All about character

The first dusky bahu of the small screen has made it big. These days Rajshree Thakur is doing a Sadma and playing a child-like character on her hit show Saat Phere, which seems designed to project her versatility.

Recently, you have changed your personal wardrobe to a more modern look — jeans, T-shirt. Will we see that change on screen too?

(Laughs) See, after playing the character of a bahu, I have been wearing saris for almost three years. Now that has changed since my character in Saat Phere has become child-like and I am wearing ghagras and skirts. So, I'm getting the opportunity to slowly change my wardrobe.

Are you happy with the way your character is regressing into childhood in Saat Phere?

Yes, of course I am. This is a challenge for me and I'm thoroughly enjoying enacting all the things which are happening in my character's life. This is my first drama show and in my first show itself, I have had a chance to play a character with so many shades. It is not an easy thing to portray but it is a great opportunity for any actor.

The childlike character seems inspired from the film Sadma...

I do not have time to watch movies. Regarding homework, it is more my observation. You can see many kids around you so I watch their behaviour. It is really difficult to play such a character because the character should look innocent and not irritating. So, I had to be very careful while playing this shade.

Why are you not doing any other show on television?

The thing is that (laughs) I'm under a contract.... If you are playing the lead role in any show, you do not have the time to do any other show.

Even after television has become so huge, people still call it regressive...

Maybe it is; but people want to see these shows. It is the audience who decides what will be shown on television. It is up to the people if they want to watch good shows and something different. The audience's acceptance is of utmost importance. The scenario is changing a bit with the advent of reality shows; also shows like Virrudh have a different concept. I'm hopeful that this scenario will change even further.

Do you also believe that television shows are largely for female audiences?

No I do not think so. I have met so many kids and men who watch these shows. I know so many army officers and doctors who have come to me and told me: 'We have watched your show because it is not a saas bahu saga'.

Does your husband watch soaps too?

If he gets time, he does watch them; especially my show. He is my biggest critic. It is a good thing for me since I take feedback from him on what can be done and what can be avoided. He is also a good actor and we have done a telefilm together.

Being a good dancer would you have liked to be a part of celebrity dance shows?

Frankly, I do not think so. After seeing the fate of such reality shows, you know what I'm trying to say. For me, dancing is for pleasure and I will not do 12 hours of rehearsals and then perform.

Would you like to be a part of Ektaa Kapoor's camp?

See, I will not give a specific statement. For me, it's most important whether a production house, be it Balaji or someone else for that matter, makes good shows on good subjects. Also, my character is of utmost importance. That is the first criterion for me to choose a show.

Any plans of starting a family in the near future

Akshay Anand (TOI Photo)
Akshay Anand's face not be new on TV, but the actor got a lot more recognition from his role in Saat Phere.

Surprisingly the role wasn't meant to be as important or so long. Says Akshay, "It was meant to be a small role, for about six months. In fact when I signed the serial I wasn't too happy with the role, but as the story progressed the role developed into something that was beyond anything that I expected. The story was
about Saloni and the emphasis was going to be on her relationship with her family, my character was only supposed to help her from behind closed doors."

For Akshay the changing track proved to be very helpful, but how does it feel when a storyline is changed to suit the TRP rating? "It can be very frustrating. It was different with Saat Phere because we got TRPs that no one expected us to get. Of course credit for that should go to Saloni played by Rajshree Thakur who's been quite a find and Nahar that's Sharad Kelkar who are the lead characters," says Akshay. Currently, Akshay is enjoying the high TRPs that the show is garnering despite competition from shows like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi or Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii.

Besides Saat Phere, Akshay is also seen in Doli Saja Ke on SaharaOne. He'll also be seen in Neelanjanaa on 9X. Speaking about his new serial he says, "The movie is about a investigative journalist, who's married with a child. But due to certain circumstances he has to help out a girl and allow her to live in his house. The story becomes interesting when this girl falls for him." But while this is a role that suits Akshay, he plays father to Barkha Bisht in Doli Sajaa Ke. Does that feel weird? "No, it doesn't," he says. "I have a nine-year-old son, so it's not tough playing a father. Besides what has age got to do with it. I think the role is very interesting and that's the reason I have accepted it. Also, it's not like I am the only one doing it. You have people playing father or mother to actors their age," he laughs.

Ask him about television being a woman's medium and he says, "As far as the audience is concerned, I am sure men watch as much television as women do. But yes, Indian television is dominated by women. It's not easy for an actor to get a good role. Most male characters behave seems different. it's not the way a real person would respond," he points.

