Part 18

Ahem paced up and down the length of his office, he felt like throwing his phone against the wall. All the hard work, all the preparations to trap the culprit down the drain, the person didn't take the bait. Now on top of that there is news that third party is involved. He went to his desk and stood with his hands on the desk, head bowed, trying to think who it could be.

He stood up straight and rubbed the back of his neck. His Jacket has been discarded long before, his tie was loose, the sleeves of his shirt rolled up. All signs of tension he has been going thru throughout the day. This was not only a professional rivalry, but the person holds a personal grudge also. And now it is obvious that it is more than one person involved. He needed to inform his Kaka and Jigar. He also needed to let his Papa in on this, so he can keep an eye out at home.

First thing he needs to do is increase the security at home, and also someone to keep an eye out for the ladies when they are shopping. He contacted his investigator and also the private security firm he used to make all the arrangements. Once that was done, he began to think on the reports he received from the investigator. In order to find out who this newcomer is he needed to attend the party that one of his colleagues is having the next night.

His tension increased at thought of attending the party. He had to talk Gopi into going with him and the last one he talked her into had been a disaster. He didn't want to put her through the stress of facing those same people again, but it is a real close friend and he will expect Ahem to bring the whole family. While his parents, Kaka, and Kaki will decline to attend, he knows Jigar and Kinjle will accompany them. In addition he will ask Elesh and Raj also. He knows Gopi's friend and her husband will attend, so it won't be so bad.

Ahem grimaced at thought of facing Shruti, but he will have to for Gopi's sake. He never liked Shruti, and only reason for that was she always tried to keep Gopi from him in college. He never understood why she had disliked him so much from the first meeting. He understood that she was trying to protect Gopi, but she never even gave him a chance, and of course what happened later confirmed her beliefs that he was bad for Gopi. He is just going to have to show her that he will never hurt Gopi like that again, and he loved Gopi more than his life.

He picked up his phone and dialed Gopi's number before he could change his mind. He felt a sense of relief as soon as he heard her soft "Hello." He smiled, "Hey sweetheart, where are you?"

Gopi had moved to a more private area as soon she heard Ahem's ring tone. "We are almost finished with Kinjleben's dress and will be heading home soon. What's wrong?" Gopi knew something was wrong no matter how cheerful he tried to sound.

Ahem knew he should have waited to get home and see her instead of talking himself into calling her just to hear her voice. "Nothing is wrong, Jigar and I are about to leave, we will pick you up, tell me where you are at." He waited for her to reply, there was a few seconds of tense silence as if she wanted to say something, but changed her mind. She told him where they could be found. He told her to wait in the store for him he would be there in thirty minutes. He told her bye quickly and hung up before she could ask him anything else.

On the other side Gopi stood there for few moments in tense silence lost in thoughts. Now she knew there was something definitely wrong and she is going to make him tell him later that night. She had been patient long enough, but if he keeps stressing, it's going to affect his health. She went back to Kinjle to finish shopping and to inform her that Ahem was coming to pick them up in thirty minutes.

Thirty minutes later Ahem pulled up in front of the store. He was glad he decided to bring Jigar with him; he had filled Jigar in on what's happening; now they can both talk to Kakaji that evening. Ahem also told Jigar he may need his and Kinjle's help in talking Gopi into going to the party next night.

Jigar gave Ahem are you kidding me look, and Ahem understood even his brother was reluctant to talk her into going after the last disaster. Kinjle will even be worst; she may take Gopi's side in all this. Ahem ran a hand thru his hair tiredly. What a mess! He prayed everything turns out okay.

Kinjle and Gopi were both waiting for them when they walked into the store. Gopi sharp eyes immediately looked at Ahem and concluded that she had been right; something big must have happened for him to look this tensed, he is usually very good at hiding things.

Ahem knew he had been unable to hide his worry from Gopi. He gave her a smile and went towards her. "Please don't start scolding me here; we will talk about it later. I just want to go home for now." He put his arm around her to hug her to his side. She didn't say anything, just nodded her head and let him lead her out the store.

Once they were home Ahem quickly escaped to his room while everyone was discussing the shopping expedition, and inquiring about what was bought. He felt Gopi's eyes on him as he was leaving and knew she would soon follow him. He needed to be prepared to answer her questions. He quickly dropped his things in the chair, took out track pants and T-shirt to change into and went into the bathroom to freshen up.

He was just coming out of the bathroom when Gopi walked in with a cup of green tea. She knew he expected her to start questioning him right away, and she was tempted to but he looked too tired, so she decided to wait until later. She put his tea on the table and waited for him to finish drying his hair. When he was finished she took the towel from him to take back to the bathroom.

When she came out she saw him sitting on the side of the bed, head lowered in tension. She went and stood in front of him. She slowly ran her hand thru his hair, he looked up at her and started to say something but she stopped him by putting her finger on his lips.

