This thought is bugging me for quite sometime now. I have a feeling that some of the best singers slight bad performances attract harsher punishments wheres the somewhat improved performances by inconsistent singers attract disproportionately higher rating provided they have shown how bad they can sing on a bad day. Even though the former's bad performance is still actually a much better one than the later's improved performance.

Do you feel the judges/people rate the singers based on their individual expectations rather than judging the performance in absolute?

I completely agree with you. The judgement and points are being given on the improvement of indivual's performances, not on the comparative performances of a particular day. A little bit not to the expectation level performance of Aneek, Poonam or Amanat results in decrease in their points, whereas an improved performance by some other gives 10 (whether it is perfect or not, but improvised over the past performance), I think this is rediculous error by the judges, as the judges makes an impact on the neutral voters.

Totally agree with you. Bad performers get 10 for singing a just about right but good ones make a small slip up and they are penalized. Not fair

Unfortunately or fortunately the show is not based on the cummulative score and performance - right?