Saloni to get back her memory soon

Rajshree Vaidya aka Saloni behaving like a 5-year-old child in Saat Phere due to her memory loss following an accident has not appreciated by the audience.
This has resulted in a fall in the TRPs of the show. A fresh track will now be introduced which see Saloni getting her memory will back.

Abdul Karim, Executive Producer of the show, admits, "The present track has not been liked by fans. We have got many mails questioning Saloni's behaviour in the show. We got some 50 mails and a majority have not liked Saloni's costumes as they like her in a sari. The audience wants to see the lovely chemistry between Nahar (Sharad Kelkar) &Saloni (Rajshree Vaidya) so now we are changing the track. From next week we will be shooting the track in which Saloni will get back her memory. It will be aired around the 1st week of February."

Abdul also accepted that the TRPs of the show had fallen. "Before her accident the rating was 6 but now it has fallen to 5 so we have to get things back on track."

Rajshree had done lots of research to play the childlike character including watching Sridevi's classic Sadma. What went wrong then? "It's matter of things clicking. Everything depends upon the audience choice. In this case, they must have not liked the track."

So all Saloni fans will get their wish as their dear bahu will be fine in a few days.

Saloni excited to dance with SRK

Rajshri Thakur aka Saloni, Saat Phere is more excited to shake a leg with superstar Shah Rukh Khan than hoping to be a winner at the inaugural Global Indian T.V.Honours (Balaji) on Friday at the Andheri Sports Complex.

The ecstatic actress tells us, "I'm looking forward to meet him. For the first time I will be with him on stage and will be holding his hands. I'm a great fan of his since my college days so it will be like a dream come true for me."

How hopeful are you of winning an award? "Frankly speaking I'm only excited to watch SRK closely. It won't matter if I win an award or not."

Rajshri adds she won't be asking him anything as almost everything about him is public. "I just want to see him dancing as he will be performing on the Chak De song with me and my other fellow actresses. I have heard that SRK will be coming in his Fauji look which will be great," she exclaims

Rajshri, hope you have a great time dancing with SRK.

Sharad Kelkar loses 9 kgs

Sharad Kelkar aka Nahar Singh of Saat Phere has lost 9 kgs in just 25 days. The actor, now on a forced break for two weeks after he fractured his leg, decided to lose some weight while recovering. We asked Sharad about his diet plan.

Then Now

"I have been on a diet for the past 25 days. I am consulting Dr. Sarita Davre and have been strictly following her diet plan which has been instrumental in my weight loss. It was not Kirti's but my conscious decision to lose weight. Currently, I am avoiding sweets and fried food. Although fast food tastes delicious, it is indeed sweet poison. Now, I am concentrating on adding boiled vegetables and salads to my diet. I'm used to dieting because I used to be a model in the past."

"My dietician has told me to eat non-veg without gravy. She has also directed me to have milk, something I really don't like, but I am taking it regularly because I want to stick to her diet. But the most important thing is that I have quit alcohol and smoking altogether."

Sharad's diet plan
I begin my day with a cup of black tea and during break fast I have a glass of orange juice and pasta. I'm strictly avoiding food that is served on the sets as it is very oily. Therefore, I carry my lunch from home which mainly comprises of fruits especially apples which is really helping me lose weight.

Does your diet plan include workouts?
"Whenever I get time off I head to the gym. My aim is to achieve a well-toned body...As of now SRK's six-packs are a distant dream."

Sharad Kelkar who hails from Gwalior began his career as a physical trainer and also participated in Grasim Mr India contest in 2002 before embarking on an acting career.

Gunjan Walia's Saat Phere

Gunjan Walia, who plays Meera in Saat Phere, is getting ready for her real life saat phere on March 3 to TV actor Sachin Verma.

The actress, who got engaged last year, admits she is struggling to keep up with her busy shooting schedule and her marriage preparations." I am exciting about my real life Saat Phere. Preparations are going on here and there but I really have to work them around my work schedule. I have finished my main shopping so I don't have too much tension now."

< align=center marginWidth=0 marginHeight=0 src="http://www.indya.com/common/newsbanner.htm" Border=0 width=300 scrolling=no height=250>

Speaking about all the shopping she has done, Gunjan says, "I have bought my lehenga for the wedding day. It is a designer piece by Priya and Chintan. It is of several colours. I have also bought new suits from Mumbai. Apart from these, I bought a few necklaces and jewellery from Tanishq. When Sachin's parents came to meet me they told me that Sachin bought a diamond ring for me but unfortunately I was not able to see it."

