Ashish Kapoor is on a high!

The unmissable Dheer Kunwarsa of Saat Phere on Zee TV, Ashish Kapoor, is maha thrilled as two of his films are going to be screened at two different film fests, in the coming days.

The actor who is packing his bags to Goa is all smiles as he says, "Yes, I am invited to attend the Goa Film Festival where my short film with Rhea Pillai, War or Peace will be shown. It is a film based on the futility of war."

Ashish Kapoor with Tisca Chopra in a scene from Open Doors

Ashish speaks elatedly about visiting Pakistan "Open Door is another short film where I have co-starred with Tisca Chopra and it is going to be screened at Kara Film Festival at Karachi."

If all this is not exciting enough, the actor with grey shades has one more in his kitty as he eagerly awaits the release of the docu-drama The Last Party, "It is based on the infamous Nepal royal family massacre and I play the lead role of Prince Deependra."

Now that Jhuma's character is out of the serial, Dheer's track who had an on-the-side affair with the servant as the ghar-jamai on Saat Phere is not doing much other than instigating Urvashi Jisa (Nivedita) the second wife of Brijesh (Akshay Anand) and providing info to Kaveri (Aanchal Dwivedi), the scheming vamp of the daily soap.

No wonder then that Ashish has enough time on hands to promote the short films he has acted in!

Two ceremonies and lot of controversies
By: Shaheen Parkar and Vickey Lalwani
November 27, 2006

'SONY' KUDI: Aamna Shariff at the Indian Telly Awards
The Indian Telly Awards was held at the Chitrakut Grounds on Friday, while the Hero Honda Indian Television Awards (HHITA) was held on Saturday at Bhavan's College over the weekend. As usual, there was the round of applause and a fair share of hiccups. Here's the dope on what happened.

Aamna: No thanks!

Sony's chief creative director Sandiip Sikcand, who has been allegedly poaching actors from the Balaji fold, sent the audience home grinning. He escorted Aamna Shariff hand-in-hand as the curtains came down at the Indian Telly Awards.

THERE GOES MY AWARD: Smriti with hubby Zubin Iraani at the HHITA event
This should come as no surprise, since Aamna has been in talks with Sikcand for a new show on Sony. It is now clear that Aamna's deal with Sony has been locked, sealed and delivered. And hey, what did Aamna mean by saying 'Thank you, Sony' when she got the Best Actress award? Doesn't she know that KTH airs on Star Plus, not Sony? We wonder what Star honchos Sameer Nair and Deepak Sehgal have to say about this faux pas (or was it a deliberate attempt to snub Star?).

Ekta ke kapde!

THAT'S MINE! Ekta Kapoor at the Indian Telly Awards
The Balaji czarina turned up at the Indian Telly Awards in black alright, but several eyebrows were raised over her choice of outfit: a flouncy black skirt and a seriously casual top that would look best over PJs.

Some bitchy actresses were overheard saying they were shocked at how Kapoor came dressed so casually to the awards ceremony!

No Balaji brigade

There was a buzz doing the rounds at the Indian Telly Awards on Friday that Balaji actors had been given instructions not to attend the HHITA event the following day.

Am only 'SARI'NADING: Kunika at the HHITA awards
Apparently, Madam Kapoor and HHITA's Anu Ranjan had a tu-tu-main-main, hence the directives from the boss. But a few Balaji actors did turn up, nevertheless (read: winners performers and the rebels).

Special treatment

Though there were several producers present, Ekta Kapoor, Rajeev Shukla and wife Anuradha Prasad were given special treatment at the Indian Telly Awards. Now you know who matters and who doesn't!

Juhi-Anuj: Thanda

PEHCHAAN KAUN? Rajshri Thakur at the Indian Telly Awards

Juhi Parmar and Anuj Saxena hosted the final segment of the Indian Telly Awards but their warm vibes could not be seen on stage.

It looked like Anuj was having a bad day, as he fumbled and kept wiping his face with a hanky (blame it on the humidity?).

Earlier in the evening, there were hiccups in the make-up van when Anuj realised that his clothes were not ready.

Apparently, one of the staff had to run over to the nearby Apna Bazar to buy an iron! Certainly pressing problems for Anuj!

