Saloni's sangeet natya
By: Tushar Joshi
December 9, 2006

We will have the haldi-mehendi and sangeet ceremonies a day before the wedding. I am excited but nervous as well. The only comforting thing is that Sanjot will be there to give me company. Song and dance routines are also fun to watch
—Rajshri Thakur
Saloni aka Rajashri Thakur in Zee's Saat Phere, has participated in several sangeet ceremonies. As for participating in a real-life sangeet ceremony it's going to be a first time for her! The actress, who will be tying the knot with Sanjot Vaidya in early February 2007, says, "Sanjot will be hosting it at his place.

We will have the haldi-mehendi and sangeet ceremonies a day before the wedding. I am excited but nervous as well. The only comforting thing is that Sanjot will be there to give me company. Song and dance routines are also fun to watch."

Surprise act

Sources close to the actress reveal that she is planning to surprise her beau with a solo performance. Reacting to this, she says, "At the moment nothing has been planned. But it's natural to have people singing and dancing at a ceremony like this!"

Still hunting for her reception outfit, Rajshri has now delegated the 'task' to Sanjot. "He has picked up something, but I still haven't had the time to see it."

Will she be inviting her Saath Phere co-stars for the wedding? "Of course! In fact, there's a joke between Sharad (Kelkar) and me where he keeps threatening to bunk my wedding if I don't attend his parties. So I have to make sure I don't upset him!"

Talking about her bond with Sharad's wife Keerti, she says, "I know her from the days since she was doing Kamal. Sharad became a friend only when they got married."

Filmi chakkar

Few know that prior to Saath Phere, Rajshri had also done a film called Havaa Aane De directed by Partho Sengupta, which is still awaiting a theatrical release. Says Rajshri, "It's an intense film that tackles issues like urban reality and the trials and tribulations of the middle class. I play the lead and the film is set against the backdrop of the Indo-Pak war. I have no clue what's happening with the film's release though."

"I sometimes design my own clothes" - Rajshri Thakur

The launch of Zee's girl next door - Saloni in Saat Phere, changed the destiny of debutant Rajshree Thakur. A thorough Mumbaikar, the actor harbored dreams of acting in films until she liked the story of her maiden show so much that she decided to keep her big screen plans on the backburner.

And since then her popularity has soared great heights. She has also bagged the prestigious Best Fresh Face of the Year - Female 2006 at the Sixth Indian Telly Awards.

And now she is all set to take the saath pheres even in real life. Come February, this simple and down-to-earth actor will get hitched to her long time beau.

Rajshree takes off time from her hectic schedules and trousseau shopping and shares with us the lighter side of her life by discussing fashion, films and more.

Movie mania
I am a complete film buff. I love to watch Hindi films and am particularly fond of Sharukh and Hrithik. Don was a treat to watch for its stylized treatment. I would also rate Rang De Basanti as one of the greatest movies in recent times.Hats off to the director.

Shopoholism
Whenever I get time off from shoots I just don't wait to shop. In-Orbit Mall in Malad is my favourite shopping destination. The ambience of the place is very inviting and has so much to offer in terms of choice.

Fashion Fundas
I don't like being trendy just for the sake of it. My style is a bit toned down in that sense. Indian traditional drapes attract me a lot. I also love wearing Ritu Kumar outfits. Nevetheless, I do wear western outfits keeping the occasion and comfort in mind.

Expensive Buys
My most expensive purchase so far has been a sari worth Rs 10,000. I am not obsessed with brands and I sometimes design my own clothes and usually spend between 5,000 to 6,000 bucks in doing so.

Books I love
Although I work for 13 hours a day and have little time to read, I still manage to skim over a few pages everyday. I am particularly fond of Paulo Coehlo's books. Currently I am reading one of his best sellers The Alchemist.

Been dare, done that...

Jasveer Kaur jumped from a three-storeyed building in Saat Phere, and ended up injuring her legs.

Ranjib Mazumder

Stunt woman: Jasveer Kaur
Jasveer Kaur aka Katari of Saath Phere has been severely injured while performing a dangerous stunt. The actress insisted on doing the stunt herself and ended up hurting her legs.

