Chapter Four

Preparations for Kinjal's wedding were on full swing at the Modi Mansion. There wasn't a single thread of evidence left that a girl named Gopi ever lived there. Everyone in the house moved on and forgot about the girl that had ruined their name and reputation. There was one person in the house that refused to believe that Gopi would ever be involved in something like that. Parag would never believe that Gopi would have done that. The Gopi he had known and grown to love like a daughter was kind, gentle, loving, innocent, and nave. Such a thought would never cross Gopi's mind. She had only ever thought of others. He knew his son had loved someone else, maybe still did but Anita was nothing like Gopi. Anita was selfish, greedy, and characterless. He knew from the beginning that Anita was not right for Ahem but he needed to learn that for himself. He knew his son only married Gopi because of Koki, but he thought he would realize the jewel he had attained and Gopi's kind heart would win him over. Unfortunately it never did. He saw the way Ahem treated Gopi and he hated it. It wasn't Gopi's fault she could not read or write. She had never been given an opportunity to learn. It wasn't Gopi's fault that Koki had chosen her for him. He had said yes to the alliance. Nobody had put a gun to his head and forced him to marry Gopi. He was the one that wasn't man enough to stand up to his mother and tell her he didn't want to marry Gopi. He wasn't man enough to admit to everyone that he loved Anita and wanted to marry her. He hated that his son was so stone-hearted that he couldn't see Gopi's heart. He was taking all his anger out on Gopi and she being so innocent never uttered a word against it. Truth be told his son didn't deserve Gopi. Gopi deserved someone who would trust her, respect her, and more importantly love her. The incidents of that night made him sad. He recalled that eventful night that had taken Gopi away from this house.

"Kinjal where were you?" Koki shouted at her daughter. He had seen Koki mad many times, but he had never seen her like this. The house was full of guests listening and watching the commotion with greedy eyes and ears. This would travel like fire. "Answer me!" Kinjal stood there crying not knowing what to say or do.

"Mom! Woh mein, woh mein."

"What is this woh mein woh mein stuff. Answer my question. You have humiliated me, you dad, and our entire family today. WHERE WERE YOU?" She looked around the room and all eyes were on her and her mom.

"Mom can we please discuss this later. It's not something to argue with in front of all these people."

"STOP IT! You have already done enough in front of these people. Stop avoiding it Kinjal and answer my question. WHERE WERE YOU?"

"Okay I will answer your question Mom, but first you have to promise to stay calm." Koki glared at Kinjal and motioned for her to continue. "Mom I was letting Gopi Babhi into the house." Koki was shocked. Kinjal was letting Gopi in! Where had Gopi gone? At the mention of his wife's name Ahem's chin shot up. 'Oh no what had his wife done now,' he thought. 'That woman never missed an opportunity to humiliate him and his family. They all turned as a small figure walked into the room with her pallu on her head and her chin down. Koki ran over to Gopi and grabbed her hand. "GOPI. Why was Kinjal letting you in last night and what is the meaning of this letter?" Gopi knew Koki was mad and she didn't know what to say. She didn't have any answers to her questions.

"Gopi answer mom's questions. Where were you last night?" Gopi looked down on the floor not knowing how she was going to answer their question. She recalled the threat from last night from that hooded figure. 'TELL ANYONE ANYTHING AND YOUR HUSBAND DIES! Do you understand me? Stay quiet." She knew she looked guilty because she wasn't saying anything but she knew she had to stay quiet.

"I'll tell you where she was last night." Everyone turned towards the voice. "Are you going to tell them or should I Gopi?" Rashi stood there staring at Gopi. Gopi looked up at Rashi and didn't know what to say. Did Rashi know or was she missing something. "Fine I'll tell them. Gopi was meeting up Eleshji and I have the pictures to prove it. She threw the pictures at Gopi and continued on. "I know I haven't been exactly nice to you Gopi, but you were still my little sister. Here you were pretending to be innocent and nave, but you were really plotting against this family. I will also admit that I haven't been the perfect daughter-in-law but I have tried my best to keep the name and reputation of this family intact. You disappointed me Gopi. Why did you go to meet Eleshji last night? Answer my question Gopi!" Gopi stayed silent. She didn't have any answers for anyone. "Eleshji, why did Gopi want to meet you that late at night? What was so urgent?" Everyone looked over at Elesh hoping he would have some answers.

