Amit as con man

Amit Dolawat who rose to fame as Kay Kay in Kesar is grinning from ear to ear. After the success of his last show Saat Phere as Sridhar, he's entered as Dev in Zee's Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan. And he is a happy man.

"It's a very different role. With my entry in the show there are many twists and turns lined up and I'm looking forward to the serial," says Amit

Elaborating on his character, he says, "Dev Singhania is a struggling actor who is hired by the four daughters in the house to con Pavitra (Jasvir Kaur). He is a tapori who keeps trying his luck in Bollywod. As I have just entered the show my character is still in the developing stages. Currently I'm playing the role of Prince who'll trap Pavitra and stop her from grabbing the property of the Garodia family."

What happened to your role in Main Aisi Kyun Hoon? "I was there for seven episodes but my look did not fit in with the character of Vickey. I was too young for it and thus opted out of the show," he quips.

Amit is content with the roles he has played until now. He's patient and willing to wait for a meaty role to come his way.

Kirti stands up for her hubby

Musical notes
Sharad and his cute wife Kirti Kelkar may not have done all that well in the second season of Nach Baliye. But there's no stopping them. Sharad, who realised he is a better singer than dancer, is currently busy crooning on Jjhoom India. While Sharad has a singer partner in Vaishali Samant for vocal training, Kirti is the one who motivates her hubby. "I buy CDs of all the old and latest songs and help Sharad select the right song which suits his voice," says Kirti who believes that Sharad is a fine singer. "He is a good singer and is working quite hard on his songs. He shoots during the day and rehearses at nights, and is putting in a lot of effort. Sadly, the judges are giving him low scores. It's unfair because doing a daily and a reality show simultaneously is not easy, they should consider that."

Rathods sing for a cause

Roop Kumar Rathod has teamed up with his singer wife Sonali for Mission Ustaad, which has A.R. Rehman and Lara Dutta as judges. The show which aims at promoting the UN's Millennium Development Goals has four celebrity singer jodis. "The idea behind the show is to entertain as well as spread social messages about women's education, poverty alleviation and employment for all. It is entertainment for a cause," says Roop kumar who is happy that he has his wife as partner. "One of the reasons for doing the show is Sonali. Other reasons are Rehman and the social cause the show supports. Though there are no eliminations, there is a voting system. It's easy to please the audience, but not rehman," he says.

Proxies rule Jjhoom India

Jjhoom India is one contest that changes its rules every week. The contestants, judges and viewers all are confused. Recently, Shabana Azmi, who is one of the judges, couldn't make it, so, Dimple Kapadia made an appearance on her behalf. Later, singer Lucky Ali came as a substitute for Vinod Rathod who was Roshni Chopra's mentor. A few weeks ago, Jolly Mukherjee replaced Zubin Garg to become Shama Sikander's partner. What's going on? Shekhar Suman says there are no set rules and therefore the confusion. "there should be a set of rules that one sticks to, but everything seems to be interchangeable on this show," he complains. "There is a sab chalta hai attitude which upsets me," he adds.

Jiji back in Saath Phere

If you have been wondering who is the cause of Saloni's miseries in Zee's Saat Phere, here's news for you. For once it's not Kaki or Kaveri. According to the grapevine, the troublemaker is none other Jiji, who has returned to the show. For the uninitiated, she was the surrogate mother to Brijesh and his wife's child. But when she wanted her sister's husband she was thrown out of the house. The track ended when she managed to escape along with the kid. Now that Saloni is pregnant, she turns up in the show to take her revenge. But Nivedita says, "I am not at liberty to say anything. If the producers ask me to come back to the show and if I like my track, I will."

Success changes many things:Rajshree

Rajshree (TOI Photo)
Rajshree Thakur is used to perfection.

After playing an affectionate wife and a caring daughter and bahu in Saat Phere , she suddenly has to contend with a turnaround in the script which has drawn out darker shades in her character.

"I knew that my character was very popular with audiences throughout the country and that they had got used to seeing me in a very positive light. While there has been a feedback in which people have asked for the serial to return to its original track, they have also reasoned it out that there must be a reason why I am shown behaving so," says Rajshree.

Is she afraid of being typecast as the good girl of television? "While I appreciate the fact that playing Saloni has brought me immense fame and goodwill, I would rather have my audience remember me as Rajshree Thakur, the actress. There's obviously life beyond Saloni and I am keen to explore other aspects of television," she chips in.

She strongly feels, "if Shah Rukh Khan could do a negative character in Darr and still emerge as a super hero, it underlines that fact that actors are versatile people and the more they explore characters and scripts, they experience growth."

She points out that she has been a newsreader once and that she would like to "anchor talk shows in the future. I also like reality television and would especially like to explore a music based show."

But perhaps the most fascinating part of Rajshree's acting career is that she has emerged as an idol for many Indian women who carry the burden of being 'dark skinned.' "I know that it is a very real issue to reckon with. Pick up any matrimonial page of a newspaper and you will never find an advertisement which asks for a 'lovely, dusky girl.' It's always a 'fair skinned bride.' Before I tasted success with Saat Phere, I had gone through many auditions in which I was politely told that I suited the role but for my dark skin," reveals Rajshree.

Does television still function in the dark ages? "Success changes a lot of things. But yes, you wouldn't find many dusky girls playing the lead. I was refused work in spite of having a good portfolio and screen presence because of my skin colour. Of course, it's a different story now but in that sense I can relate to those thousands of young girls in India who are directed towards fairness lotions and magic cures," says Rajshree.

At the moment though, Rajshree has had enough of adulation and yearns for spending time with her husband and in-laws. "Acting in a daily soap leaves you with very little time for anything else. If I have a free hour, I love to be home, eat home cooked food and be with my husband and his family." One more point in common with her screen avtar? "Yes, it seems so!," laughs Rajshree.

