Sahana, I would say that the applause was for both Gulzar's song and RD's composition. No doubt it is a brilliantly written by Gulzar but what made it soul-stirring is RD's composition. Any other MD may not have done as much justice to the words as RD did with such a compostion. So the credit should go to both Gulzar and RD.

Salilji, I guess I dissect a composition too much. I look at it like this - what if the lyrics had just been recited with no music? It would still be a winner - it needs no tune - it is stand-alone.

No doubt RD is a super-gifted composer and I can recall plenty of his songs where the lyrics become secondary, and his music alone rules - put any lyrics into them.

Gulzar, Sahir and others were such gifted lyricists that MDs struggled to match their lyrics. What a lovely competition there was between lyricist and MD in those songs!

There are three aspects to the appeal of a song - lyrics, composition and rendition. The first two were provided by masters in their fields and the last one by a young man making his foray into the field. The applause was as much for him as it was for the other two. If it had been just the first two aspects, Mika's rendition would have had people crying too. Kudos to Sameer and Amanat for making a vintage melody memorable for a lot of youngsters!

Well said.

But I also agree with posters that this song itself is so stirring that anyone who renders well is going to touch all hearts. My eyes were moist but I am sad that in US they edited out standing ovation and Amanat's repeated rendition. I am thankful though that they edited Mika out😛.

very true, the song sounds more appropriate in male voice. may be we know that the movie scene is both males the father and son. and the lyrics and music ar epriceless but so was amanat's singing. sameer's performance was good too. i think even Mikka was crying he said that bus mere aansoo nikalne ki kasar hai.

well said!!! agree!!!

Mika wasn't bad, but he came as a bump on a smooth road.

the feel should be there, and that is something a singer can put in. this song has been sang many times by many. but boht kam howa hai keh, it touched the heart at such a great scale. the lyrics are mind blowing, but if I would read them, I wouldn't cry. composition is great, if it was HR who did the music, I wouldn't even listen. singers were great. it got the right ingredients. and if it is sang by right ppl then it is best!
