.
It was late at night and Gopi still hadn't come to the room. Ahem continued to work on his project while he waited for Gopi. He was about to give up and go look for her when she came in the room. She looked exhausted; Ahem wanted to tell her to take care of herself and not work so hard but he knew she would probably not listen to him. All through dinner she had kept quiet while the family talked to Anita and asked her about her likes and dislikes.
He glanced at his mom when it was mentioned that Kinjal had come to see Anita today, but his mom was not looking at him she was watching Gopi with worry on her face. When he saw Gopi retreat to the kitchen he hoped that Kinjal hadn't said something to Gopi to make her think he was still in love with Anita and wanted to be with her.
Ahem was so lost in his thoughts he did not realize that Gopi had changed clothes and was now lying on the bed on her side with her back to him. He wanted to call out to her and say something to reassure her but stopped himself. She had looked more tired tonight then the previous night and knew she must not have had restless night like him.
Half-hour later he heard a knock on the door. Ahem wanted to shout at the person for knocking on the door loud enough to wake the whole house. He hoped Gopi was not disturbed but that was too much to hope for when he saw her sit up on the bed. Ahem opened the door to see Anita on the other side.
"What's wrong Anita?" he asked with a frown.
Anita was glad it was Ahem who opened the door and not his wife. She glanced over his shoulder and saw his wife sitting on the bed watching them.
"I am sorry to disturb you Ahem but I saw the lights on in your room and took a chance. I have a headache and I am unable to sleep and wondered if I can get some medication for it."
Ahem heard Gopi get up from the bed and turned to her. "Gopi you go to sleep I will go get medicine for Anita from downstairs."
He started to go out but stopped when she said his name.
"Ahemji it's okay I can go get it, you go ahead and do your work."
Ahem turned to her and gave her a stern look, and he spoke firmly, "I said I will go get the medicine, you rest."
Gopi retreated. "Ji."
When Ahem saw her settle back on the bed he turned towards Anita.
"I will go get you something for your headache."
Anita decided this was another opportunity to spend time with Ahem and remind him how good they had been together and decided to join him.
"I will come with you so your wife can rest." He didn't argue so she followed him down.
Gopi closed her eyes as the silent tears flowed down her cheek. She had wondered if Ahemji still had feelings for Anitaji and now she had her answer. Hey kanaji please show me the right path to take so that I can bring back Ahemji his happiness. Please give me strength to let him go when he asks me to free him. Gopi hoped her kanaji shows her the way and gives her strength to leave not only Ahemji but the family also, when the time comes for her to leave.
Two days later Ahem came home tired and frustrated with everyone and everything. Nothing had gone right since the morning he first ran into Anita. Things had gone from bad to worse between him and Gopi. She was avoiding him like a plague and he was tired of it. Today he decided he would sit her down and get everything out in the open so there are no misunderstandings between them.
Ahem was determined to have it out with Gopi today. He thought he was being sensitive by shielding her from his past but his protection of her was taking her further away from him. He realized he was giving her wrong signals by keeping Anita away from her.
For the past two days he had hardly seen her, on the other hand Anita has turned up everywhere. She had even showed up at his office at lunchtime.
First he needed to talk to his mom. This has gone far enough. He was sorry Anita's marriage broke and he was partly responsible for it but that is all he felt. He has moved on with his life and his past needs to move on also. Only thing he owed Anita is apology for the way he broke up with her in the past and for the part he played in breakup of her marriage but that's it. He owes her nothing else apart from that. His present and future is Gopi only.
As soon as he walked in the house he headed for kitchen to look for Gopi. Today he only wanted tea made by her and no one else. And he only wants her to bring it to their room. He stopped when he heard Rashi talking to Gopi. He glanced in the room and was not surprised to see Gopi working and Rashi as usual running her mouth more than working. He waited to see why Rashi was smirking at Gopi.
"Gopi do you remember what I said to you last week after Baa decided to call off the split?"
