I am disgusted in the way the medical profession is portrayed in these
serials. Doctor's seem to agree to whatever diagnosis that is required of
them irrespective of right or wrong e.g. Kaveri getting her dr. to say Shubra
cannot have an abortion to Rimzim being declred mad in Piya Ka Ghar. One
would think Dr's in India can be bought and Dont have to follow Hippocrates
oath. I find this portral of the medical profession disgusting and demeaning!

you are so right. the medical profession is portrayed as a field where the idea of ethics is literally absent. i live in north america and have seen here that most students who apply for medical school are geniuses and extremely talented, but still don't get admitted simply because they show a lack of ethical principles in the interview that assesses these qualities. i'm not sure how it works in india, but regardless, basic ethics should be like religious tenets for a doctor, otherwise he/she is a disgrace to the profession. in serials, it is always portrayed that they are a bunch of idiots with white coats and stethoscopes hanging around their necks with no manners and no moral values. even when they are shown as operating on a patient and the family asks them about the patient, they makes comments like "please don't disturb us and let us do our work." is that a response expected from a doctor? it's his or her responsiblity to calm the patient and show compassio and empathy. and the bribery and blackmailing that they surrender to, is simply disgusting. indian serials always convey the wrong messages and an inacurate picture of indian society as a whole, in every aspect. if i mention examples, i would have to write a book. but i completely agree with you.

I hope not this kind of things happening in medical profession. bcos i see this in lots of serail where they give false reports for money. If it is happening in real life it is very sad.

My favorite is when they show a doctor taking a pulse (of a woman) and then declaring her pregnant! It is beyond me how they come up with these retarted ideas. Most of the shows make mockery of a sickness/disease and the cures that are available. The show Mamta showed Anand suffering from Alzheimer's disease and then recovering from it as well (as of this moment, there is no cure for this disease). I feel like these serial makers don't waste a second doing some researching and coming up something a bit more believable.

I agree with all of you.

Almost all these serials portray doctors as rude or unethical. Last week, I saw in 'sindoor..' too. Karan was bribing the doc to make vedika mad.

These directors should stop doing it.

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on India Forums.

I have really enjoyed reading the posts, and my appreciation to all the kind folks who take the time to post updates, video links and such.

The portrayal of doctors in Indian serials leaves much to be desired, and is anything but realistic. I feel an Indian version of a serial like NBC's ER would do well in India. In fact, there is another documentary serial called 'Trauma - life in the ER' (I think it airs on TLC) would be a real eye-opener for the audience in general as to how hospitals really handle crisis situations.

May be the readers of this and other fora (or is it forums) can put their ideas together and come up with an intelligent plot, that would completely sweep the ratings. I, for one, would watch that show.

Best wishes,
:~)Shoba.

I guess its the same with any profession - Police 90% of the time are corrupt. If anyone of you watch Sarkar --- soo disgusting. Worst of all is 'Medical Profession' - I don't know how close it is to the reality but it sure is hard to watch.

Forget just Medical profession, ethics in India are not emphasized in any profession. Sorry to my Indian friends who live in India (I'M AN INDIAN TOO), but in my view Indian education sucks big time!!! I've studied both in India and Canada and when I make a comparison, there is not only a difference between the structure and strategies used but also in the goals. For example, the entrance test for pharmacy in Canada does not have a single chemistry or math question. The test only judges the ethics and honesty. India needs to go back to the old gurukul values when real education was strengthning of character and expansion of the mind, it is not just rote memorization and reading from books.

I beg to differ my dear. I have studied in both US and India and though both structures have their pros and cons I disagree that Indian education sucks big time.. My hubby is a doctor and trained in India and has worked in both India and US. He is extremely impressed by the doctors in India though the technology is not state of the art there (Except in big hospitals) and like all of us finds that doctors in serials are far far away from reality and he gets annoyed watching such crappy depiction of doctors in serials!! Of course some doctors can be bought (that's true in all countries) but I certainly won't make that sweeping generalization that everyone is like that. In my hubby's hospital in India doctors would not charge from other doctor's spouses/relatives (even if the doctors worked elsewhere) saying it was against medical ethics to charge from a doctor's family (mother, father, spouse or kid)...As for me I have studied in both places and I would say that there are good points in both systems...BTW, even 15 years ago I was in a school which did not have exams till 6th grade and we just had regular assesments, my Physics teacher was very particular that we don't memorize, etc (Now the options are even more in India).......And yes, we had moral values and sciences taught in school and the basics as far as ethics, etc. was drilled heavily into us...So there is good and bad everywhere. The bottom line is serials do not depict reality and thank God for that... Otherwise why is it that there are so called co-incidents everytime in serials?? Why is it that everyone gets pregnant (unwed people I mean) 1st time in serials?? Why do they have cliched dialogues in serials? If they were real, life would be a drama. So yes, though it is annoying to hear these dialogeus and see such unethical stuff in shows, we need to remember these are shows after all...

I could not resist from posting to this topic. I have studied only in India. Yes memorization seems to be con in our education. It is not easy to change the system over night. When we were doing our 12th exams, the pattern of the question paper was changed a couple of months before the finals. The reason was that the questions were more objective, which would make students more practical in their approach towards the subject.

These are serials afterall and they do not depict reality. As far as doctors go, my husband was diagnosed incorrectly for a back problem and was given epidural shots when there was no need for it. Now can I say that the US system of doctors sucks? My daughter was put on a horrible medicine when there was nothing wrong with it and when she started to have nausea and other side effects for the medicine, I took her to another doctor who was wondering why she was on the medicine in the first place!!! Doctors and treatments differ and it cannot be generalized the ethics and morals suck in a country. To me there are areas in US to where morals and ethics do not stand to my level, but then that is my problem.

Here the population is less, resources are more, so people have the time to think and spend time on how to improve things. In case of India, things are different, it is still the survival of the fittest there. If the population increases here and ethinic violences stir up, you will see degradation in US and other countries too. India despite its own internal issues has been able to develop.

Whenever there is a traffic jam out here, I see the real nature of people come out.. and then feel happy that people are the same no matter where they are.. whether in India or here 😊
