Slow and Steady

The name Javed Ali does not yet evoke rapturous responses from music fans but mention the song Ek din teri raahon mein from Naqaab, and they will perk up immediately. Playback singer Javed Ali, the voice behind the song, has been working in Bollywood for nearly a decade, finally finds fame knocking at his door.

Bollywood is a place where instant gratification rules. Everyone wants fame and money - now. Playback singer Javed Ali is a class apart from the usual industry types. His rise to fame has been slow and steady. He doesn't regret it at all. What he wants is to be known as a good singer. He is not in the least bit bitter that although he played a part in the song 'Kajraa re' (Bunty Aur Babli), he was overshadowed by Shankar Mahadevan and Alisha Chinai. He admits that he got noticed only in songs where he had to 'stand in' for the final singer and dub his lines. Even in Naqaab, the original choice was Zubeen Garg. It is perhaps this very attitude that will help him carve a niche in the long run.

Javed Ali's father Hamid Husain, is a renowned Qawwali, Gurbani and Kirtan singer. He was Javed's first teacher. Later, the young man learnt music from Mallu Khan and Majid Khan as well. He says that although classical training helps, a playback singer has to be extremely versatile in order to survive in Hindi films. Javed Ali also impressed Kalyanji (of the famous Kalyanji-Anandji duo)so much that the veteran music man even suggested to Javed's father that he, Kalyanji, would foot all his educational expenses if he remained in Mumbai. However, Javed went back home to Delhi, honed his singing skills and came back to Mumbai in 1999.

The path to becoming a playback singer was carved by Kalyanji since initially, Javed only wanted to be a ghazal singer. However, when Kalyanji asked him why he did not want to sing in films, Javed thought it was a good idea and started working on becoming one. It wasn't difficult since he was already a trained classical singer. He sang his first song, a duet with Anuradha Paudwal, in Viju Shah's (Kalyanji's son) Beti No. 1. However, the film did not do well and he sang 'A ding-dang-do' in Paagalpan along with Udit Narayan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Harvard and Vicky. It was no surprise that he was never noticed.

His breakthrough came with 'Ab ghar aaja' in Haasil in which he sang his first solo. He dubbed the song for Jatin-Lalit but director Tigmanshu Dhulia liked his voice so much that Javed's voice was retained. He reasons that although the classical tag might have been a reason for the slow and steady rise in his career, he was never without work. The songs kept coming in ranging from 'Chhalka chhalka' (Aankhen) to 'Bheegi hui koi shaam hai' (Chameli). Recently he has sung in My Friend Ganesha and worked with A.R. Rahman in some regional films as well.

He is all praise for Pritam, his music director in Naqaab. He is grateful for all that the industry has given him and says that he got plenty of work to do remix along with working in TV serials. He has no qualms singing songs of any genre although he trained in classical music. He knows that in order to survive in the film industry, he needs to be versatile, talented and persevering. Javed Ali is well on his way to claiming his own spot in the spotlight.

Javed Ali to sing in Yuvraaj

Friday, February 1, 2008

Javed Ali

He believes in going slow and steady and so he kept on singing and waiting for that big song. A fresh voice that doesn't resemble anyone else's and a current favourite with A R Rehman.

Ali's voice is across the music channels these days. After his first song with music composer A R Rehman congratulatory calls have been pouring in. For 29-year-old Javed Ali, it's been a long struggle since he first sang for an easily forgettable film called Beti No 1 in 2000.

"After I sang for Beti No 1, there were no offers for me. I thought I can't become a playback singer. However I kept on trying anyway," Ali recalls.

Born and brought up in Delhi, Ali started singing since he could remember. He started out with his dad — a popular qawwali singer, Ustad Hamid Hussain. Music composer Kalyanji once heard him at a stage show, and impressed with his voice asked him to try his luck at playback singing. From jingles and title track for TV soaps, he gradually moved to films.

But that big song never came his way or even if it did, his voice was later replaced with someone else's voice, which is quite the norm with many new singers.