Ahem didn't like the smug tone of Rashi's voice and waited to hear more.
"Remember I told you that we will talk when you know how it feels to be insecure when someone or something you love is being taken away from you or you lose it to someone else?"
Ahem inhaled sharply but did not interrupt Rashi, he wanted to see how far Rashi would go.
"So Gopi now tell me how does it feel to see Ahemjiju moving away from you and into the arms of his first and only love?"
Ahem was about to step in and blast Rashi but Gopi's soft reply stopped him.
"Rashiben I have no fear of losing something that was never mine to begin with. Just because I love Ahemji does not mean that he is required to love me back. I have always known that Ahemji only loves Anitaji."
Ahem couldn't move to save his life after hearing Gopi's reply. He realized how far things have really gotten to, no wonder Gopi was moving away from him. She thinks he still loves Anita. "Why wouldn't she Ahem? You are the one who told her that you would only love Anita. You haven't told Gopi that you only love her now. Ahem tuned back into the conversation when he heard Gopi speak again.
"Rashiben I may not have gotten my love but you are destroying your love with your own hands if you don't recognize how much devarji loves you. I beg you to concentrate on your own relationship and leave me to mine."
Ahem was seething with anger.
"Ahem," he turned towards his kakiji, "when did you come home?" He took few steps back.
"Kakiji I just came home and was just going to ask Gopi to bring me my tea to our room." His kaki smiled at him.
"Theek hai beta, you go and freshen up I will send Gopi up with your tea."
His kaki went past him to the kitchen and Ahem went upstairs to freshen up and change clothes. When he walked in the room he saw that Gopi had already laid his clothes out for the evening. He dropped his laptop bag on the table and took the clothes into the bathroom to change.
Twenty minutes later he came out and walked over to the bedside table for a file when his eyes landed on the picture of him and Gopi on Holi. He took the picture in his hand and gently caressed Gopi's smile with his thumb. She looked so happy on that day. Suddenly Ahem saw himself chasing Gopi with colors in his hands and they were in their room and in his excitement of coloring her he ran right to her, taking her with him, as they fell on the bed together. The picture in his mind disappeared as fast as it had appeared. He blinked to bring the room back in focus. He put the picture down and turned towards the door when he heard the clanking of bangles.
Gopi walked in the room to see Ahem standing by the bed staring at her with unreadable expression on his face. She put his tea on the table.
"Ahemji your green tea. Dinner will be ready in half hour."
She turned to go when he didn't say anything.
Ahem realized why Gopi had withdrawn from him after Holi.
"Gopi ... wait."
She stopped and turned towards him. He moved to stand in front of her and smiled down at her.
"After dinner I need to talk to you about something very important. Please come back to the room as soon as you finish with your work."
She nodded, turned and left the room without saying anything else. Ahem decided to talk to his mom right after dinner.
Later that night Ahem went straight to his mom's room once he finished talking to his kaka about the current project. He knocked on the door and entered when his mom told him to go in.
"Mom I need to talk to you about something very important." Koki sat on the bed and patted the place beside her.
"Ahem come sit with me and tell me what it on your mind."
Koki was anxious from the inside but did not show it. She was really worried for her Gopi vahu. She was scared to death of her son's feelings for his ex-girlfriend and was afraid to hear what Ahem wanted to say to her.
Ahem sat next to his mom and got his thoughts in order. He turned to her and took her hand in his.
"Mom I think its time we made arrangements for Anita to go somewhere else. I know you asked Anita to come here because you also feel partly responsible for what happened to her, but I think its best if she stayed somewhere else instead of here."
Kokila was surprised but was also glad her son wanted to send Anita away and not Gopi. She did feel bad for Anita and what happened in the past and now with her marriage also, but she still feels Anita was not the right girl for her son.
"Ahem dikra I know it is difficult for you but where will she go?"
