"Saat Phere has got me success and fame in a short time"

She plays the vicious Kaveri in Zee's TRP raker Saat Phere. Meet, Aanchal Dwivedi, who is currently winning accolades for her evil histrionics, coupled with her vampish makeup and garish sarees.
This small town girl from Itawa, came to Mumbai in search of her dream career. About two years back, Aanchal was seen on the tube in Sahara One's Humse Hai Zamaana and Kuuch Love Kuuch Masti. Later, she did Ken Ghosh's Ada. Currently, the pesky actor is also being seen in a comic act on Sab's Lets Party.
Here, in an exclusive chat, Aanchal talks bout her negative role in Saat Phere and also about her alleged affair with actor Vishal Kotian.

So, tell us how did Saat Phere happen?.
Not too many people know but I am related to Pallavi Joshi and Vivek Agnihotri who happen to be my Chaachi and Chacha. I lived with them for a year. When I told them about my desire to get into acting, Pallavi Chachi advised me to start going for auditions. For one long year, I gave a lot of auditions but nothing happened. Then two years back I did Humse Hai Zamaana on Sahara and Kuuch Love Kuuch Masti and later did Ken Ghosh's Ada. On the last day of the shoot I was on my way back home and was thinking what I will do now and I received a call from the makers of Saat Phere. Just after one and a half hour later I got a call that I was in for the role of Kaveri.

How far do you relate to Kaveri?
I don't relate to Kaveri at all. In real life, I am a very down to earth person. Sometimes, I feel Kaveri has no reasons for whatever she does. Yet, when on screen when I essay the character, I feel totally evil.

What kind of feedback have you received from viewers?
Saat Phere is my first daily and has got me success and fame in a short period. When I bump into people who watch the show, they tell me my performance is good. Recently, when I went to Aurangabad women wanted to know all about my sarees, hair and make up. Somehow, noone has really behaved negative towards me.

How is Mazher Syedd as a co-star?
He is a brat. He pulls my leg all the time. He hides outside the make up van trying out stunts to scare me. The entire unit is like a family and we spend at least thirteen hours together.

You are also doing a comedy Let's Party?
Ya, it's a weekly on Sab TV. I am playing a lively girl. Dilip Joshi is paired opposite me. It is interesting to do a comedy and a negative character simultaneously.

Would you do a typical saas bahu soap?
Why not? In fact, I would love to do it. I think, the genre has a lot of potential. But, Balaji hasn't approached me as yet. If they offer me a good role, I would like to work for them.

What would you have been, if not an actress?
I would have been doing something related to forest life. I am very much fascinated by forests.
I love to watch National Geographic. When I turn 35 or so I would like to go and live in the forests and make films on animals.

Are you tuned into reality shows? Have you been watching Nach Baliye 2 or Jhalak Dikhhla Ja?
I am more tuned into Naach Baliye 2. I think its more performance based whereas Jhalak is just more loads of fun.

Are you seeing Vishal Kotiyan?
No, I am not seeing Vishal. I have known him for the last few years. We were to do a play together which didn't happen. When I started doing Saat Phere he asked me if I would like to act in Let's Party and I agreed and people jumped to their own conclusions

Describe your dream man?
He should be a family man and should appreciate hard work and my career. So, I don't have great expectations but I am a normal person looking for a normal person.

Do you have any Godfather?
Not really a Godfather, but my father Suresh Dwivedi has been a great source of inspiration for me. I have two brothers yet my father says my beti is my beta. I am here because of him.

Saloni drives shaadi ki gaadi

Rajshri Thakur

On screen, she plays a dark-skinned girl struggling to overcome bias and create her own identity.

Off screen, Rajshri Thakur is propagating the same grit and determination. On the first anniversary of the Zee show Saat Phere recently, the actress promoted an initiative in support of girls who are discriminated on the basis of their skin colour.

Good cause

Giving details about the initiative, Rajshri said, "I represent this initiative that has been taken by Zee.

It's a big deal when a viewer tells me that she can relate to Saloni and her problems. I receive numerous emails from people all over the country telling me that they were victimised because of their dark skin, but after Saat Phere things have changed. Sometimes, I'm surprised how people can take a television character so seriously, but if it helps someone make their life better, why not?"

Appealing to NGOs to come forward and assist in the cause, Rajshri said, "There are thousands of girls in our country who have a problem getting married, probably due to circumstances that are beyond their control. It's a serious problem and needs to be taken up by those who are in a position to help."

On the personal front, Rajshri had a rocking Diwali. "I ate lots of sweets and traditional Maharashtrian goodies. In fact, my mom insisted that I carry a tiffin full of these goodies for the other actors on the set. I love karanjis, though I'm not too keen on making them myself."