"It's frustrating but after sometime you get used to it. Sometimes your voice doesn't suit the actor and there are many other reasons. There is no way out," Ali says.

So, he waited for lady luck to smile at him and continued singing for films like Kyun Ho Gaya Na, Haasil, Paagalapan, Chameli, Bunty aur Babli and more recently in Golmaal and Malamaal Weekly.

It was in 2007 that he struck big time with Jab We Met's Nagada Nagada and then followed it up with Ek Din from Naqaab. And when AR Rehman asked him to sing for Jodha Akbar he could not believe his luck, because to sing for Rehman was his ultimate dream. And now in spite of singing for chartbusters, there is someone who is still very difficult to please.

"Daddy keeps on correcting my singing. How to do, what to do, but mom is always happy with whatever I sing," Ali adds.

Like many others, Rehman is surely impressed with him, as the maestro has repeated Ali in Sivaji's Hindi remake and Subhash Ghai's musical Yuvraaj.

Chameli
By Ali Ladhani
Bollyvista.com

Music: Sandesh Shandilya
Lyrics: Irshad Kamil, Prof R.N. Dubey
Vocals: Javed Ali, Sunidhi Chauhan, Udit Narayan
Label: T-Series

The upcoming film CHAMELI has had a lot going for it. For one, a starcast which combines two different schools of learning (the extremely talented Rahul Bose and Kareena Kapoor), but also a quite underrated music director by the name of Sandesh Shandilya. For once, Shandilya does not leave any room for other music directors to steal his thunder, and produces an album which will surely make the industry sit up and notice. The album stars Sunidhi Chauhan, but also brings in Udit Narayan and Javed Ali for a song which is sure to take the music industry by storm. A musical gem? Read on...

"Bhaage re mann kahin, aage re mann chala, jaane kidhar jaano naa"
The album opens up with the beautiful and soulful BHAAGE RE MANN. Sunidhi Chauhan gives an innocent and beautiful rendition, with Irshad Kamil's lyrics painting out a beautiful picture of the scene. Sandesh's classic and enlightening instrumentation only adds to the appeal of the song. A song like this makes the album worth a buy immediately. But wait, this isn't the last good number? The best is yet to come?

"Maine saat samundar dhol gaya, jo tu aankhon se bol gaya, le tere ho gayi yaar sajna ve sajna"
Sunidhi returns for SAJNA VE SAJNA, an upbeat style dance number. Once again, Sundhi Chauhan takes charge, making the song her own. Her rendition is more fiesty than her first number, but gives it her all and succeeds very well. Once again, lyrics paint a beautiful picture of the envornment of the song, and Sandesh succeds to a certain extent in complementing Sundhi's vocals. The second version of this song is equally as good,

"Bheegi hui koi shaam voh, mahka hua koi naam voh, din baat hi hoti hai nilam voh, mashor hai phir bhi badnam voh, jaane hua hai aaj kya hamein na hum, jaane kiyun humko yaad aaye voh"
The rage of the album comes in 4 forms, as Sandesh knew he simply had a gem of a song on his hands when he composed JAANE. The first version of the song, incidentally the best version, features Udit Narayan with Sundhi supporting. Udit gives an award-worthy rendition of the song, while Sunidhi sounds angelic in her short stanza. The lyrics, once again, power the song to move forward and give it a beautifully romantic feel to it. The soulful jazz feel to the song only adds to its appeal. Also high on the ranking list comes the second version of this song, a duet featuring Javed Ali and Sunidhi Chauhan. Both do a commendable job, with Sunidhi getting more than the previous version. The third version features Sunidhi doing a solo of the song, and she does a magnificent job. The last version, entitled The Soul of Chameli, is a beautiful instrumental version with the jazz feeling truly coming out. Truly one of the most beautiful and soulful songs of the year!

