No khushi, only gham
Among all the contestants of SaharaOne's Saas vs Bahu, Kittu Gidwani seems the most disillusioned. The actress has decided to never participate in another reality show! "It's like no matter how hard you work, it doesn't count. What matters is how much you are liked by the judges. The judges have their favourites and I think this whole thing is rigged. I'm anyway an outsider so I don't know the tricks of the trade," says Kittu. The reason being that in spite of good performances, she's been getting poor marks along with her bahu Daljeet. "Our act was brilliant but I was upset with the marks we got," says Kittu. Guess one has to learn to take things in their stride when things go wrong.

Dance of pain
It's quite a different thing if you dance regularly and then go on stage. But when someone is dancing after 21 years, it definitely is going to be difficult! Like for Shoma Anand in Saas Vs Bahu. When she practiced with Bhanujeet for Jumme Raat for three hours, her body couldn't take it. "I had to pop painkillers before I went on stage for the performance," says Shoma. No pain, no gain!

'I was lucky to have a partner like VIP'

Juhi Parmar
September 11, 2008

Juhi Parmar became a household name after playing Kumkum in the telly soap of the same name. Soon after, she won Comedy Circus Season 2, along with her

stand-up comedian partner VIP (Vijay Ishwarlal Pawar).

A wild card entrant on the show, the pair went on to win the title by beating Kamya Punjabi and Rajiv Thakur in the grand finale. Rajul Hegde caught up with the jubilant winner to know more.

You were not part of the show from the start; you entered via wild card. Why?

I was approached from the start but because of date problems, I could not appear on the show. After a few days, they called me again and asked whether I would be able to enter the show as a wild card entrant. I worked out my dates and agreed to do the show.

Viewers must not have expected a 'bahu' to do a comedy so convincingly.

I have played Kumkum so convincingly that viewers are surprised to see me doing comedy. I am more like the Kumkum after reincarnation -- young and bubbly. I can relate to her. Even on the sets I keep cracking jokes, which comes naturally to me. So it is not anything new. I am trying to explore myself.

You were out of the show after two episodes.

I got an amazing response and good comments from the judges. After two episodes I was down with viral fever so couldn't rehearse much and my performance was not upto the mark. After a few episodes, as per the format, all the eliminated participants were given another chance to enter the show. I was the lucky one.

Who was your toughest competitor?

Krushna and his partner.

You said comedy comes naturally to you. Did you have to prepare?

Doing comedy was not difficult for me. I learned my lines in 10 minutes. When two people are performing, it is very important to strike a balance. That will happen only when there is proper co-ordination and practice. So we would spend more time on rehearsals.

What did you like about your partner VIP?

I am very lucky to have a partner like him. We had no ego clashes; he is a down-to-earth and lighthearted person. We ensured that each of us performed equally. VIP was the runner-up of the Comedy Circus season 1 so he knew exactly what would work.

Of acting, singing, comedy and dancing, which is the toughest?

Singing was difficult because it is not my forte. I was very nervous each time I performed. The chances of something going wrong was much higher because you have to control your vocal chords.

You are playing Kumkum for seven years. Aren't you bored of it yet?

I know it is monotonous to do a show for a long time but I am lucky to have played six different characters in it. I can relate more to younger Kumkum after the reincarnation. I am enjoying playing this role.

How has the experience been so far in the Saas vs Bahu dance show?

I am not nervous, as dance comes naturally to me. I have even received compliments from the judges. I am having a ball on the show.

Are you open to more reality shows?

Yes. As an actor, I try my best to experiment with different genres.

What is the best compliment you have received in Comedy Circus?

After my last performance in the finals, all the judges gave me a standing ovation. Archana Puran Singh [one of the judges] got up and bowed. I think that was the best compliment because actions speak louder than words.

Shoma Anand unhappy

Shoma Anand currently seen in Maayka as the mother in law of Soni (Shilpa Shinde) was not comfortable with the kind of comments she got from Aroona Irani in Saas Vs Bahu. Shoma told us the entire story.

She explains her reasons for doing this show. "Actually I did not want to do this show. I was not that keen but then Shilpa Shinde, who plays my daughter in law in Maayka, wanted to do this show. She convinced me initially for this but then she could not do it because of her date problem. However I already said yes to them so it would have been unprofessional if l would have refused to be part of it later on."

Talking about what went wrong, she says, "I was aware that when you do any show you have to face criticism too. But judges need to take into consideration the age gap between bahu and saas. It is natural that they can perform better than us because they have energy in them. Further those costumes, jewellery suits their figure rather than us. What I did was not bad. They gave me a song of Urmila, which was very energetic and I did whatever I could do. I performed on stage after so many years. Moreover if I would have got any classical song then I could have performed better.

"But it is fine with me if judges do not like it as my career is not dependent on this show. I have done so many shows and films so people have always supported me. I do not regret giving healthy answers of questions which are raised by judges. They should take into consideration all matters rather than comparing us with the bahu team."

Lastly Shoma reveals that she was also not prepared for this show. " Now it is fine. If any other good reality shows comes my way I will work hard for it and then accept it. This time I hardly got any chance because they spoke to us about this show and within 10 days we started filming."

Shoma Anand is doing a film with Rishi Kapoor after 25 years called Love Ka Chakkar, where she will be playing his wife. They were last seen together in the movie called Barood.

Remember the dapper yet doughty Swetlana, or the upstart yet upwardly mobile Mini Agarwal of tellyland? Playing both the daring dames with effortless lan, Kitu Gidwani is still synonymous with her small-screen kirdaars that won her popularity over a decade ago. Raring to go as a leg-shaker on the floor of Saas Vs Bahu, the reality dance show on Sahara One, Gidwani has the hidden junoon to spring back into meaningful scripts and win applauds.

"The Indian psyche is ingrained with the dance mania. The actors are rooted to the capering craft like fish to water. And considering the contemporary scene, the Bollybics is going places indeed. Nowadays, it's an international fad to get into the groove of Bollywood moves." The actress however feels sad about the lack of quality roles and says, "There's no quality work at all on the tube now. Why should I say yes until I get something worthwhile? The kind of well-defined roles, I did a few years back, is seldom noticed in today's TV serials." She has always represented herself as not a flippant rabble-rouser but a woman of substance.