As for the groom, Sachin will be wearing an Indo-western outfit. "Sachin has bought his outfit from Millionaire. I have been with him ,when he bought the costume. It is very interesting - not completely offbeat but it will surely stand out. At the same time it matches what I will be wearing," she says.

Gunjan and Sachin will be tying the knot in Delhi but they're also making sure they don't forget their friends in Mumbai. "The wedding is in Delhi at a banquet hall. Both our parents stay near Delhi so it is a convenient place for all of us. I will leave on the February 13 for Punjab – that's where my family stays. I will spend two weeks there and prepare for the wedding. Then we will fly to Delhi. Since all our friends and co-stars cannot travel so far so we will also have a reception here in Mumbai. If we don't they will kill me."

Gunjan has taken a month's break from her show. She says,"I will be on a break from February 13 to March 13. Since they cannot shoot for a month of episodes in advance, they will probably send my character off somewhere on the show. I will start shooting again two weeks after my wedding."

The couple has still not decided on where they will spend their honeymoon. "I have no clue where we will be going but Sachin likes to roam a lot. It is very cold here and it will be even colder in Delhi and Punjab. So I would definitely like to go somewhere where it is snowing," says Gunjan.
At present on Saat Phere, Gunjan has married the recently widowed Dheer. In coming weeks, Jeejisa will fall into her own trap that she created for her entire family.

Accident ho gaya…

Seems like it is the accident season in television these days. In almost all the shows, accidents and deaths are taking place. We list the 5 accidents which have taken place in various shows recently.

5-Saat Phere

Kakisa's car had an accident which was planned by Jiji. Kakisa was aware about the place where Jiji had kept Brijesh's child. However, when Jiji came to know that Kakisa knows everything about her, she planned the accident and also kept her jewellery in Kakisa's car so that the entire family thinks that she was running away with the jewellery. Kakisa is in the hospital currently in a critical condition.

4-Kayamath

After a lot of drama over Sukriti's child, Milind finally realized that Hrithwik is his sister's child and not Prachi's. He decided to marry her again. The marriage preparations were on in a huge scale when Milind found out that it was Ayesha who had kidnapped Hrithwik. He broke his friendship with Ayesha who loves him. Badly hurt, she decided to kill Prachi and tried to hit her with her car. But Milind came to meet Prachi outside the temple. He saw the car coming and pushed Prachi aside. Milind is now fighting for his life in the hospital.

3-Karam Apna Apna

Gauri was being blackmailed by her sister's husband who threatened to harass her sister so Gauri had forgave him and allowed him to stay at the house, though the entire family was opposing to her. Her father in law transferred the whole property on her name. Gauri was then hit by car. She fell in a lake and her body has still not been found.

2-Banoo Main Teri Dulhann

Sindoora managed to kill both Vidya and Sagar. She shot them with a gun and both fell into a valley. Sagar and Vidya have died in the show and will be re-born soon.

1-Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi

Tulsi and Ganga were in the car when Rishabh purposely tried to hit them with the truck he was driving. Both Tulsi and Ganga were in the hospital. However, later on doctors announced that Ganga is out of danger and Tulsi too has come back.

Apart from these 5, there are some more accidents in store. In Kumkum, as well, the lead pair is going to die soon and the new cast will be introduced. Apart from that Meri Doli Tere Aangna's leads are also going to die soon in the show, because of less TRPs of the show.

Well the year has just started…wonder what the future months have in store.

Saloni ready to take revenge

Rajshree Vaidya aka Saloni, Saat Phere had met with an accident two months back and was behaving like a 5-year-old child but now she has recovered and has come to know the truth that her sister-in-law died due to Jiji (Nivedita Bhattacharya) and that she was even responsible for her turning mentally challenged.

Abdul Karim, Excuetive Producer, tells us, "Nahar (Sharad Kelkar) tells Saloni about how her and Aditu's accident was planned by Jiji (ex-wife of Brijesh) so now she will be on a mission to find the truth as to why Jijisa had done it. She will trap her by constantly keeping an eye on her. This track will go on for more than 2 weeks and in this fight, Nahar and Neel will help her out."

We hope the audience will appreciate this new twist and that's the reason why Saloni has got her memory back."

Let's see if Saloni fans will support her in this fight for justice.

