Chapter 5
Marriages are made in heaven. The pairs maybe good or evil or may be one good and the other evil… But God is the one who decides the fate.
It's a beautiful morning and Gopi has already started her daily chores. She is getting everything ready for her own engagement as Urmi is not at all ready to be the elder for her except in front of the society.
This was not the end of troubles for Gopi as Urmi didn't stop at asking her to get the arrangements done by herself, but she was also plotting to get her daughter into MM along with Gopi.
The mom-daughter duo are planning and plotting in Rashi's room
Urmi – Dikhra, Hetal has to be swayed towards the idea of making you her bahu…
Rashi – but how do we do that, mom? We can't show them that how well versed I am at everything, as they already know the truth… even if everyone hasn't been there to see my humiliation, but I won't put it past Koki to tell everything to her family at home.
Urmi – then we have only one way. Fake it that we are totally happy about Gopi's alliance in front of all and sundry and put our plan into action where we trap Jigar.
Rashi – But how will we trap him and what kind of trap?
Urmi – the trap called society and its strictures. A trap where the only escape that would be left for Modi family is to make you their DIL, even if they are not happy about it.
Rashi – I think mummy, you have some really good plan…
Urmi – just wait and watch girl. You just wait and watch.
After this began the mother-daughter duo's ohh-we-love-Gopi drama. Their neighbors knew them better, but can't say anything to their face.
It was the day of Gopi and Ahem's engagement ceremony. Knowing Gopi's Mami too well to leave everything in her hand, Koki herself shops for Gopi's attire as well under the pretext of a ritual.
We see Gopi coming down the steps of Modi Mansion. She is in Sea Green ghaghra with Gold embroidery, wearing emeralds. She looked like an angel who was just descending from the heavens, to bestow peace and prosperity to everyone. Like a ray of sunshine, which falls at the same time on mud and sparkling water. It is not sun's fault that mud doesn't know how to enhance itself in those pure blessings, unlike sparkling water which changes it hues and glorifies in the love of sun.
The Emeralds that complimented her sea blue eyes were gifted to her by Jitu Bhai. This set never came into Urmi's notice as after the alliance was fixed, Jitu Bhai gave it in the safe keeping of Koki, since Koki already knew about Gopi's condition in their house by now. Also, the money spent on the set was collected over the years without Urmi's knowledge. As we say, if we take a bucket of water out of sea, no one notices but if the bucket was infact a bucket, everyone will notice it. So, Jitu Bhai saved the money to give Gopi atleast something from his side too along with the money his sister put in his keeping for her daughter at the time of her death for her only child. This was in form of fixed deposit and bonds, of which Urmi has no knowledge and she would believe anything anyone would tell her. And she is told that they can't take that money as only Gopi can have it by signing her name. Now Urmi won't want to lose her servant and thus she lets go of the money issue.
Ahem was looking at her coming down, as if in a trance. He was mesmerized by her beauty. And as if to compliment Gopi, Koki got him a Golden sherwani with Green embroidery. They were looking like a pair of wood nymphs, all decked in green. The color of groW*H, health and prosperity.
They exchanged rings on the note of Vedic Mantras chanted by the pundit to ward off evil and evil eyes.
But some evils were already inside doing their best to incorporate themselves in this family along with Gopi. Rashi is as sweet as saccharine to Gopi and is all over Gopi and Ahem like a rash. As if to show, no other sister will be happier for Gopi than her. Though Koki saw through her, Hetal was truly impressed by the love between sisters. Koki didn't say anything since she didn't want to create an unnecessary scene on the engagement day. So, the engagement happened without much trouble for either side.
Before Gopi went back, she came to Koki to return the jewelry as she was unaware as to whose gift it is for her. Koki didn't bother to tell her that it was for her from her Mama but was very impressed by honesty and innocence of Gopi and swears to try her best to protect it from any evil eagles.