Elesh looked down and thought for a second. "I got a call late last night from someone telling me they wanted to meet me right away. They wanted to talk to me about Kinjal. I got really worried and left right away thinking something had happened to her. When I got there I saw Gopi. She was talking so strangely I couldn't really understand what she was trying to say to me. She kept telling me I needed to call off the wedding and what was happening wasn't right. She kept saying something about Kinjal and another guy. She kept saying Kinjal was pregnant. I was so confused. She suddenly handed me all the jewelry Ma had given to Kinjal and told me Kinjal wouldn't need this anymore. I kept asking her why, but she just turned around and ran away. I didn't want to tell anyone because it would make your family look bad and ruin your reputation. I'm sorry Maaji. Please forgive me." He pleaded in front of Koki. Koki was shocked. Her Gopi was trying to destroy her own daughter's life and reputation. She didn't want to believe it. She bent down and picked up the pictures. There it was staring her in the face. It was Gopi and Elesh. The background looked familiar. It was the park about 3 miles down the road from Modi Mansion. She was shocked.

"Why Gopi? What has my Kinjal done to you that you are bent on destroying her life? Why would you do this? Why?" Koki fell to the ground. She couldn't say anything else. The Modi Family had been shaken. Gopi seemed so innocent and nave. She couldn't have done this. Ahem looked at his mother and he couldn't stand it any longer. This was it. This girl had done it. He had warned her never to hurt her mother and today she had crossed all limits. She hurt his mother, tried to ruin his sister's life, and ruined the Modi Family's honor. He walked over to Gopi and grabbed her hand tightly.

"Did you meet Elesh last night?" He shouted at her. Gopi jumped back at the sound of his voice.

"Ji woh. Yes I did meet Eleshji last night."

"Did you say all those things about my sister?"

"Yes! I did say that about Kinjal." Ahem was shocked. He couldn't believe his ears. He knew this girl wasn't as innocent as she pretended to be. "Where did you hear about all this? Do you know this for a fact or are you trying to ruin my sister's life?" Gopi looked down. She didn't know how she was going to answer this question.

"It's true Ahemji. Kinjalben is in love with someone else. She is pregnant with his child. You have to believe me I was doing it for Kinjalben's sake. I only wanted her to be happy."

"Bhai how could you even think for a second that this could be true? I would never humiliate Mom and her upbringing like that. I AM NOT PREGNANT! Mom knows this is true. She went with me to the doctor yesterday because I wasn't feeling well." Ahem looked from Kinjal to Koki. The look on Koki's face disclosed that Kinjal was telling the truth. Ahem turned towards Gopi and slapped her across her face. Gopi fell back from the force of it.

"I'll tell you why she did this Mom. She did it to get back at me. She did it because I do not love her or treat her as a wife so she wants my sister to have the same fate. She wants to destroy this family name and reputation." He turned towards Gopi. "I have never met a more shameless girl in my entire life. And where did you get that jewelry? It was in Mom's room safe. You probably stole that out of there too. Don't you have any remorse? You're a liar and a thief. My mom welcomed you into this house. She loved you and treated you like a daughter and this is how you repay her? I HATE YOU!" He shouted at her one last time before leaving the room. Everyone was shocked. Chirag respectfully asked all the guests to leave as this was a family matter and walked everyone out. The Modi Family was disgusted with Gopi. They left her on the floor and all retreated to their rooms. Koki was the last one left. She turned and stole one last glance at Gopi. She was disgusted at how wrong she had been in recognizing Gopi. She turned and ran up to her room. Gopi sat there sobbing for quite a while. She heard the sound of thunder outside. It was beginning to rain hard. She slowly got up and made her way to her room. Little did she know someone was already there waiting for her.

"Ahemji please listen to me? Please I didn't steal anything. Please just listen to me. I would never even dream of hurting Kinjalben. "

"CHUP! I don't want to hear another word from your lying face ever again. You don't deserve my Mom's love and you definitely don't deserve the Modi last name. You are nothing to me do you understand. I break every relationship you share with me and with this family. You are an illiterate hateful person. I knew I was right in not loving you. Everyone has seen your real face tonight Gopi and they want nothing to do with you. Even your sister Rashi and Mama Mami are disgusted. I want you to pack your things and GET OUT OF THIS HOUSE. Do you hear me? GET OUT!" Gopi looked up at her husband with tears rolling down her eyes. She grabbed the suitcase he threw at her and began to pack.

Parag was broken from his thoughts. Someone had framed Gopi but he didn't know who. No one was ready to listen to him. The mere mention of Gopi's name in MM was prohibited. He felt defeated. He didn't know where Gopi was or how she was but he prayed that she was safe. Maybe it was best that she was away from this family. If they couldn't recognize her pure heart they didn't deserve her.