Jasveer says, "I have always done my own stunts even in other serials, because I know a body-double can never perform the stunts better than me. That day, I had to dance to a song, after which I was supposed to jump from the terrace of a three-storeyed building and run. My legs were already swollen after doing several retakes of the dance sequence. When I jumped from the terrace, I landed up on some wooden boxes and injured my legs. The pain was unbearable."

Jasveer adds, "I am a professional, and I prefer doing the stunts myself. I am suffering from an acute pain in my legs for the past one year. I am still undergoing treatment for the same. But, I am game for any stunt again."

Recreating history

Ashish Kapoor aka Dheer of Saat Phere, plays King Dipendra, in an international docu-drama on the Nepal royal massacre

Back to Section Stories

Sapana Patil Poojary

Ashish Kapoor as King Dipendra

Ashish Kapoor aka Dheer of Saat Phere is all set to don the role of King Dipendra, who allegedly gunned down most of the royal family members, in an international docu-drama based on the Nepal royal massacre.

The film showcases a true account of the June 1, 2001 tragedy and also deals with the mental condition of Dipendra at that time, which drove him to behave likewise. Ashish plays Dipendra, who was alleged of killing his family members during a get-together. Produced by a renowned English production house 3BM, and directed by Clive Maltby, the film is called Zero Hour - A Royal Massacre and will be screened on Discovery channel.

Ashish who has earlier worked in short films like Open Doors and War or Peace, says, "Working for this particular film was a great experience. This was the first time that I worked with a foreign crew. Plus it was a challenge to play a real life character that recently became a part of history. Dipendra is a complex character. An affable person to the world, he also had a wild side to him which would come to fore once in a while, but reached its zenith on the fateful night of June 1, 2001. I had to learn so much about Dipendra, like the way he conducted himself in real life."

Xmas Xtasy!

Santa Claus is on its way! The air is thickening with the festivities of Christmas and celebrations are on in full swing.

Here's how a few of our television stars perceive and savour Xmas as Prashant Golecha discovers.

Chetan Hansraj

First thought: Santa Claus and gifts

Celebrations: This is the best time of the year. My wife Lavinia is a Christian and we have recently shifted to a new house so it is as good as decorated, we normally do up our place during this festival. We already have a Christmas tree at home. I very occasionally visit the church too. When I was a kid I used to wait for Christmas.

Sharad Malhotra

First Thought: Red wine, cheese and Santa Claus

Celebrations: It's the time to party! The entire month of December is amazing especially from 25th to 31st which is the best week of every year. Back in Kolkatta we used to get a Christmas tree, decorate the house and attend Club parties. The nostalgic feeling is amazing! I do love to visit the church. Last year I attended the mid-night mass at Mount Mary Bandra and this year too if I pack up timely I will go there. I don't shop for Christmas but I do wear new clothes.

Poonam Gulati

First Thought:
Guava Cheese and Marzipan

Celebrations: As I have studied in a convent school, Christmas is a very special festival. In my early childhood I used to play baby Jesus and Bible was the first book that was gifted to me. I still go to Church near my home in Mahim. When something good happens in my life I go to Canossa convent church, which falls in my school campus. I do have an original Christmas tree in my house. Santa makes me nostalgic. Ideally at this time I would love to be in Finland and have a white snowy Christmas.

Dimple Inamdar

First Thought: Tons of happiness and fun

Celebrations:
I always look forward to this festival. I have been to churches in Goa and in Mumbai I do visit a church in Mahim sometimes on Wednesday. During Xmas, I don't indulge in special shopping. Ideally I would love to go to Canada to celebrate a white Christmas, there's no spirit as such in our city.

Narayani Shastri

First Thought:
Another festival like Diwali or Holi

Celebrations: Most of the time we either go out and party or stay at home. When I used to live in Colaba, we had people belonging to all religions residing in my building. So we used to celebrate Xmas and even visit the church. But now I have shifted base to Andheri and I don't even know my neighbours. I feel all festivals are a reason to celebrate in a cosmopolitan city like Mumbai.

Rajesh Kumar

First Thought:
A day for gaiety

Celebrations: I can't celebrate Christmas as TV actors don't get a holiday. In school days, it was one day of freedom and fun. Now it is like just any other day for me. I don't go to church, maybe during my school days I must have visited.