All set to get married next year, did she get any gifts from her fianc, Sanjot Vaidya? "Yes, he got me two, very pretty dresses. Also, I took out some time to draw a Rangoli and light up the house with diyas."

Rakesh Bapat admires producer Sunjoy Wadhwa but refuses to work any further in his show Saat Phere.

The actor is quitting the show mainly because he has prior commitments to follow and is also not too happy playing the character Neel in the show. "Somehow, I've reached a stage where I fail to derive any creative satisfaction from my character in Saat Phere. The track went well for a long time but somehow there isn't much for me to do in the show. Also, I cannot connect with Neel as a person. I am really not blaming anyone for this. This is the way television functions here, though I'd love to work with Sunjoy in future," says Rakesh who will shoot for ten more days for the show.

Rakesh had taken a break from Saat Phere for one month when he was busy shooting for his film Jai Santoshi Maa. Later, he started shooting again from July so that his character gets terminated from the show in a proper fashion.

The actor is currently gearing up for a Canadian film titled If I Could Love You More produced by Canadian Film Association and directed by Pasha John. "I am the only Asian Indian guy in the film along with other Canadian and American actors. It's a love triangle and I play Sahil, an Indian guy. They wanted a fresh face to play the character, so they called me. I was touched when they narrated the story and needless to say it's a beautiful role," smiles the actor who will go to Canada in November for one and a half months to shoot for the film.

Apart from his professional life, things are also looking up for Rakesh on the personal front. He celebrated his birthday in Pune on 1 September at a friend's farmhouse. "I drove down to Pune to seek my parent's blessings. Also, I was pleasantly surprised when my friends threw a surprise party for me on a beautiful rainy day.," adds the Pune bred actor who is looking forward to the release of his film Jai Santoshi Maa in September.

Not many know that the actor is dating a film actress for the past six months and is taking time out to know her better. Though he refuses to reveal who his lady love is, all he says is, " I met her on the sets of a film about six months ago. We're just getting to know each other and as of now nothing is fixed." So, looks like the actor is obviously not ready for the Saat Phere in his life?

New faces rule the roost

By Sneha Hazarika / Alok Hisaria

Dada Saheb Phalke, Raj Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Satyajit Ray, Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachhan, Aamir Khan — the list of legends and living legends in the world of films is endless. However there is no such rule applicable in the world of television. There is not one particular actor who has an image beyond a particular character even if it's a big name as Smriti Iraani, Ronit Roy or Sangeeta Ghosh. In the world of television it's the character that is big and not the actor.

Therefore, serials like Sarrkkar, Viraasat, Devi, Rabba Ishq Na Hove, Kaalchakra, Saathiya, Thodi si Zameen Thoda sa Aasman etc haven't fared well in spite of the presence of stars in lead roles. Maybe that's the reason why the producers and the channels don't mind introducing new faces in strong characters and big budget serials.

"Nobody is permanent in the television world. The act can be permanent but the actor isn't. I myself have introduced many fresh faces on television like Renuka Shahane, Raju Kher, etc. Where are they today," says veteran producer-director Ravi Rai. Another veteran producer Dheeraj Kumar too feels the same. "Television stars have got a small life. I had done a film with Rekhaji in December 1969 called Raaton Ka Raja . And you can see that Rekhaji and Amitabhj are still working in films. But in TV things like that don't happen," says Dheeraj Kumar.

This explains the sea of new faces seen every year in serials like Saat Phere, Kasamh Se, Ek Ladki Anjaani Si and the more recent Paraya Dhan, Betiyaan, Saathi Re and Solah Sringar. Sanjay Wadhwa, the producer of the hit soap Saat Phere who also produces Paraya Dhan and Saathi Re explains in a one liner, "Everything has its value for a certain time only." He has his successful track record of hitting the jackpot in Saat Phere with the unconventional new actress Rajshri Thakur and trying to repeat the magic with Gauri Nigudkar and Parakh Madan in Paraya Dhan and Saathi Re respectively.

Director Hemant Prabhu, the maker of the Sahara serial Sati also tried to follow the trend by making his actress wife Mansi Salvi appear in the lead role in a completely new avatar. After losing oodles of fat and with better make up and grooming, Mansi was almost unrecognisable.

"Marketing is an integral part of the television industry. If the channel's marketing team finds a new face they would promote him or her. Even viewers like seeing new fresh faces on television. Once an actor signs a daily soap, he/she is all over the newspapers. The media follows him everywhere. Which gym he goes to, which restaurants he likes to visit, everything is being reported. Obviously the more you see a face, the interest level in that particular person falls down after some time. As for me Mansi's new look helped to incite curiosity in Sati initially. She was like a complete new package," says Prabhu.

