In conversation with music composer Anand Raj Anand.

What prompted you to start working on your own music album?

After Dil de Diya became a hit, I realised that the listeners were accepting my songs and I was relieved to know that I wasn't imposing anything on anyone.

The compositions are over and I have started dubbing now and one of the videos will be directed by Sanjay Gupta. Though I had aimed for a November release, I don't think that will be possible now.

Music albums have become visually-oriented these days. Is this a feature of your album too?

I agree that music is more visual now jab ki pehle kaan se bikta tha . I hope to make my album an all-time best. I have been working on this for the last six months now.

What about your stint as music director?

Small budget films aren't being marketed well these days. So, I am concentrating only on big banner films. I have a couple of songs in Dus Kahaaniyan , then there's Welcome by Anees Bazmee, the sequel to Kaante , a couple of films with Sanjay Dutt's home production and a couple of films with Kumar Mangat.

That's a long list. So it's a busy comeback for you?

It's the beginning of a fresh journey for me. I took a break to rediscover myself and here I am. Every individual needs time to create new things and if you are gifted enough, then time shouldn't be a constraint.

Bollywood music is a lot about phases. What's your take on that?

That's always been the case in Hindi film music. I feel when someone is doing well, others shouldn't interfere. Every music director has his own peaks and falls.

This is a commercial world, earlier directors used to tell me ek hit gaana de dijiye, then it became ek hit mukhda, then it became a hook line and now it has become ek hit ringtone de dijiye. I really don't blame anyone in particular.

You mean to say that Bollywood music is just about business these days?

That's moving with the times and I don't see anything wrong in it. RD Burman used to sit with his musicians, but today, we work on computers.
Things are more mechanical and hence the soul in a song lessens too. The creativity is becoming more management oriented now. Music is defined by popular hooklines and ringtones these days.

Have you ever been pressurised by directors to compose 'hit' songs?

Never and even if they ask, as a composer, I must always have something better in hand to give in to their demand. Music can be inspired but not sound designs and yes, acknowledging the source is vital.

Are music composers in the industry getting their due credit?

I don't think composers in the industry today are getting their due respect in spite of winning so many hearts. Probably that's the reason why creativity is getting a little hampered these days.

Music composers do what they enjoy the most but sustaining in the industry is his responsibility. It's not important to be a winner, it's important to remain a winner.

Many of your counterparts have taken to acting. When do you plan to do so?

I never want to act but if it's there in my destiny it'll happen. Actually, I am not a good planner.

You were spotted at a music talent hunt a month back where you promised work to the three finalists. What do you feel about the growing popularity of these shows?

Yes, I have promised to make Amanat, Raja and Aneek sing for me but I strongly feel that the TV channels should be more responsible towards these singers. The fate of these singers shouldn't just lie on the TRPs as they become a part of the emotional wave then. What matters at the end of it all is the professionalism.

And this is what is killing the chemistry in the songs.

👏

Well said. The channel houses can actually do a lot to make the future of these contestants bright. But problem is most of the time after the show gets over they just forget about all these Amanat's and Raja's and Aneek's.
