You see, no one knows for sure as nobody knows what was going through his head. As for not treating them equally, we only see what the tv shows us. Until Sumedha herself says that "Bappi Da favoured Mauli over me" we won't know, we can only judge from what we see, as we are now.
As a mentor, he can make his own judgement as to who he thinks is out, based on previous trends etc. He may have thought that due to Mauli's increasing popularity w/ the public, she was safe and Sumedha was out. He was only preparing himself for the worst. The fact remains that both are his participants, both he has spent his time and effort with, both he loves a lot.
He shouldn't have quit or "quit" the show, I agree, that was wrong. He shouldn't have made it out as if he had no one else left in his gharana, as he still has a very good contestant in Sumedha. He shouldn't have been melodramatic, and should have accepted the fact that it was Mauli's time to go like she did herself.
He was probably reacting to the fact that both of his contestants were in the bottom 2 and one or the other had to go. he was put in an awkward position. But he shouldnt be condemned for being upset that his contestant who he had trained and cared for for so long was out. The way he handled the situation was wrong, yes, I agree, but he had put a lot of hopes in (both) Sumedha and Mauli and was therefore angry and upset.
