Chapter Five
Sanjeev walked into the office and looked around. He was not in a good mood and it looked like there was a lot of work pending. "Radha please bring me the morning paper." Radha had been Sanjeev's secretary long enough to know when he meant business. She quickly grabbed the paper and dropped it on his desk.
"Can I get you anything else sir?"
"No, just cancel all my meetings for this morning. I have something really important to take care of. Hold all my calls, expect if it's Gopi. I don't want any disruptions do you understand. If you need anything from me ask Rahul. He will take care of it." Radha nodded her head and walked back to her desk. Sanjeev grabbed the paper and read it inch by inch. He had to find out what made Gopi break down like that. What had upset her so much? He couldn't see anything in there that would alarm Gopi. There were some current events, some news about new movies, and news of recent deaths. What could have upset Gopi? He knew he had to make those people pay for every single tear that she had shed in her life. He knew if he asked Gopi about it, it would simply upset her. She had too big of a heart and would never let him do anything against her family. He had to find out about her old life on his own, but how? Where should he start looking? He was pacing back and forth and he could feel the start of a migraine. He buzzed Radha. "Radha can you please bring me some aspirin. I'm getting a headache." He looked at his watch and realized it was already past noon. He had an important meeting in a half hour and he still needed to discuss some details with Rahul before the other representatives came. He grabbed the file from his desk and walked towards Rahul's office.
"Sir, here is your aspirin." Radha handed him the pill and a bottle of water and walked away. Sanjeev walked into Rahul's office to see him busy on the laptop.
"Rahul are all the representatives from the companies coming to the office today to present their proposals for the construction project?"
"Yes Sanjeev sir. They should all be here in about a half hour. Did you get my file about the proposals? I have the strongest contenders for the project highlighted in there. We can discuss and narrow down who our client should be after today's presentation."
"That's excellent Rahul. Good work. This is a really important project for Shah Industries. We have had many contenders for this project as well considering whoever finally gains this project will also profit very nicely. Let's go over some important points of this deal before the meeting." Sanjeev grabbed the file from Rahul's desk and ran through the proposals. His migraine was getting worse, but he knew this was an important meeting he just hoped the aspirin would kick in soon. He rubbed his forehead and continued studying the file. He was so engrossed in the file that he didn't hear the phone ringing.
"Sir the representatives are here. We should get to the conference room." Rahul led the way into the room and Sanjeev took a seat. Hopefully this wouldn't take too long. He wanted to get home and make sure Gopi was okay. She hadn't called all morning and it wasn't like her. The room was full of suits and one by one the companies made their proposals. He knew how important this project was for each and every company there and he needed to be fair about his decision so he needed to focus entirely on their proposals. He glanced at the clock and it was nearly five. He couldn't believe this meeting had taken this long.
"Thank you very much to each and every one of you for your presentations. Mr. Shah and I have a lot to discuss before we make our final decision. We will let you know by the end of next week who we have chosen for this project. Please send us a hard copy of your proposals as we want to compare our notes." Sanjeev looked at Rahul and motioned that he would see him at the house. He wanted to get back home. Rahul could handle the little details. He walked out of his office building towards his car and told the driver to take him home. He needed to make sure Gopi was okay.
Rahul collected the rest of the files from the meeting and walked into his office. He wondered what was wrong with Sanjeev sir. He had been acting weird all morning. He was distracted and Sanjeev sir was never distracted during important meetings. He wondered what could be wrong. Then he thought about Gopi. What is something was wrong with Gopi and that was why Sir was so distracted today? His heart stopped at that thought. He shook it off. It was just a headache. Sir just had a headache. 'Stop being just a pessimist Rahul. Nothing was wrong with Gopi. She was probably at home right now making dinner for Baba and him.' Thinking about Gopi and her beautiful face made him smile. He knew Gopi had gone through a lot of pain before she moved in with Baba and he couldn't understand who would treat his Gopi like that. She was such a kind sweet person who could never hurt a fly. It hadn't taken him long to fall in love with her. She had a good heart, she was caring, and most of all she was so beautiful. Her smile lit up the whole room. Her eyes told her every emotion. He wished he could take her into his arms and make her whole world right again. He would take away all her pain and fill her world with happiness and love. She deserved the best. He looked at the clock and scolded himself. He could get lost forever with thoughts about Gopi, but he needed to get to Sir's house. It was getting late and he had promised Gopi he would stop by tonight to make up for that morning. He quickly grabbed the files from the presentation and threw them into his briefcase. He needed to give those to Sanjeev Sir so he could review them. He turned the lights off in his office and walked out. The drive to Shah Mansion didn't take as long as he expected. The roads were pretty clear and he made record time. He walked to the door and rang the doorbell and waited. He looked up at the sound of the door opening and the image before him took his breath away. It was Gopi dressed in his favorite color. She looked like an angel in white.
"Earth to Rahul! Are you their Rahul? Rahul!" Gopi began waving her hand back and forth trying to gain his attention. Was there something on her face? She rubbed her cheeks to make sure she hadn't gotten anything on them in the kitchen.