Yes, I had arrived

Smriti Iraani (Former Tulsi of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi)

"I hate the fact that I'm a product, which has to 'arrive' and make a mark"

I have no idea when I can be said to have 'arrived'. I do not aspire to 'arrive' on the yardsticks set by industry brokers. And I do not judge such things in terms of money. I hate the fact that I'm a product which has to 'arrive' and make a mark.

For me, the moment the audience accepts you and compliments you for your work, that is the moment when you feel you have made a mark. My audience is most important to me, not any other industry pundit. When you connect to your audience, everything else follows.

Ronit Roy (Mr Bajaj of Kasautii Zindagii Kay)

"Ronit will never say he has arrived; for then people will say Ronit has passed away"

"I feel I have not arrived as yet. I'm still struggling. That is what they say about life — life is about running; it is not about arriving at a destination. You reach one destination and from there you take a stepping stone to another. People who have done so many inspiring things in life want to do so much more. I still have to raise two children; my elder daughter is going to college now and I have two small children — so, there is so much to do materialistically too. Ronit will never say he has arrived; for then people will say Ronit has passed away! That would be the end of it. When you have been given a beautiful life, live it to the fullest. I still have much more to achieve in life.

Divyanka Tripathi (Vidya of banoo Main Teri Dulhann)

"It is not possible for a TV actor to say that he/she has arrived because there are a lot of highs and lows in the industry"

I can only say I have arrived when I am able to anchor Kaun Banega Crorepati (laughs) because you have to be a Shah Rukh Khan to say that. As long as you have a major project on television, you are on a high. But it is not possible for a TV actor to say that he/she has arrived because there are a lot of highs and lows in the industry. Materialistic happiness cannot define the arrival of an actor as it could happen that an actor does not get work for the next two years. Success is all about your popularity.

Rajshree Thakur (Saloni of Saat Phere)

"When renowned people from the industry appreciate my work, I feel good"

The first time I felt so was when people started saying: 'Look, she is Saloni' and when people came up to me and said: 'We watch your programme and we watch it for you. We really want to see you doing more work'. What was going through my mind at that time was: 'Ok, people have started recognising me'. I do not want to claim that I have made it big in the industry but when renowned people from the industry appreciate my work, I feel good. If you talk about materialistic happiness, I was very happy when I bought my first Vanity (van) (laughs). It was the high that came with buying something of my own that was related to my profession.

Juhi Parmar (Kumkum of Kumkum)

"When you get a title role, you have the confidence that: 'Okay, it's not just me, even others know that I am good'"

I feel I had arrived a long time back. It was when I got the title role of Shaheen and I was really appreciated for my performance in that show. I was just a couple of months old in this industry and I had got a title role! That gave me a sense of achievement, big enough for me to feel that I have arrived. When you get a title role, you have the confidence that: 'Okay, it's not just me, even others know that I am good'.

I think when everybody starts recognising you, be it in the industry or on the roads, you know that you have reached your audience. But true success is about creative satisfaction as well as recognition for your work. You can be anybody and earn money; you do not need to be an artiste. For me, it's when your art is recognised and people express their appreciation, that you feel 'I have arrived'.

Poonam Joshi exits Saat Phere

Poonam Joshi's character of Dr. Nishi in Saat Phere is going to get over soon. She plays the fiance of Nil in the show. We spoke to Poonam to find out more.

About her track, Poonam says, "It is the first time that I am playing a doctor in a show. The character of Nishi has quite interesting shades. However, it is a cameo of three months and there are only 15-20 days left for my schedule to get over so my track will end next month."

On her exit, she says, "The creative team is working on what to do with my character. It is a popular character and I am getting good responses for this role, as it is different from the regular saas-bahu characters. And there are strong chances that my track will comeback after some time considering the response."

Poonam says she wanted this break. "I am shooting for two dailies so it is a very tiring schedule. I cannot catch up with my friends or spend time with family. I will immediately go for a holiday though I have not planned anything."

About her role in Bhabhi, she says, "I play Rishika, sister-in-law of the female lead. Bhabhi's creative team always takes care of their track very well. This time as well they are making some creative changes. They improve the graph of the character very nicely."

Saat Phere track

The focus will be on Saloni as she has got back her memory. Nil rescued Saloni after her accident. Both Nishi and Nil took good care of Saloni when she lost her memory, since she was pregnant. As per the track, Nishi and Nil are going to get married soon but we have learnt that it is not going to take place in the near future.