Juhi Parmar

First Thought: Lots of gifts

Celebrations: It's just a festival like other festivals - a happy occasion. And the best part is that the entire world celebrates it! I love to go to a church if I get the time and opportunity.

Poonam Joshi

First Thought:
Eating cakes and expecting gifts

Celebrations: Christmas is not typically my festival and I don't celebrate it much. But the very joyous and festive atmosphere kicks off the party mood. I always make it a point to go for a midnight mass every year, but this time because of my tight shoot schedules I may not go.

Twice bitten, thrice shy!

After Jai Santoshi Maa flopped miserably, Rakesh Bapat has accepted his defeat in films. He is all set to return to the small screen in Saat Phere

Back to Section Stories

Reena Thapar Kapoor

It seems Rakesh Bapat has learnt his lesson the hard way. After re-trying his luck on the big screen with Jai Santoshi Maa, which failed to create an impact at the box-office, the actor has decided to return to television.

Ab bas! Rakesh Bapat

Rakesh had quit Saat Phere to give his career in films a second chance after Tum Bin. Says Rakesh, "I decided to do some work on television. But I wanted to work on my own terms and conditions. Saat Phere was just the right project for me."

A hit show, popularity and money television gave Rakesh everything he desired. But he gave it all up for the silver screen. "I thought that Jai Santoshi Maa would change the scenario but unfortunately nothing happened as expected. My decision to return on the small screen has nothing to do with the debacle of Jai Santoshi Maa. Except for Don, none of the remakes of the old hit films have done well," he explains.

The good Samaritan Neil in Saat Phere is all set to make his appearance in the show next week. Revealing more about his character, Rakesh informs, "The character has undergone a drastic change in the show. Neil will be seen as a negative character who will try to bring about a rift between Saloni and Nahar."

This is the first time that Rakesh will don a negative avatar. Is he nervous? "I don't know?" he shrugs. "But I'm anxious to the get the feedbacks soon."

So has he bid good bye to films? "I am getting film offers, but I'd rather do a good TV show than a bad film," says Rakesh. Although he will be doing Saat Phere, the actor says that he isn't looking for more work on TV. "At the moment I'm not interested in any other TV show. I can't see myself getting into the monotonous saas-bahu trap."

'Gateway of India represents Mumbai'
Shameem Khan

Rajshree Thakur
TV actor

ROTI

My favourite rasta food: Bhelpuri, pani-puri and kulfi.

My favourite restaurant: Urban Tadka – I dig their mutton raan and biryani. Also, Gajalee – the pomfret fry and seekh kababs are delicious.

My favourite nightspot: Brew in Juhu. I often go there with my fianc because we love the ambience.

The most expensive meal I've had: Was at The Taj. We had breakfast and everything from the coffee to the fruit custard was exorbitantly priced.

The restaurant with the most value for money: Urban Tadka.

KAPDA

I shop mostly at: Infinity at Inorbit Mall. I get a whole bunch of brands to choose from there, especially my Pepe Jeans. Also Fabindia is a good place to buy quality stuff at reasonable rates.

My favourite rasta shopping area: Lokhandwala and Linking Road. I love the variety of shoes, bags and household items that I can pick up at Lokhandwala.

My favourite Indian designer: Ritu Kumar.

The sale I never miss: Woodland shoes, Westside and Shoppers' Stop for my clothes. Plus the exhibitions at the Bandra-Kurla complex are a must check-out.

The cheapest thing I've bought: A pair of mojris from Linking Road for a mere 100 rupees.

MAKAAN

My favourite place in Mumbai: That would be Andheri – easy to commute to work and all the essentials are close by. Also my fianc lives there, so it's special.

The one place that holds fondest memories for me: My college, Dahanu college, in Vile Parle. I now guide the students in drama rehearsals that we fondly took part in as students.

The most aesthetic structure in Mumbai: Gateway of India. It's like an entrance to Mumbai and represents Mumbai to anyone new in the city. There's a British feel to the place yet it's very Indian in its essence.

Mumbai's biggest eyesore: The condition of its roads!
