ESPN & Star Cricket together garner 47.2 per cent channel share during Indo-Pak Twenty20 match

The inaugural ICC World Twenty20 has the country hooked onto the TV sets as the Indian Cricket team managed to enter the semi-finals of the tournament. The India-Pakistan match that took place on September 14 touched a peak of 15.2 TVR, while it generated an impressive average rating of 12 TVR (Source: TAM, TG: CS, Males, 15+, SEC ABC, all-India). During that particular match, the combined channel shares for ESPN and Star Cricket stood at an amazing 47.2 per cent, way ahead of all other channels.

ESPN is currently showcasing the ICC World Twenty20 live with English commentary, while Star Cricket is showcasing the same in Hindi. The sports broadcaster has also introduced a special Tamil feed on Star Cricket for cricket enthusiasts in Tamil Nadu.

The interest factor in the non-India matches is also very high, with the first match between host South Africa and West Indies recording a TVR of 5.8. The average ratings for all the matches during the group stage of the tournament from September 11-15 scored an impressive 3.95 TVR.

During the India-Pakistan match, ESPN contributed 26.7 per cent of channel share, while Star Cricket contributed 20.5 per cent. The channel shares of the combined ESPN and Star Cricket was followed by Zee TV at 9 per cent and Star Plus at 5.8 per cent

Overall, the channel shares of ESPN and Star Cricket have seen a huge jump with the commencement of ICC World Twenty20 tournament. The two channels notched up 8.6 per cent of the channel share, ahead of Zee TV at 7 per cent and Star Plus at 6.5 per cent.

ICC World Twenty20 has also affected the ratings for some of the top-rated programmes on the mass channels. When the India-Pakistan match was on, reality shows slotted during the same time band, like 'Indian Idol' on Sony and 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007' on Zee TV saw a loss in the ratings. 'Indian Idol' saw a drop of 35 per cent from the previous week; it had dropped from 3.8 in the previous week to 2.5 during the match day. Similar was the case with 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007', which saw the ratings drop from 6 to 4.2 during the India-Pakistan match (Time band: 1800-2559; Market: All India; TG: CS, M, 15+, ABC).

Not surprising, with HR decreasing SRGMPs ratings
and Indo-Pak match will obviously earn ratings