Well, it's another story that Sati still hasn't done that well. It looks like, if all goes well, a TV star shines only in his debut serial. "A film can be a hit because of Shah Rukh Khan. But television is basically recognised by a banner, like Ekta Kapoor's serials come with a certain promise. In television the actors are not known by their acting skills but by the production houses they associate with. The best example of this is Mihir (Amar Upadhya). Everybody knows what happened to him once he developed a fake belief that Kyunki Saans Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is a hit due to him. He is not to bee seen anywhere now," explains Ravi Rai.

Weighty Issues

Rajshri Thakur wants to gain some weight before she gets married by the end of this year

Here comes the bride: Rajshri Thakur

While other actresses are struggling to lose weight, Rajshri Thakur aka Saloni of Saat Phere is one actress who wants to gain some weight. The lady who is gearing up for her wedding day this year , says that it was on her mother's insistence that she agreed to put on a few extra pounds so that she looks healthier. "I have a long face and it looks longer if I lose too much weight," says Rajshri. What has also not helped Rajshri put on weight is the long and stressful shooting hours. Rajshri's weight loss had become a matter of great concern for her mother. Now, the actress has been following a strict diet prescribed by her mother: a glass of banana milkshake, a few almonds and greasy paranthas," Rajshri says.

Matchmaker
Zee's Saat Phere is completing a year and its main protagonist Saloni alongwith Zee has decided to play matchmaker for girls like her. That is those girls who face problems in getting married on account of colour discrimination, lack of monetary support and illiteracy. Saloni will seek the help of NGOs in getting as many girls married as possible. Laudable indeed.

Vamps sting with a difference

Just when telly soaps seemed to be saturated with flashy, over the top, vampish characters namely, Komalika, Ramola Sikand, Pallavi ….there seems to be a rising crop of hatke evil ladies who slowly but surely are on their way to redefine the 'vamps of the small screen'.

They have tried to strip away the layers of artificiality - from the garish greasepaint, from hamming their acerbic lines, from donning retina-pinching outfits and from air talking!

We are talking about the new age vamps - Sindoora of Banu Main Teri Dulhan, Maya of Karam Apna Apna, Kaveri of Saat Phere, Barnali of Kasamh Se and Tulika of Ek Ladki Anjaani Si.

Tellychakkar.com finds out from these oh-so-cool-and-evil vamps about the transition and difference between the previous and current genre of scheming ladies of the tube.

Aanchal Dwivedi
- The current lot of vamps is smarter in terms of looks and attitude, and that is very much in demand. They dress very well and are realistic. Previously characters like that of Komalika were out and out negative. In comparison, my character of Kaveri in Saat Phere is quite human. To cite an incident, when in a recent episode my husband Samar became blind, Kaveri was hurt as any normal wife would be. Sometimes when I read the script I laugh thinking, 'Oh I have to be this evil.' I can easily emotionally disconnect from Kaveri post the shoot as I don't carry the character outside sets.

Geetanjali Tikekar- My character Maya in Karam Apna Apna has a humorous edge to her mannerisms. She has no good designs on her, is insecure and is an attention seeker like a page three butterfly. But she is not out to kill someone which Apo*na (my character in Kassauti Zindagi Kay) was capable of. Apo*na had no limits but Maya is quite real. Today's vamps are not loud and don't wear excessive make up. During the initial days, when I essayed Apo*na, I used to be disturbed at times, but now after four years of working I can comfortably switch off.

Kamya Punjabi
- Till date I have mostly played negative roles. Right now I have Woh Rehne Wali Mahlon Ki as well as Banu Main Teri Dulhan in my kitty where I spread viciousness. Talking about the vamp's look, yes it does matter. Like in Dulhan my look is simple and subtle. My character Sindoora wears cotton saris, a nose ring and contact lenses. Also in Woh Rehne Wali…I wear chiffon saris and simple blouses sans contact lenses. Vamps of current times are negative as before but convincing at the same time. They are the hero from episode one. A heroine may get married four times but a vamp focuses only on the hero! Once the shoot is over , sometimes I do tend to remain in the character. At times my pals and co-stars have to come forward to tell me to better be normal!

Arzoo Govitrikar-
Today's vamps are a little more subtle, do less natak and less make up. They are more realistic than before as the writer and director gives them strong reasons to behave the way they do. Vamps add more glam quotient to serials compared to the leading ladies. I don't carry my negative characters home, as I'm just acting in front of the camera. But, I believe that the common man does feel that in real life we are as bad as our characters on screen.

Nigaar Z. Khan-
The previous vamps used to be little over the top in everything. My characters in India Calling and Kasamh Se are not born evil. I feel one need not look vicious to act vicious. The vamp of today is realistic. I don't put any extra bindis or fully loaded lipstick. I make the character look good and sexy and not gaudy. Once the director says cut I am Nigaar Z. khan.