Ahem didn't say much about Gopi though he thought she was beautiful, since he remembered Anita's betrayal. Anita was also beautiful but not a person who was beautiful inside out. Ahem didn't want to trust anyone as yet. So, he kept his opinions to himself. He just grunted as and when Jigar used to tease him about the beauty of Gopi. Unlike Jigar, Kinjal was very quiet as she was not sure what is happening and why is it happening. She knows her bother loved Anita, but he was getting married to Gopi, without complaining. She didn't know the mystery behind it and once in a while reminded Ahem about Anita.
Thus the days went by. Rashi persuaded Gopi to visit her sasural once in a while during these days, so she can impress Hetal instead and inspire trust in her. Hetal was very taken in by the friendliness of Rashi, but not Koki. Koki was well aware that something vile and stinky was cooking in the witches' cauldron, but since she didn't know what, she couldn't raise an alarm. Nevertheless, she warned Hetal about Rashi's slyness. Hetal dismissed Koki's concern saying that her mother might be bad, but Rashi is a nice girl.
By the time it was the day of marriage, Rashi was well into the Good Books of Hetal. Hetal simply adored her. Though not more than she adored Gopi, but Rashi still had a place in Hetal's heart. Koki was getting worried by this situation. She knew this calm was the calm before the storm, which might take the whole Modi family under deep sea, where they might even have to struggle for life let alone peace in life.
It was the marriage day and both the houses were pretty busy and since Urmi was very confident about her plan succeeding, she took active interest in the preparation.
Gopi was wearing a deep red saree with very beautiful and intricate hand embroidery in rich Gold. She was decked in Gold from head to toe. Today she was wearing rubies to go with her red saree. It was her mom's set, which she had worn at her marriage. She had a red chunri on her head which hid half her face, but the way she walked was as if she is even afraid to crush the grass under her feet, as if she is an ethereal being floating on the earth.
Ahem was in his Golden Sherwani, with a red turban on his head. He was looking very handsome, like a true prince.
The marriage was underway. Kinjal who was still confused about Ahem's decision to marry Gopi and unaware of the dinner incident of Anita with her family, resented this marriage of Ahem to Gopi. Thinking that Ahem is sacrificing his life for the whim of their mother, Kinjal tries to persuade Ahem not to go through with the marriage, for the sake of his own sanity and happiness. Ahem ignores her suggestion and tells her that the bride is of mom's choice and mom has better understanding of human nature than I do. Though, I won't be able to accept her immediately, but in time maybe, as I myself don't know what fate has planned for me and this girl.
Kinjal was not very impressed by the behavior of her brother and thinks that he has lost it completely and is being manipulated by their mother. She distinctly remembered how good Ahem and Anita looked with each other, complimenting each other in looks, status and education. Even if it weren't just for looks, her brother loved Anita. Only Anita. Even Kinjal liked Anita and her style of living, her class as she has termed it. She only wanted Anita to be her Sister-in-law(SIL), so she had an evil smile on her face as if to say "the game has just begun, watch your step if you don't want to get hurt".
During the marriage ceremony Sisters-in-Law of Ahem were trying to steal his shoes (a ritual during marriages in north India mostly). Rashi knew it was her opportunity and she stole Jigar's shoe instead of Ahem's and went into a room alone. Jigar had noticed his missing shoe and since it would be awkward to move in single shoe he thinks of following the girl who took it. He sees her going into a room and follows her in to retrieve his shoe. He is unaware that he has been set up. Jigar and Rashi start fighting about the shoe, where Jigar is demanding for his shoe and Rashi is denying all knowledge of the shoe. The fight turns into a situation where Jigar trips over Rashi's lehenga and falls on top of her. Right at this moment one of Rashi's friend who was helping steal Ahem's shoe and was sent by Urmi past that room to get some drinks for guests, notices this and shrieks. The whole family now gathers to see what happened and to their dismay they notice Jigar and Rashi in a very compromising position. Seeing her chance Urmi laments the loss of her daughter's good name and showing that she is very disappointed in her daughter, starts hitting her. Gopi who couldn't stand this comes to Rashi's side. But, as she lacks self-confidence, she doesn't know what to say to stop the tirade and humiliation of Rashi. Urmi is still shedding crocodile tears saying now who will marry my daughter, I never knew she would humiliate me in such a way and what not. Hetal tries to calm her but to no avail.