Vamp take

CAN YOU BELIEVE I JUST BAGGED AN AWARD! Rohit Roy with wife Manasi at the HHITA ceremony
When Achint Kaur's name was announced at the HHITA Awards for Best Actress in a Negative Role, it took everyone by surprise.

Everyone felt Anchal Dwivedi deserved it for Saat Phere. It must have taken even Achint by surprise, since she was not present to collect the award.

Kunika went on stage to accept the trophy on her behalf, and was mistaken for Achint by Ranvir Shourie!

Chehra pe chehra

The HHITA Awards GR8! Face Of the Year (Male) Award was bagged by Hussain Kuwajerwala and GR8! Face Of The Year (Female) by Mandira Bedi.

Both have been around for ages, so we're still wondering why these two were selected when there are plenty of fresh faces around!

Kya bolti Rajshri?

Rajshri Thakur, who bagged the Best Popular Actress award at the HHITA, turned up in a bizarre outfit and could not speak a single line correctly. Some bitchy actresses commented that even their domestic helps look better! Ouch!

Best for what?

Rohit Roy bagged the Best Popular Actor award for Virasaat. This was a huge surprise and even Rohit appeared a tad uncomfy, leaving the stage in a hurry.

WRONG TRACK: Shveta Salve
Wrong track!

Shveta Salve paid a tribute to Helen by performing on the dancing queen's old hits numbers at the HHITA, but it seems the show's producers were a little confused over their choice of tracks.

Shveta actually performed to Mera naam hai Shabbo… pyar se mujhe Shabnam kehte hain (originally performed by Bindu) in her tribute!

WHO'S THAT BESIDE ME? Asha Parekh at the HHITA
Kissa kursi ka

It was surprising to see star sublet Munisha Khatwani plonk herself next to veteran actress

Asha Parekh at the HHITA event. Was it because the cameras were certain to zoom in on Parekh?

The yesteryear actress didn't even exchange a word with Khatwani!

My Character & I
By: Shaheen Parkar
November 28, 2006

Mazher Sayedd
Samar is a doting brother and a henpecked husband.

Yes, he is basically a weak man who gets easily manipulated by those around him. He is one of those guys who want to keep everyone happy.

Your wife Kaveri (Aanchal Dwivedi) is the reason for all the problems.
Samar knows that Kaveri is up to mischief but he does not realise how far she can go to create havoc in the lives of his family members. He has reprimanded her in the past but she always sweet-talks her way out. Samar is madly in love so he lets her be. Kaveri knows how to camouflage all her wheeling-dealings perfectly. She can't see others being happy. Kaveri knows about my special affections for my sister Saloni. Even the rest of the family adore her. This gives Kaveri an added impetus to mess up Saloni's life.

In the past there was a confrontation between Samar and Kaveri, where he slaps her.
Yes, that was one point when Samar lost his cool and given her a resounding slap. He realised what she was up to, but even then she wriggled out of the situation by her smart talk.

At the moment, Samar has turned blind.
Yes, he has lost his eyesight after a mishap during Diwali. He was badly injured after bursting firecrackers. He is now in a hapless situation and even more dependent on Kaveri. To add to his dilemma, Kaveri is now on her own trip. Previously, he preferred to turn a blind eye to his wife's doings, now he cannot even see what is happening. Samar is on a self-pitying trip and blames himself for the financial mess in the household.

Are there Samars in the real world?
Of course, there are plenty of husbands who don't know what their wives are up to or rather pretend not to know, as it will only make matters worse.

Eyes wide shut!

Actor Mazher Sayeed, aka Samar in Saat Phere, keeps his eyes closed to give a realistic performance of a blind man

Back to Section Stories

Reena Thapar Kapoor

Getting real: Mazher Sayeed
Actor Mazher Sayeed is having a tough time looking into the eyes of his co-actors. No, there hasn't been any dictat from girlfriend Mouli Ganguly. The actor is trying to give a realistic portrayal of a blind man in Saat Phere. The actor insists on keeping his eyes shut when he is on the sets of Saat Phere, to get under the skin of his character. Says Mazher, "Samar has now gone blind in the show and playing a blind character is really taking its toll on me."

According to unit members present on the sets, Mazher would often complain that he isn't doing justice to the character and he'd end up looking straight into the eyes of actor standing next to him while delivering the dialogues.