She shook her head. "Drink your tea and rest for a while, I will come get you for dinner." She started to move to get him his tea but he stopped her by wrapping his arms around her waist tightly and putting his head on her chest. Gopi wrapped her one arm around him and placed her other hand on back of his head to hold him closely.

After few moments she pulled away from him, gave him a reassuring smile and went get his tea. She sat beside him while he drank his tea, silently offering her support, and this was not missed by Ahem. Finally when he was finished with the tea she took the cup from him and stood up. She placed her one hand on his cheek and smiled. "Get some rest." She leaned down kissed him on the cheek and left before he could say anything.

Ahem lay on the bed, thinking about how to bring up everything in front of the family. He didn't want to cause them worry, especially before Kinjle's engagement, but he needed them to be alert, so he will have to tell them everything. He drifted off to sleep after a while.

When everyone was gathered for dinner, Ahem finally brought up the incidents taking place at Modi industry construction sites. "Kaka, I have something I need to discuss with everyone." At his somber tone, everyone kept quiet and waited for him to continue. Gopi who was sitting beside him was watching him intently. He glanced at her once then turned his attention to rest of the family.

"There have been quiet a few incidents at our company's construction sites in last few months. I've been trying to find out why and how it's happening, and would have caught the person, but they found out we set up trap and didn't take the bait. So now we don't know who it is that's been causing problems by replacing our orders of good quality materials with cheap materials." Everyone stopped eating stunned at Ahem's revelation.

"Ahem dikra, why didn't you tell us all this before?" His kaka was first to break the silence. "Kaka I didn't want to worry you, I thought it was someone just trying to steal from our company but today I found out it's more than that, it is not only a professional grudge, but someone who also wants a revenge personally." Ahem looked around the table and his gaze stopped on Gopi, who was watching him with worried expression.

His papa asked the next question. "Ahem dikra, do you know who it is?" When Ahem shook his head no, his mother in tense voice said, "How will you know who it is? You are not telling us everything."

Ahem told them about how and when the problems started and what has been done about it so far. "As for how will we know, we need to attend a party tomorrow night, that one of my colleagues is throwing." Ahem looked at Gopi to see how she would react to this news. He knew he was playing dirty by bringing up the party in front of the family, but he needed her beside him, and he knew she wouldn't refuse in front of the family.

To his surprise Gopi didn't look mad but worried. He took her hand under the table and squeezed gently. She gave him a faint smile.

"Bhai, how will we know what to or who to look for at the party?" Jigar asked.

Ahem took a deep breath swiping his hand across his face. "I don't really know. All the investigator was able to get out of his source was that I should be there and I will know."

It was really quiet for a moment, and everyone looked worried. "Ahem we won't be attending the party, we have to be over at Mehta's tomorrow, but the four of you go and be careful." Chirag said with concern.

"Ji kakaji, I have also asked Eleshji and Raj to attend with us." Gopi gave him a surprised look, but didn't say anything.

All the men moved to the study to discuss rest of the details while the ladies cleaned up.

Ahem was waiting for Gopi when Jigar walked in the room. "Bhai, can I talked to you about something?"

Ahem looked up in surprise. "Jigar, of course come in and sit down."

Jigar sat in the chair beside Ahem, but now he didn't know where to start. He cleared his throat. "Bhai I don't want to burden you with more problems, but I need your advice."

Ahem looked at his younger brother with a frown and wondered if he had been too standoffish with everyone. "Jigar, don't worry about it. Is this about what I asked you the other day?"

Jigar flushed a little. "Ji Bbai. You and Bhabhi are both right, I do love someone. Things were going great, and we were going to tell the family soon, but recently she started doubting me and thinks I am cheating on her."

"So who is it? Although I do have a clue on who the person might be." Both Ahem and Jigar looked up to see Gopi and Kinjle standing by the door smiling widely. It was Gopi who had asked the question.

Jigar stood up and looked at them nervously. He turned to Ahem, "may be we should talk about this some other time." he started to leave but was blocked by his sister and Bhabhi both. Kinjle took his arm and made him sit in the chair. "I already know it's know its Sonal, kakaji's best friend's daughter. You have been friends for long time and now finally realized it's more than friendship. Now tell Bhabhi what is really wrong."

Jigar glared at his sister. "Since you know everything why don't you tell her?"

Kinjle scowled at him. "At the rate you are going we are never going to get your problem solved. Besides you might be surprised at how simple the solution to your problem is when Bhabhi comes to know about your dilemma."

Gopi was sitting beside Ahem waiting for Jigar and Kinjle to finish. She looked over at Ahem questioningly. He just shrugged his shoulder to let her know he had no clue what it was all about.

Gopi turned to Kinjle. "What makes you think I have the solution to whatever the problem is?"

"Tell her Jigarbhai."

"I should have never shared anything with you." Jigar said to Kinjle who just raised her eyebrow and smiled at him.