Jigar being a gentleman owns up to his mistake, saying "though I slipped and fell on Rashi, since it's a girl's reputation, I am ready to make amends and marry her"
Everyone is shocked. One can just imagine Koki's expression. She was outmaneuvered. And to keep up the good name of Modi family, they had to marry Jigar to Rashi. Hetal, who still has good impression about Rashi, is also ready for this alliance, to save a girl's reputation as well as to get a good DIL(her thoughts).
The marriage which was interrupted by this Rashi-Jigar incident resumed and Gopi got married to Ahem first, making her the elder bahu of Modi family. This marriage was followed by Jigar and Rashi's marriage. When Rashi comes all decked up in her wedding finery, Koki wonders how she can keep Rashi under control, to keep her from harming the family with her devious schemes. Thus Rashi and Jigar's marriage happens as was planned by Urmi.
Thus Gopi is married to Ahem and Rashi to Jigar. They arrive at Modi Mansion and the rituals of formal entry of DIL into her in-laws house follow. DIL tumbles the Rice Kalash. It is said that the farther the rice grains go, the luckier the girl will be for the house. They are then taken to the family temple to get blessings from the God, Lord Krishna before the start of rest of rituals. The next one was where hands of DIL were dipped in aalta and their imprint is to be made on the temple's wall along with the grooms. This signifies the formal introduction of her as the family's daughter in law to the God*. Way into the midnight, the newly-weds are allowed to go to their rooms after a whole lot of teasing and fun.
Jigar is very friendly with Rashi, but the money-minded and mom-influenced Rashi can't see her blessings and thwarts Jigar. She excuses herself on the grounds of tiredness and is asleep. Jigar thinking that Rashi is in a trauma because of the suddenness of their marriage takes the insult in his stride and doesn't mind much.
Ahem is in his study and ponders on the turn his life took. His disillusionment of the emotion of love. His marriage to a stranger. His new life which is to start today as husband to a stranger. He is wondering about the expectations of his wife and realizes, it's not the girl's fault that he lost his love and plans to be friendly to her.
Here in Gopi-Ahem's room, Gopi is very nervous and is anticipating a loving husband. She sees Ahem coming towards her. Ahem sits on the bed and is removing her ghoonghat. He lifts her lovely face and says "you are very beautiful". Gopi blushes a beetroot red giving competition to her bride's attire as well. At this time she hears a little noise and she comes out of her dream and illusion.
Ahem enters and closes the door. He approaches Gopi. She is very nervous and her hands are slightly shaking.
Ahem – I know you are my mom's choice and I trust my mom. Try to make sure you never hurt her. (Gopi nods her head). Though we are married I am still a stranger to you and you are a stranger to me too. I don't want to start our married life being strangers.(Gopi again nods her head)
Ahem is taken aback. Does this girl ever speak or is she dumb and he says as much too
Ahem – are you dumb by any chance. Is that why you just nod your head and don't reply.
Gopi – Ji nahi…
Ahem – Thank God. I was beginning to think, you can't speak atall. Ok, for now, let's start as friends and we will see where fate takes this relationship.
Gopi - Ji
Ahem – Since we are friends now, you will come to me if ever face any problem with anyone. Don't always bother mom.
Ahem leaves to sleep on the sofa, having a big burden lifted off his shoulder. Gopi is left thinking why her husband is talking like that. Didn't he agree to the marriage out of his own free will? Though she wants to know the real reason of their marriage, she couldn't find the courage to ask about it from anyone.
Though, Gopi becomes elder bahu of this generation, she had been programmed to bow to every whim and fantasy of every human being. Not a good quality for elder DIL of a family.
Precap - how will the Modi Mansion welcome their New DILs? what new schemes are up Rashi's sleeve to make Gopi's life miserable? Will Koki be able to save Gopi always? What will Kinjal do now to get Gopi away from Ahem's life? Will Ahem come to love Gopi at some point?