Gopi froze outside of her maji's door when she heard the question. She had been on her way to tell her maji about papaji's message and arrived just as her maji voiced the question. She tried to move away but her feet would not cooperate with her. She felt herself transported back in time and once again found herself in the same exact spot listening to similar conversation between her maji and Ahemji.
Ahem haven't figured out all the details of how and where but he knew he couldn't see Gopi hurt anymore. She has been through so much already.
"Mom I don't know but I don't think I can take it anymore. I didn't say anything all this time because I know you feel responsible for her but now I want to go on with my life and I can't do this while she is here."
Gopi slowly moved back. She heard all that she needed to hear. She had wondered what her Ahemji had wanted to talk to her about earlier but now she knows. She didn't want her Ahemji to be unhappy anymore and didn't want to burden her maji. She decided to leave before they asked her to leave to save her pride. She turned and hurriedly walked to her room and closed the doors. This time there were no tears in her eyes like last time. She had known this day would come when Anitaji's marriage broke. She moved to the wardrobe and pulled out a bag to pack her few articles of clothing and her parent's picture.
Back in Kokila's room Ahem and his mum continued to talk not realizing Gopi has heard them talking and assumed they are talking about her.
"Mom Anita is my past. I no longer have any feelings for her. I want to be with Gopi and start making up for all the past hurt I caused her in the beginning of our marriage. You were right mom Gopi is the right life partner for me. She is perfect."
Koki had tears in her eyes when she heard her son say he wanted to be with her Gopi vahu. Today her son has made her very proud. "Theek hai Ahem dikra I will do as you say, but let's figure out how we can help Anita. She needs our help and I don't want to ask her to leave just like that."
Ahem felt helpless but he knew his mom was right.
"Theek hai mom I will wait but I need to talk to Gopi and clear some things between us. I wanted to ask you one more thing."
Koki put her hand on top of Ahem's. "Tell me what else you want."
Ahem knew he can count on his mom. "Mom I know you don't want me to interfere with household things but please try to keep Rashi away from Gopi until we decide what to do about Anita."
Koki sighed at her son's request. Now she can stop worrying about her innocent vahu, she knew he would take good care of his wife. "You don't worry about Gopi vahu, I will make sure she is safe when you are not here."
Ahem smiled at his mom. "I know you will mom thank you."
Kokila laughed at him. "You don't have to thank me Ahem. You know I love my Gopi vahu and would protect her at any cost."
Ahem spontaneously hugged his mom surprising her. "I know you will mom. Now I am going to talk to her before it's too late."
He walked out of the room in a hurry. He didn't want Gopi to go to sleep before he talks to her.
Ahem froze by the door of his room when he saw Gopi standing by the bed with a open bag in front of her. She had a photo frame in her hands that she was caressing gently.
"Gopi what are you doing?"
Gopi was startled out of her thoughts when Ahemji spoke from behind her. She gently placed her parents' picture in the bag and turned back to the wardrobe to get her clothes.
Ahem was shocked when Gopi didn't answer and just took few saris from the closet and walked towards the bed. Ahem strode to her angrily.
"Gopi answer me, what are you doing?"
Gopi finally looked up at him but her expression was blank.
"Ahemji I have decided to end this suffocating relationship so you could be free to be with the one you love."
Ahem was stunned. "What are you saying Gopi?"
Gopi sighed and hoped she didn't break down until she was outside of Modi Bhavan gate.
"It's simple Ahemji, I don't want to be the cause of yours and Anitaji's unhappiness. I came between you two before and I don't want to do it again. Just because we are married doesn't mean we have to stay married, and I am sure Maji will also agree this time," saying this she turned back to the wardrobe to get rest of her things.
Ahem wondered why people always wanted to make decisions for him and think they know best what makes him happy. He watched as Gopi came back to bed with few more saris and decided this time only he is going to talk and everyone else is going to listen. When she was next to the bed he grabbed the saris out of her arms and threw them on the bed. He grabbed her by both arms and pulled her close to him and spoke in a very controlled tone.
"Gopi I want to tell you something."