"Thaki thaki se shaam, phir javaan hone lagi, o jaano ne churaye hai raat hai sab hai"
Professor R.N. Dubey is roped in as a guest lyricist for the song YEH LAMHA, which features Sunidhi Chauhan. The song has a more contemporary feel to it, but gives ample range for Sunidhi Chauhan to display her long ranging vocals. She does not disappoint, and gives a beautiful rendition.

Overall, this is truly Sandesh Shandilya's best work to date. He has outdone himself. A dark horse in terms of an album, nobody saw it coming, but once it did, everyone has sat up and taken notice. With each song giving a soulful and romantic feel to it, especially the gem JAANE, this album is one that true music lovers will cherish, and will make history with this album. Truly beautiful!

Javed Ali is one happy singer these days!
October 23, 2007

Javed Ali

Javed Ali is a very happy singer these days. This shaagird of Ghulam Ali ji knew that his song 'Ek Din Teri Rahoon Mein' is a popular number and has the potential to be popular, but he had never thought that it will become a craze. "Everywhere I go I am asked to sing this song. Recently, when I was performing at a college in Kolkata, the young crowd kept asking for repeat performance of this song. I had to sing it six times before they allowed me to move ahead with other songs. Then I received call from a FM Radio in South Africa where this song is topping the charts since its release, for a live chat with listeners. I have got calls from other countries too. And to think that, originally I was asked to sing this song only as a demo song. I really do thank my stars and Pritam ji. It's like a milestone in my career," he gushes.

Currently his song "Nagaada Nagaada" from Shahid Kapur and Kareena Kapoor starrer JAB WE MET is creating waves. He had taken Alaap for the song sung by Shaan for the film MARIGOLD.

His forthcoming films are JODHA AKBAR, AA NACH LE.

Zindaggi Rocks - Music Review
Courtesy:IndiaFM

Friday, August 25, 2006

Tanuja Chandra has been known for making films that revolve around female protagonists. Starting from 'Dushman' [Kajol], 'Sangharsh' [Preity Zinta] and 'Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar' [Amisha Patel] to 'Sur - The Melody of Life' [Gauri Karnik] and Film Star [Mahima Chaudhary], each of her films have starred a female in a pivotal role. Meanwhile Sushmita Sen too is acting in more and more films that have a statement to make from a female's point of view or at least have a female as the central protagonists. 'Samay - When Time Strikes', 'Paisa Vasool', 'Vaastu Shastra' to 'Chingaari' are just to name a few. This is what makes the project 'Zindagii Rocks' exciting since it brings the two females together. Presence of Shiney Ahuja as a male lead further adds on to the uniqueness of this project that is touted to feature some 'rocking' music by Anu Malik who now prefers to be called Aanuu Mallik. Mudassar Aziz is the lyricist. Earlier titled Rockin', the film comes from the banner of BAG Films and is slated for a September release.

Aanuu Mallik hasn't been having a great 2006 with first Himesh Reshammiya hogging away all the limelight for his solo title version of 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye' when the fact was that Mallik scored for the rest of the album. This was followed by some average score in 'Pyaare Mohan'. Does he strike back with 'Zindaggi Rocks'? Yes, indeed he does!

Javed Ali, who has been slowly but steadily getting recognition in the world of playback singing, gets an opportunity to begin the proceedings of the album with 'Meri Dhoop Hai Tu'. From the lyrics it seems to be an intellectual track but that turns out to be a deception since Aanuu Malik presents this love song in a rhythmic mode. Tulsi Kumar, who has sung her maximum songs with Himesh Reshammiya so far [though she also had a hit in the form of Aanuu Malik's version of the title song of 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye'], comes along with Javed Ali for this item song which is quite well written by Sayeed Quadri who has been roped in for just this track. The remix version follows immediately that maintains the same pace with the arrangements just becoming crisper and a little stylish. Overall a decent catchy track to mark the beginning of an album from which there are much expectations.