But now Mazher has found the solution to this problem. The actor has decided to keep his eyes shut and get about on the sets by feeling his way around. He doesn't open his eyes even when he isn't shooting. "I keep my eyes shut before and after my shots," he says.

Mazher says that this 'method acting' has been working for him. "I wear dark glasses on screen, so no one can notice my closed eyes. Initially, keeping my eyes shut was difficult for me. I'd stumble and hurt myself but thankfully I didn't have any major mishap. But it did help me to sharpen my other senses and now I can actually relate to a blind man," Mazher says.

Mazher says that his co-stars and colleagues tease him about being inspired by Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black. "There isn't an iota of truth in this statement. I'm playing the blind Samar, the way I perceive him. I still have a long way to go before I match up to the performances in Black," he says.

Akshay Sethi is making his debut as heroine Saloni's love interest in the super hit show Saat Phere — Saloni Ka Safar. Here, he talks about his first brush with television and how he plans to withstand competition from Nahar Singh aka Sharad Kelkar. The truth is he hasn't got much of a positive feedback from the general people as such vis--vis his character which has to deal with the biggies. But the confident Akshay doesn't think so. He is all kicked up and raring to go. Call it over confidence or whatever he is sure he will not be blown away.

Q Saat Phere is doing extremely well. How does it feel to be associated with it and that too opposite the main lead Saloni?
It feels really great. I am very lucky to start my career with this show. The role which I have got to play is good and that too as a romantic lead. What more can I ask for?

Q How did you bag this role?
I have done a lot of commercials. After seeing one of my ads, a creative guy from Zee called me up for an audition. And here I am.

Q Other than ads, have you done anything on the acting front like theatre, etc?
I just did my acting course from Kishore Namit Kapoor's Acting Academy.

Q Tell us a little about your background?
In fact I belong to an acting background. My father is a producer and has produced films like Jai Santoshi Maa. Since childhood, I wanted to become an actor. But I had to wait till I completed my graduation to start my acting career as my parents always gave preference to education.

Q When did you realise that there exists an actor in you?
I feel there is an actor in everybody. If a guy is serious about the profession, he can act. But he has to love his work.

Q How much of Akshay do you see in your character Yug?
Very honestly, Yug is a very cool and an extroverted kind of a guy. I, on my part, am an introvert by nature and hardly interact with people. I live a very simple life. The only thing common between both Akshay and Yug is that both are very focused and confident when it comes to work.

Q Every other celebrity is superstitions about something or the other! Your superstition is…
My parents keep telling me to wear diamond rings. One of my friends even asked me to change my name. But seriously speaking, I am not superstitious about life. Nobody can stop your success once you are determined enough to get it.

Q Sharad Kelkar will be your romantic rival. He is extremely popular and good looking. Do you feel it would be a tough competition?
No, I never felt that way. He is my senior and always advises me. He's a great guy.

Saloni on a hunt for the perfect sharara
By: Tushar Joshi
December 2, 2006

Dress dilemma: Rajshri Thakur

Her wedding is barely two months away, but Rajshri Thakur is still to shortlist an outfit for her wedding reception.

The actress was recently spotted at Ritu Kumar's store looking for an appropriate sharara, so we called to check how the hunt was progressing.

Says Rajshri, "I'm still on the look out for the perfect outfit, since I didn't buy anything from Ritu Kumar's store.

I looked at a couple of outfits but I think I'll now get one stitched rather than pick up a readymade one."

Nauvari natak!

The biggest hindrance in her attempt to get an outfit is the approaching deadline. "Everyone I have met is asking for more time. The minimum time it takes to stitch the outfit I want is three months. I don't have so much time on hand! I hope I find some one who can help me out."

Immensely fond of shades of reds and pinks, she says, "Red will be the colour of my sharara. Other than that, I just want the dress to fit me well."
When asked if she has approached any designers, she says, "Not yet, but I will start getting in touch with them soon."

Planned in typical Maharashtrian style, Rajshri wants to wear the traditional nine-yard (nauvari) sari at the main wedding ceremony. "It isn't easy to wear or carry off, but I would love to try it. It will be a simple ceremony with all the customs and rituals."