Jigar turned to Gopi and Ahem and smiled at the closeness between his Bhai and Bhabhi. Ahem was currently holding Gopi's hand, not letting go when she tried to pull her hand back. "Things were going well between Sonal and me, but about a week ago she started getting disturbing phone calls. Some woman kept calling her and telling her that I was seeing someone else behind her back. At first Sonal didn't believe her, and even asked me and I told her it was not true, I only loved her. She let it go and I thought things were ok, but then she stopped taking my phone calls.

Meanwhile your cousin Rashi started showing up everywhere I went, she even came to the office claiming to visit her brother, but she never visited him for long, somehow she was always around me flirting with me, trying to make it look as if there is something between us. I finally went to see Sonal and she told me she saw me with Rashi and she didn't want to see me anymore. I tried telling her there was nothing between Rashi and me, but she won't believe me." Jigar felt awkward telling his Bhabhi about her cousin.

Ahem only had eyes for Gopi as soon as Rashi was mentioned. He watched the fleeting expressions from surprise to anger, then despair and finally self-blame. The last two made him sit up and make her look at him. "Gopi!" He said sharply to get her attention. "You are not to be blamed for this, do you hear me? Do not blame yourself for this." He felt a twig of pain in his heart when he saw her eyes fill with tears. He knew his Gopi is lot stronger than this, but for some reason when it came to her family, she always lost all the ability to fight, and ended up blaming herself.

Gopi knew deep down in her heart that Ahem is right and she shouldn't blame herself, but she couldn't help herself. "I should have warned him. I knew they wanted to bring her proposal thru me but I refused, and I was happy when I found out that devarji was seeing someone else, I didn't even think about mami and Rashi." Gopi turned towards Jigar and Kinjle who was watching them with astonishment.

Jigar spoke up first. "Bhabhi why are you so disturbed? I am sorry, may be I shouldn't have brought up your cousin. This is why I was going to try to speak to bhai alone. I didn't want to say anything bad about your cousin." He felt bad for making his bhabhi cry.

Gopi laughed bitterly. "No you have it wrong devarji, I do not care for my cousin at all. I should have warned you that they might try to trap you somehow. When they showed up at the mall last time, it was only so Rashi could flirt with you and at the same time impress kakiji somehow, but I never gave her the opportunity."

Jigar understood that his bhabhi and cousin were not close at all, and he never knew this. He sat back, feeling relieved.

Gopi wiped her tears. "Anyways, Kinjleben and I will go talk to Sonal tomorrow, and get everything cleared. Don't worry."

Kinjle rushed over and hugged Gopi. "Didn't I tell you she would have the solution? After all she solved my problem." They all laughed.

Ahem smiled over at Gopi. "And she is still paying for keeping it from me." His smile got wider when he saw her flush.

Kinjle dragged Jigar out of the room. "Ok now that we got that straightened out, we can talk to the parents about getting you engaged as same time as me."

Both Ahem and Gopi smiled at Kinjle's suggestion, while Jigar looked panicked again. They knew Kinjle wouldn't rest now until she has that accomplished.

Ahem got up and closed the door, then turned to Gopi. He took her hands and stood her up in front of him. He put his arms around her waist and looked down at her. "Are you okay?" You have lot to take in tonight, first the party, and now this situation with Rashi."

Gopi put her arms around his neck, and played with his hair at nape of his neck. "I am fine, I am nervous about the party, but you said bhai will be there, and of course Shruti will also be there." She winked at him.

Gopi laughed when Ahem groaned at mention of her friend. "Don't remind me, she can cut me in half with just a look. How can you be friends with her?" He asked her with a frown on his face.

Gopi smoothed his frown with her hand. "She is not bad, she just cares for me a lot, and she was the first friend I made at college, she took me under her wings and showed me the ropes so to speak. Don't worry she will come around. She just needs time to adjust to our relationship. As for Rashi, I am not worried about her, I just hope Sonal understands when I explain everything to her." Gopi said bit anxiously.

Ahem pulled her closer and hugged her, bending and placing his chin on her shoulder. "Don't worry about it right now, I am sure she will listen to you and make the right decision."

Gopi hugged him back and smiled at his optimism. She turned and kissed his neck, moving to his throat, then his chin and finally his lips.

Gopi moved back and looked up at him, they both stared at each other. Everything else seized to exist for them but their feelings for each other. They knew that as long as they were together nothing could hurt them.

Ahem leaned down and Gopi felt her breath go shallow in anticipation. The touch of his strong mouth on hers was tentative at first, then teasing. He enticed her to respond, then gave the gentle reward of damp tongue strokes and tender bites when she did. Gopi's breath caught at each new thing, and she was suddenly helpless to keep from reaching up to wrap her arms around him.

Ahem deepened the kiss when he felt Gopi's arms go around him. He pulled her closer and kissed her until they were both breathless. He pulled back and buried his face in her hair, hugging her to him tightly.

It was a long while before they were both able to release one another and prepare for bed.