From hereon Mudassar Aziz takes over as a lyricist starting with 'Rabbi'. The funky manner with which this track begins, it is reminiscent to Pritam style of composition, what with rap-n-reggae thrown in along with heavy duty beats and interspersion of the word 'Rabbi'. Krishna starts the song with an extended 'aalap' before Zubeen Garg and Sunidhi Chauhan take over the mike. There are just some slight shades of Middle-East music in this smashing number that has a potential to be an instant hit allover if promoted aggressively.

For a track like 'Rabbi' it is imperative that it features in a remix version too. Justified in its presence in the album, now the call of the situation is a promotional video to be built around it and the results should be there to be seen. The only word of caution - though as a listener one doesn't really care much of the song is an original or an inspiration, one hopes for Aanuu Mallik's sake that this is entirely his own since he is anyways working quite exclusively today in the wake of Reshammiya and Pritam wave!

Remember Anushka Manchandani who was heard in the hit title track of 'Golmaal' a few weeks back. The girl with a sensual-n-husky voice is back with yet another title song, this time for 'Zindaggi Rocks'. The album continues to be set in a rock mode as the song is the first in the album to be actually based on a live concert. The song sounds just fine when one expected a much contemporary track for a title song that should be appearing at a crucial juncture of the movie. The song has a feeling of d'j' vu, especially during the 'antara' portions, and it is only the western arrangements that still manage to make it sail through. Overall, it succeeds to a fair extent for the situation since it creates a euphoric feel of a real time rock concert.

From here begin a string of Sunidhi Chauhan solos that take the album till its end. After all the rock-n-roll happening on your music system, things turn mellow with an arrival of 'Ek Din Fursat', something that one was looking for. Coming quite close to the style of 'Le Chale' [My Brother Nikhil'] , it too has a very deep feel to it that is enhanced to a great effect due to smooth-n-soothing musical arrangements. Also the sound design around Sunidhi's voice makes it a special song and undoubtedly the best of the enterprise so far. Though Sunidhi is on the forefront of this track, Mudassar Aziz lyrics deserve a special mention for the feel they create. Also the veteran in Aanuu Mallik shows why he is around for decades inspite of competition coming in from all quarters. A beautifully written song that has been given a divine treatment by the composer and singer!

Do we really need a remix version for a mellow track like 'Ek Din Fursat'? One can't help asking this question before playing on the remix version that follows. Thankfully the essence of the track is maintained in this retro version of the song that creates a feel of the early 80s [something on the lines of musical arrangement by Biddu] and makes 'Ek Din Fursat' a great hear again. The English passages throughout the track only add on to the impact.

'Humko Chhoone Paas Aayiye' is the second rock ballad in a row for this album that continues to throw in surprises. For those who love anything that is not conventionally Bollywood, this is the one for you. A beautiful love song with a guitar accompanying Sunidhi's voice, it is difficult to select between it and 'Ek Din Fursat' for the better of the lot! Excellent arrangements by Mallik make this melodious track extremely likeable. Lyrics too are above ordinary and do not even once try to follow the routine 'ishk vishk pyaar vyaar' approach. This makes it two in a row for Sunidhi as far as coming up with some lovely solos is concerned!

It's back to performing live in a concert with 'Hadh Ko Adab Ko', a rock track. Fitting in well with the genre of the film, this Sunidhi Chauhan number reminds one of numerous songs belonging to this genre that one would have heard in Hollywood musicals. The song is fit for its situation and as expected a remix version of the same appears too. There is a calypso element involved in the track here that brings the concert to fun on a sunny beach. Peppy and enjoyable!

'Zindaggi Rocks' is an album that truly surprises. Though Tanuja Chandra's 'Sur' really had some 'sureela sangeet', one wasn't sure if her collaboration with Aanuu Malik would indeed be able to pull off a score that would befit the film's genre. Well, in addition to some rocking tracks like 'Rabbi' and 'Meri Dhoop Hai Tu', the surprise comes in the form of 'Ek Din Fursat' and 'Humko Chhoone Paas Aayiye' which are just delicious.

This one is on you Aanuu!