Work wise

After taking home not one, but two Best Actor trophies in popular categories at two awards ceremonies last weekend, Rajshri couldn't sleep after going home. "It was the most incredible and unbelievable feeling. I never imagined I'd win any awards, even though I know the show and my character are very popular," she says.

Giving credit to her unit, Thakur even took sweets and her two trophies to the Saath Phere set. "Everyone, from the technicians to my co-stars, is equally responsible for the win so why not celebrate with them?"

Still undecided about her honeymoon destination, the actress says she prefers travelling across India rather than going abroad. "I hate long-distance journeys so going abroad is out. I'd love to go to Kulu Manali, though. Let's see. We've got time to plan since we've postponed our honeymoon to March so that work doesn't suffer."

"I did think about why I was not even nominated"

The Gwalior guy - Sharad Kelkar, was a Grasim Mr India finalist; an MBA in marketing and is now recognised as the undisputed hunk of two Zee TV serials - Sindoor and Saat Phere. His journey into showbiz began with advertising. A small cameo in the offbeat National Award-winning Marathi film, Uttarayan, whetted his appetite and he started doing the rounds of production houses.

A cop's role in Akrosh, a few episodes in Bhabhi and Sharad's television innings was off to a good start. Along the way he met and married TV actor, Keerti Gaekwad. The twosome romanced as an on-screen couple in Sindoor, but it was in Nach Baliye 2 that this duo got to exhibit their chemistry which also got them 'the cutest couple' title.

In a free wheeling chat with Prashant Golecha, Sharad talks about his journey till now.

"Nahar is quite like me"

Did it pinch that unlike your co-star Rajshree Thakur (Saloni) you weren't nominated for any awards this year?
I did think about why I was not even nominated. But then I consoled myself saying maybe next year I'll win an award! After all I will be an actor all my life now. Moreover, I also believe that if you can recognition in form of awards, success often goes to one's head. People appreciate me so much that awards don't matter that much.

What has been the response to your character Nahar, in Saat Phere?
The credit for the success of Nahar and show goes to the writer. I fitted the bill for the role.

How much do you relate to Nahar?
Nahar is quite like me, he loves his wife and family just like I do. But he's also a bit short tempered which I'm not. I have lots of patience and I'm a total extrovert.

Was it easy getting Saat Phere?
In a way it was, though I had been struggling for few months. It was actually Shweta Kawaatra who was instrumental in me getting Saat Phere. It was she who informed me that the casting was on so I should give an audition, which I did and was soon selected. Although I had to also give a lot of look tests for the role. Manav and Shweta are our good friends.

"Good looks are vital in today's times"

Which is the first show you actually shot for, Saat Phere or Sindoor?
I actually shot for a pilot for Kuuch Dil Mein Hai. But I had a dialogue delivery problem and I couldn't deliver the goods, so I was replaced. In June 2005 I got married and within seven days of marriage I took up Saat Phere. But it was for Sindoor that I shot first.

Do you think your wife Keerti is lucky for you?
Of course, It's she who taught me basics of acting, how to face the camera and improvise on my dialogues.

Does having a spouse in the same profession help?
Yes it does. If your partner is a house wife, once you're home she will ask all about what happened on the sets. Whereas since my wife is an actress we don't talk or discuss work at home. Also, she perfectly understands my erratic shooting schedules and the industry. We prefer to spend time with each other.

Are good looks an important criteria for being a successful TV actor?
In today's times it is vital. The fan following of actors is more than the characters they essay.

"My wife Keerti has taught me the basics of acting"

After a stint in films, though in Marathi, do you aim for Bollywood now?
No one has approached me for Hindi films nor have I approached anybody. When I have lived up to my responsibilities I will think about it.

Any passion other than acting?
I used to be fond of singing to some extent at one point of time. I even thought of considering it as a career option.

Who are your closest pals in this industry?
My friend's list includes Manav and Shwetta, Sachin Shroff, Rahul Lohani, and Shabbir Ahluwalia. And yes, not to forget the Saat Phere and Sindoor co-stars.

What are your immediate future plans?
My current priority is to buy a big house.

Saat Phere, producer ka suffer

Saloni lost five kilos after an illness. No problem, except that her weight loss cost the producers of Saat Phere Rs 4 lakh!

