I agree Jodha Akbar (which was some how praied in high heavens) was actually a let down, now this was a period film where brilliance of ARR was much needed.

True - but then we are comparing ARR with the standards we he has himself set up. Music of JA wasn't upto the mark but I do not feel it was a total let down. Besides I can't think of another contemporary MD other than probably ID who could have done justice to JA

I agree there is dearth of good composers, JL were more into romantic genre, ID is the only name that leaps into my mind.

Do we have ardent fans of Ilaya Raja, I read that initial melodies of ARR had roots in IR's songs..?? How far is this true..?? I think this is false because their format and pattern is different.

I must say unlike IR saab ARR was lucky in the sense that Mani Ratnam had faith in him and supported him with the much needed large banner which is a must to establish any composer, this was an era when our TV media and Bollywood was expanding like any thing and ARR benefited from this.

Rahman being an intelligent musician, keeps evolving and growing with each film. For example, in The Legend of Bhagat Singh, he had composed the song Mera Rang De Basanti Chola. The composition was so Southern that one could not identify it with the Sikh freedom fighter at all. But in Lagaan and then in Rang De Basanti, one hardly sees the southern touch. There is a conscious effort to keep the North Indian flavour.

Beyond all the discussion one thing is for sure, impact of ARR on music making is tremendous. Around 5 years back every one was trying to compose iin the line of ARR using same MIDI, sequencer ryhthm etc.

Actually when ID initially composed for HDDS it sounded very much like ARR's songs and he was adviced by Bhansali to make some thing different.

Hey, Kirti, I am fine and hope so are you. Today I maroed Dandi from office.
Summer, well what can I say, it was painful to see ARR win award after award for Guru's music. Sometimes i think just the name counts and not the work. The best music was surely Om Shanti Om or Jab We Met (even though some tunes were copied). This year too for me the best music has been of AAMIR but i am sure ARR will walk away with the awards for Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane na. In this album too - Aditi is a great song, Tu bole main bolo is a good song, Nazrein milana is decent and Pappu cant dance is not a composers delight, it has some catchy lyrics and hence has done well on the charts. Musically it is an okay song.
Indradhanush, I dont know about the lyricist coz yes, Mishra is bad. But in Guru, One two ka four and Jodha Akbar the lyricist are of repute but score is just about above average. Earlier his lyricist use to be Mehboob, I dont know where he has disappeared. He had a pet shop at Bandra Talao and I have bought gold fishes from him. But he is no more at the shop. Just vanished !

Hi there 😜

IMO pappu can't dance is marred by bad lyrics. In this song we witness some columnar delight of Western music like the chorus which follows after (besur) pappu yarro ka yaar hai in antara is on major 7 th chord, this guy has good imaginatiion.

ARR the genius which we saw in his earlier days gave phenomenal music in Roja, Bombay, Dil Se, Sapnay, Hum Se hai Muqabla, rangeela, Muthu, etc etc.
His music in Mangal Pandey was a big let down after the super score in Lagaan.
Even his music in Guru i felt was not good and was last years most hyped score. Baring out a brilliant Barso re and a decent Bin tere Kya jeena all the other songs were not good - Jodiyan ek nahi do was a nightmare and even Maiyya Maiyya was not a good composition although with Mallika and promotion, the song did well.
These days his albums have just 1 or 2 good songs and the rest are Bekar like in Jodha Akbar, the Jashne Bahara number & Azeemo Shaan are great, Khwaja is okay, rest are bad. In his earlier films all songs used to be gems.

I agre with a lot of what u've said..However some of his best songs are not getting popular/not getting marketed properly(even in today's music)..I agree that the music of one two ka four was outrageous....it didn't sound s bit like ARR......
But in many albums that u've mentioned, the best songs never became popular..Guru - best song-ae hairaten aashiqui...excellent song + hariharan's magic transports the listener to a different world.....I am surprised that so many ppl have claimed that JA was a let down......The popular songs weren't so melodious but man mohana is an excellent song beautifully sung by a SRGMP finalist(1998) called bela shende It never became popular, but it was a lovely bhajan; .....the legend of bhagat singh - sarfaroshi ki tamanna, a lovely composition in desh raag.......even pal pal hai bhari from Swades was quite gud,but it was the beaten track yeh tara woh tara that became popular .Since u hv also not mentioed these songs,i presume(i may be wrong) that u haven't heard them......
I agree that ARR is not half f as good as wht he used to be,but he does produce some excellent songs even today...just that they don't appeal to the new generation 🙂

Rahman has awarded the instrumentalists in his films a status that no music composer before him had done. Siva Mani, became a house hold name because of Rahman. His name figured on the screen and the cassette cover. Rahman changed it all. He gives credit to every single member of his team for whatever part they play, big or small.
'Lot of musicians like – Naveen (flute), Clinton Cerejo (backup vocals), Sivamani (percussions) – became household names with their credits appearing on the sleeves of inlay cards. Not only on the screen (in terms of credits), but even on the sound track (in terms of sound) Rahman made his instrumentalists stand out. How can one forget the sound of the Shehnai in the title song of Swades? Or the sound of the raw flute in 'Chinamma' from the film Meenaxi – A Tale of Three Cities?'