"Uh. Woh. Uh. Actually Gopi I wanted to speak to Sanjeev Sir really quick. Is he busy?" Gopi was confused. She let Rahul in and motioned towards the study. First Baba and now Rahul. Something fishy was going on. They were both acting so weird. Baba came home from the office and made sure she was okay before retreating into the study. He hadn't come out of there since then. He even ate his dinner there. Now Rahul comes by and says he needs to speak with Baba. Gopi walked towards they study. She wanted to make sure everything was okay. She knew she had worried Baba this morning with her sudden outburst but the news she saw in the paper was terrible. She knew those people no longer considered her family, but to her they were still special. Each and everyone one of them still held a dear place in her heart and after reading that paper her heart had despaired. She lost someone really special to her. She knocked on the study door and walked in. She overheard them discussing the construction project for the chain of hotels Baba's company was building. She was relieved. She thought Baba was out for revenge after that morning's incident. She loved her Baba a lot but she also loved the Modi family as well. She wouldn't be able to bear it if anything bad happened to them, especially if that was because of her and her Baba. She was heartbroken from reading that mornings paper but she had to put up an act in front of her Baba. She couldn't let her Baba see how hurt she was because it would only make him madder. He already hated the Modi family and this would just be the icing on the cake.
"Work work work. Is that all you two ever talk about? It's not fair Baba. You were at the office all day working and now at home you are doing the same. No, stop it right now. Give yourselves a break. All this work isn't good for your health. Come with me outside right now. I have a lot to tell the both of you. Let's go." Rahul smiled at Gopi and the two men followed her into the living room. They seated themselves on the sofa and Gopi began telling them about her. She told them about Kamya and shopping. She told them about her engagement coming up and how excited she was. Sanjeev and Rahul both sat quietly listening to the girl chatter on. They were both still surprised that she had opened up so much. She could talk for hours if it was Sanjeev, Rahul, or Kamya. Put her in front of anyone else and she was as quieter than a mouse. She was chatting away like she had the happiest day of her life, but only she knew how much sorrow she was in. Her heart was in pain and she couldn't share it with anyone.
"Gopi beta, as much as I love listening to you tell me about your day I have some important things to discuss with you. We need to deliberate about the hotel project. We need to come up with a decision on who is going to get the project. I had Rahul bring the proposals home so you can have a look. We wanted your input as well. You are going to be the CEO of Shah industries after I retire and you need to start being a part of the decisions." Rahul handed over the files to Gopi. He was amazed at how quickly Gopi had learned her way around the business. They could really use her input in this decision. She thought with her heart as well as her head and sometimes Sanjeev and Rahul forgot to think with their heart when it came to business. Gopi filled that void for both of them and always brought a fresh and honest perspective.
"Okay Baba. Can I look at them first thing in the morning? Kamya has worn me out from shopping. I think I will go to bed now. Jai Shri Krishna Baba and Rahul." She walked upstairs to her room and the two men continued on with their business.
"Rahul I think these two are the strongest contenders right now. Modi Industries had a very strong proposal but their budget was a little high. A & U Group of Companies also had a very strong presentation and their budget was lower. I'll give Gopi these two proposals and take her opinions tomorrow morning."
"Baba," Gopi walked back into the living room. "I think I will take the proposals right now as I plan on getting up early tomorrow morning. I can review them tomorrow and I won't have to disturb you." She went to grab the files but the tea cup sitting next to them spilled all over them. "Oh no, here I'll clean them up." She grabbed the towels and wiped the tea from the files. "Don't worry Baba I can still read them. Only the top has been ruined."
"Don't worry Beti. We have other copies. You can take these and review them." She grabbed the files and went to her room. Sanjeev told Rahul to go home and get some rest as they had a lot of work and he too retreated to his room.
Gopi changed into her pajamas and walked over to her closet. She reached to the back and pulled out a key and stared at it. She pulled out the box that the key belonged to and opened it. She hadn't opened this since she had moved in with Baba. She reached in and pulled out the only memories she had of the man she loved. The one she had given her whole heart to. Her mangalsutra was hidden underneath her wedding picture. She wouldn't need this anymore because she no longer had any rights to it emotionally and now legally. Her Ahemji belonged to someone else. Every time she remembered that picture her heart broke into a million pieces. She had never seen him smile the way he was in that picture. It was the wedding announcement of Ahem Parag Modi and Anita Sharma (sorry guys I couldn't remember Anita's last name so I made one up). She was now Anita Ahem Modi. He was married to someone else and she was now all alone. She had no rights over him or his family, only Anita did.
"Kahnaji I only want Ahemji to be happy. If he is khush with Anita then I don't want anything else. He deserves to be content in life. With me he was always ashamed and sad. I am glad that he has found someone who can share his whole life with." She tore the picture in half leaving Ahem on one side and herself on the other, exactly like their relationship. She fell to the floor and began to sob. She wanted to escape. Escape from the pain in her heart, escape from her one-sided love for Ahemji, escape from her love for people she considered family. No matter how long and how far she ran she knew she could never escape. They all held such a special place deep in her heart that she could never escape from any of it. That made her weep the worst. No matter what she did this pain would never disappear. She took the two halves and threw them into the fireplace. These memories would only make her heart bleed. She then took her mangalsutra and chucked it into the fire as well. She suddenly realized what she did and grabbed it from the fire burning her hand in the process. She couldn't get rid of this just yet. It was the last connection she had to Ahemji and she needed to keep it with her. She locked up the box again and put it back. She grabbed the first aid box and wrapped her hand before going to bed.
Gopi woke the next morning bright and early and prepared the morning breakfast for Sanjeev. She then took the files and opened up the first one. A & U. She read the file cover to cover and knew that it was a strong proposal. She then opened up the next file and was shocked to see what it revealed.