Life hasn't been too good to Rajshri Thakur (Saloni in Saat Phere) of late. First, her illness kept her away from work and now it is her wedding in February which is keeping her on her toes. As a result of all the running around, Rajshri has lost about five kilos. Her colleagues insist that she looks anorexic these days. "Rajshri has always been skinny, over and above which she has lost weight. We always talk about how little she eats," says a co-star.

Interestingly, her weight loss has created a huge problem on the sets of Saat Phere. The production team had to run around to redo a lot of things to adjust to a thinner Rajshri. Firstly, they had to arrange for a new body double for the actress, one who is much thinner too. Organising a body double at a moment's notice is difficult. They also had to re-make her expensive costumes. "We had to desperately look for a body double as Rajshri has only been doing close-ups for almost a month. The rest of the episodes are being managed with the body double. The audition for a new body double itself cost us a fortune. After that we had to work on the double's hair, body language, etc, which cost a lot too," informs a production team member.

In all the production house claims to have spent a whopping Rs 4 lakh, to accommodate all the changes. "Every actor has a body double who are chosen after auditions. We had to change Rajshri's body double as she looks really thin now," says Abdul Karim, executive producer of Saat Phere.

When Rajshri resumed work, the loss of weight showed on screen and this put the production house in a quandary. "These things put the schedule of Saat Phere off track. We had to re-do her clothes that required a lot of running around," says Abdul Karim.

When contacted, Rajshri said, "I was advised bed rest after I came back from the hospital (the actress suffered from dengue recently). Normally people put on weight after convalescing from an illness, but it didn't happen in my case. I lost a lot of weight, instead."

Time to tie the marital knot!

It's raining weddings this year and also early next year for many actors from Tellydom. Actors are getting hitched to their long time beau's soon and for many the destination happens to be Delhi for the wedding. Many plan to tie the knot in style and of course continue with their acting careers side by side only to take a quick break for their honeymoon.
Kavita Shyam spoke to some of the actor brides and bridegrooms…

Roshni Chopra is getting married on 10 December in Delhi with her beau of eight

years Siddharth (Film maker by profession). Roshni will continue to work post marriage and will take a break to hit Paris and Prague early next year for their honeymoon.
It's been a really long, hectic week and will continue to be so till 13 December. Yesterday I had Sangeet (which had a Morroccon theme and took place at a farm house) and it went on till early morning. I am completely exhausted and today we will have sangeet from the bridegroom's side. From 1 December there have been many functions at home like the dholki night, kirtan and we have been practicing dance every night with cousins and friends. We have the mehendi ceremony left which will have all women coming in to bless me and then the chuda ceremony followed by the big event.

Gourav Chanana marries his lady love of one and a half years, Loveleen on 10

December in Delhi. Gourav is planning to take off to Kerala or the North East for a honeymoon and be back in the city of dreams by 24 December.
I am busy shopping for the wedding and needless to say it's been a hectic month. We decided for marriage in October and soon after the preparations started. We have been shopping for clothes and running around for sending the invites to family and friends along with arranging for their accommodations and transport. I am looking forward to the Sangeet, the wedding and the reception, but at the same time I am excited, tired and nervous.

Rajashree Thakur gets married in February to her fianc, Sanjyot Vaidya whom she has known for four years now. The wedding takes place in Mumbai in a typical Maharashtrian fashion and her parents have already done the bookings for the wedding venue.
I have already shopped for saris for my relatives who plan to come down to Mumbai three days prior to the wedding.
From next week, I plan to start shopping for myself which would include the wedding outfit (sharara) and yellow paithani or kanjivaram sari. I will take ten days off before my wedding and plan for a honeymoon in March by which time I will have finished a chunk pf my work also. I am nervous, excited with very little time left for the preparations.

Amit Tandon is looking foward for a big fat Punjabi wedding! "We will have all five functions, mata ki chowki, sangeet, engagemant, marriage and reception. I am all charged up for that!" affirms Amit.

For Suhasi Goradia, getting married to her gujju man in a Gujrathi style in January

."They are busy shopping for me. As I am working 12 hours a day, it's between shots that I accompany them," smiles an excited Suhasi who is on the verge of completion of her trousseau shopping.