The essence of Jiji will remain: Nivedita Bhattacharya

Nivedita Bhattacharya, who had taken a sabbatical from television for eleven months is now back in 'Saat Phere', again. She has been keeping busy with theater and other work. Her character of Jiji was extremely popular. She tells us about Jiji and more.

Q. You are back in 'Saat Phere'. Have you come back to create havoc in Saloni's life?
A. Since I am back, there must be a good reason. Whatever it is, it will add to the element of drama in the show.

Q. Is your character the same?
A. See, it was never an out and out positive character. It had shades of grey, when I left the show. It is too early to comment, so we will just take it as it comes. There will definitely be a few twists and turns, but the essence of Jiji will remain.

Q. We heard that you had taken an 11-month break to concentrate on theater.
A. (surprised) Eleven months! I was not counting. I was out of 'Saat Phere', but I was busy with some other stuff. I did not have time to myself when I was doing a daily. It was a deliberate move, taking this break. I completed my dancing classes, which I had left halfway.

I did some theater work that was pending for some time, like Makrand Deshpande's 'Karodon Mein Ek', and Satyadev Dubey's 'Antigone' with Naseerudin Shah. Then I worked in a few films. I was out of 'Saat Phere', not out of acting.

Q. Will your look as Jiji remain the way it was earlier?
A. My look is already on air. It is slightly different from the earlier one. It cannot be drastically different, like I have got some plastic surgery done or something (laughs). The way of dressing has changed.

Q. Did you miss 'Saat Phere'?
A. I was in contact with the team throughout, and I went to every party related to the show. I was not on the sets, but I was in touch with everybody. I don't think I missed it much.

Q. Do you have a strong track now?
A. I am sure it will be a strong track.

Q. Your acting has always been appreciated. This show has given you a different identity. How do you feel about that?
A. Did it give me a different identity? The reason I do less work on television is that I look for good roles and characters that I think I can present differently. I chose the show, because I had not played a role like Jiji. I received positive feedback, and the experience with 'Saat Phere' has been good.

Q. What do you think makes the serial so popular?
A. I think it was the way it started. It dealt with the basic problems that someone with dark skin has, and all the twists and turns are to maintain the drama for the audience.

Q. Coming back must have been a reunion of sorts with old friends.
A. Yes, it will be. I have shooting for an independent track, and now I am waiting to shoot with them.

Q. Will we see you acting with your husband Kay Kay Menon soon?
A. That is something we will have to wait and watch for. There are no such plans at present. -Sonu Anand

Wedding bells for Chetanya

You are currently seeing him in Saath Phere and pretty soon Chetanya Adib (aka Kunjan Pratap Singh) will be taking the saat pheres in real life. The actor is set to marry his long time girlfriend Deepa.

"Till now we have been very busy buying and then furnishing our new home. Now that everything is done, it is time to get married and settled in life," the actor chirps.

Chetanya is also planning a romantic holiday with his lady love. And where would it be? He replies, "That is our secret but I will surely let you know once we are back," he says.

Lady luck seems to smiling upon him. There are gains for him in both personal and professional life. The actor, who is currently dubbing for the series Alice on Star World, will now also be lending his voice to one of the characters in the hit series Desperate Housewives.

"Dubbing popular English films and shows between the breaks are fun. It's an advantage to have a strong clear voice, clear diction and modulation ability," he concluded.

Sujoy Wadhwa (TOI Photo)
Not one or two, but producer Sunjoy Wadhwa has seven serials that will be going on air on various channels.

Seven surely is his lucky number he is beginning to believe. "First I thought it was a mere co-incidence but now, on second thoughts, I believe the number seven has proved very lucky for me so far," says Sunjoy. His current serial Saat Phere has won him a lot of appreciation. Will his seven other shows do the same? We'll have to wait and watch.

Saat Ka Chakkar
Rajshri Thakur, who has become a household name thanks to her character Saloni in Saat Phere, believes that the number seven is lucky for her.

The actress, who recently bought a new Maruti SX4, insisted that her new car have a number beginning with the number seven. She says, "My show Saat Phere has made me what I am today. The number seven is very important for me. It has proved lucky for me so many times in life. My husband Sanjyot Vaidya's birthday is also on the same date."

Although Rajshri needed the car to commute, she patiently waited for the desired number plate. She had paid the advance for the car a long time back, but the car took a lot of time to deliver.

She says, "I booked the car long ago but received it only recently. This is because I wanted the number plate beginning with seven only. I am not superstitious. I don't even have a fixation with numbers. It is just that the number seven is linked to many good things in my life." Rajshri does not how to drive, but she's game to learn. She adds, "For our first drive in the car, my husband took me to my maayka at Dahisar."

Saloni prepares for motherhood

Rajshree Vaidya aka Saloni of Saat Phere is spending a lot of time these days with kids as, later in the show, she will be seen playing mother to a 5-year-old adopted kid.

So, for the first time after wedding, she took a long vacation and went to her "Maayka" not just to meet her parents but also to do some research on how to handle kids.

While Rajshree felt it was too early to comment on the matter, a source confirmed, "She has visited various orphanages to observe how children behave, their mentality and stuff like that. Her experience was very good and now she is reading books related to child care and also watching movies. She was slightly worried to do this role earlier but finally agreed."

When will this track be introduced? "We are waiting to see the public's response to her accident and will decide things accordingly," the source reveals.

Currently in Saat Phere, Neel (Rakesh Bapat) is back but as an improved human being while Saloni's condition is critical.

Here's hoping Rajshree's hard work will help Saloni be a good mother.