Ashlesha Sawant: A Gentle Breeze On The Telly Circuit
[16 Oct 2006]

Mumbai based and Pune bred Ashlesha Sawant is the latest buzzword on the telly circuit. Being the daughter of an air force officer she has seen whole of India with her dad. Here she talks about her tryst with television and much more……

Q 1: How did acting happen to you?

Ans: My dad's last posting was in Pune and I had just completed my second year of college. That was the time when Balaji auditions were happening. I went there with my friend just for a lark. And 15 days later I got a call from Balaji saying that I was selected as the main lead for a new show, Kya Hadsaa Kya Haqeeqat.

Q 2: But as we all know that that Kya Hadsaa… never happened then how did you get Kyunki Saas Bhi…. ?

Ans: As Kya Hadsa… never happened I went on to play Sumeet Sachdev aka Gautam's secong wife, Teesha in Kyunk Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Adding, "I was told that my role in Kyunki Saas Bhi…. Would wind up in four months but it went on for a year. People started liking the character so they let it go on."

Q 3: Why did you suddenly disappeared from the television?

Ans: I would't say I disappeared, infact I did some shows which never came on air, then I did Zameen Se Aasman Tak for Sahara. Obviously, these are channels that people don't see, so I was never noticed."

Q 4: You never did anything with Balaji after this, there is a rumour that you left Balaji on a bad note, how far is it true?

Ans: No, it is not like that. It's just that when you start shooting a daily, and when you are playing a parallel lead like I was in Zameen… you realize that there is no time for anything else. The problem was that I was not keeping well at all. What could Balaji do? They had full right to move ahead, just because I was not keeping well, they obviously weren't going the stop the show for me. I couldn't report on the sets in time. Finally I decided to go to Pune to recover.

Q 5: How did Saat Phere happen?

Ans: After my 8 months break when I returned from Pune it was then that Zee's Saat Phere happened. This put me back into the limelight.

Q 6: Tell us something about Vaidehi?

Ans: Vaidehi is Aroona Irani's baby. The focus of this serial will be on the main girl, Pallavi Kulkarni, which I think is required right now.

Q7: Do we see you in movies too?

Ans: I don't know but films have never appealed to me that much. I might do one someday but haven't thought about it.

Q 8: There has been a speculation in the media that your personal life has taken a toll on your professional life; there was a rumour that you left Kyunki… because of these relationships?

Ans: I don't think it is true why would I walk out of a show because I was seeing someone?

Q 9: So you never had a relationship with any of your co-stars?

Ans: I had good relationship with all my co-stars.

Q 10: What about romance?

Ans: Well, my character Tara in Saat Phere is a very romantic person who is devoted to her husband and loves him dearly.

Nupur a victim of eve-teasing
By: Vickey Lalwani
November 7, 2006

shhh..koi hai! Nupur Alankar
While her husband was engrossed watching the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li'l Champs Grand finale in Andheri Sports Complex, Nupur Alankar (who plays Halki Pulki Bua in Zee TV's Betiyann) had a nightmarish experience that evening (October 28). While taking a leisure walk from a beauty parlour to her home in Adarsh Nagar, she was followed by a stranger who passed vulgar comments at her and blocked her way in a lonely street.

Cigarette burn
Recounting the horror, Nupur says, "Zee gave me passes to see the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa show, but I gave those to my husband and his friend who are more interested in song-n-dance shows. Instead, I headed to a beauty parlour near my place. On my way back, I heard a man saying something very vulgar. It was so vulgar that I don't think you will be able to print it."
When Nupur turned round to see who it was, she realised that the man was saying that to her. "I just said 'Idiot' and walked away. Soon, I realised that he was following me. I tried sending an SMS to my husband, but it wasn't going through. I couldn't afford to waste more time on my cellphone, and doubled my speed.

When I turned into the lane that leads to my building, he came forward and blocked my way. He said, 'Mujhe aapse baat karni hai' and the tone was very suggestive. He looked like he was a plumber or an electrician. I held his hand and screamed for help. I didn't want him to escape. But he had a cigarette in his mouth which he stubbed on my hand. My grip loosened and he ran away."

By the time, Nupur's husband returned, the stalker was nowhere in sight. Now, her husband says that she should take another walk in the same street and see if she can spot the man. "But neither have I had the
time, nor the guts. I cannot forget that incident; I feel there's a shadow lurking behind me. It will take some time to put it behind me completely," she says.

Nupur has done other shows like Malini Iyer, Reth, Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand and Saat Phere. Currently, she is also doing Ek Chaabi Pados Mein.
