I have seen people like Gopi. They may not be as naive or innocent since in the world of fiction, the characters and situations have to be made larger than life to have maximum effect on the audience, but there are people like that out there. When I was younger, I had heard people talking about our neighbors dil who was beaten by her mil, husband and sil but still did all the work in the house and we never saw her outside. Sometimes, she was starved as a punishment. One of our other neighbors once saw her on her roof and threw some food to her. Eventually, she died and her mil, sil and husband were arrested for her murder. We may think - was she so naive that she stayed in that house thinking her situation may improve. No, she wasn't naive, but she probably had no other way out. But this is an extreme case.
I think I said this in another post that in life, sometimes we may act like Gopi for our own reason. We may do it to keep peace in the family or we feel we owe it another person or we may feel guilty for something else we have done or we may just be helpless or may feel we will not have any support if we didn't do what we are being forced to do. To others it may look like we are being naive or being taken in for a ride, but we know better. We are aware of what is going on but it is easier to pretend innocence or naivete in order to justify what we are doing. I admit I have done such things for my relatives that I didn't want to and I knew I was being taken advantage of, but I had my own reasons. This is the reason I get upset when people call Gopi brainless or spineless or naive. She is very strong and is a peace maker in the family.
I can go on and on about some real stories on this, but I won't bore you all. But these things may not happen to us on such a grand scale as they show in serials. Sometimes, they create a mountain out of molehill in the serials and show the situations in their worst form.
