Lata Mangeshkar and C. Ramchandra were romantically involved while he was married. Mr.Chittalkar was a very handsom person and was attracted to women because of his talent and his personality. He found another lady for whome he dumped his first wife and also Lata Mangeshkar. Since, then there was a fall out between them. She did not sing for him untill "Ye mere watan ke logo" which, was composed by C. Ramchandra.

The above story is not a fiction but came from horsed mouth directly in 1971 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA while he visited. He even offered to recite Satyanarayan Pooja at my house. He could not come at the time of pooja (he was too drunk to get up that early in the morning. He gulped the whole bottle of 750 ML of Jhony Walker Black Label Whisky in one shot) but did come for teerth and prasad. He even requested me to make him a copy of "Ye mere watan ke logo" for him, which, I naturally, complied. He spoke ill of Lata but had high praise for some singer from Pakistan named "Runa Laila".

C Ramachandra was a great MD, Lataji is like the goddess of singing. I will not write my comments on this post, but read the highlighted sections and take the whole incident for what it is worth😃

Burman gave wife Asha a fabulous cartel of crooning escapades -- Piya tu ab to aaja, Chura liya hai tumnein and Mera samaan lauta do are now part of folklore.

But the truth is that barring Nasir Husain's jazzy musicals Teesri Manzil and Yaadon Ki Baraat , Ravi Tandon's Khel Khel Mein and Gulzar's love triangle Ijaazat , he passed on many haunting melodies to Lata.

Asha once exclaimed: "Yes Pancham (R.D. Burman) gave me a lot of opportunities. But he didn't give me Raina beeti jaye (Lata's immortal classic from the film Amar Prem) ."

Speaking of C Ramachandra...this article came in Illustrated Weekly of India couple of years ago...written by Raja bharatn.here is talking about lata best..under C Ramachandra..

Lata's Best?

Raju Bharatan, for Illustrated Weekly of India

------------------------------------------------------------ ------

C Ramchandra and Lata represented the "meloduo" supreme in our film music! Their "dheere se aa jaa ri aakhiyan mein nindiya" (Albela) became the yardstick by which to measure lullabies in films.

Before Lata, C Ramchandra had given a whole array of hits with other female singers, ranging from Shamshad Begum to Amirbai Karnataki, Lalita Dewoolkar to Binapani Mukherjee. But after Lata appeared on the scene, C Ramchandra could think of no other female singer save her.

His evergreens for Lata are legion.

1. Balma bada nadaan re &nbs p; &nbs p; (Albela)
2. Kaahe naina laden & nbsp; & nbsp; (Jhamela)
3. Jo mujhe bhula ke chale gaye &n bsp; (Sangeeta)
4. Kat te hain dukh mein yeh din (Parchhain)
5. Dil unko dhoondhtaa hain &n bsp; (Yasmin)
6. Ae pyaar teri duniya se &nbs p; (Jhanjhar)
7. Tum kya jaano tumhari (Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo)

The last-named has now been picked by Lata to mark out C Ramchandra on the album. It is a composition that syn- thesizes the best of two terrific talents.

The late Shanker spoke no more than the truth when he hailed C Ramchandra as the "greatest all-rounder in Hindustani film music!" After all, Shanker had to take note of the fact that C Ramchandra could, no doubt with the help of Lata, match him even in his specialist field of dance compositions with creations like,

1. Na maaro nazariya ke baan (Pehli Jhalak)
2. Sajna na jaa daras dikha jaa &nb sp; (Ladki)

The same aura was missing when Asha substituted for Lata, in "Navrang", though C Ramchandra's music in the film was a great hit. The Lata magic did return to his music as the two came together for V. Shantaram's " Stree" (1961)
through airs like,

1. O nirdayi preetam   ;   ;(Stree)
2. Jhilmil jhilmil laharon ka &nbs p;(Stree)
3. Angana mein suraj muskaya   ; (Stree)

But C Ramchandra's finest creation for Lata after they came together again, was in a film which never saw the light of the day: "Jitne Door Utne Paas" (on GE33578 record).

this is intersting sahana..

I once read in a interview ..it was in http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticle.asp?xfile=data/we ekend/200... some how the link is not coming up..in this she was asked..

some excerpts...

Did it bother you that even at the peak of your popularity RDB didn't give you songs like Raina beeti jaaye or Beeti na jaaye raina?
He did give me Mera Kuch Samaan, Katara Katara, Piya Tu, Dum Maro Dum, O Mere Sona Re Sona, Chura Liya, etc.

How did it feel when people compare the two of you as singers?
As singers, Lata and me are totally different. We are poles apart even
as performers. She's a great singer and I would never have the
audacity to compare myself with her. Similarly, she should not be
compared with me. We have individually carved our own little places in
history and both of us will be remembered fondly. Between us we have
more than 20,000 recorded songs. Where in the world will you ever have
two sisters with such a record?
How would you rate her as a singer - her plus points and her minuses?
She only has plus points.
During the 70s, after your rift with OP Nayyar, you branched out into
a new form of singing - the glam diva who was sensuous and risque -
with the credit going to RDB. Were you ever nervous
experimenting with this style of singing?

This branching out, etc. are figments of a writer's imagination. I was
too busy to bother about image change, etc. I was just working hard
and very, very busy. In fact, I sung more songs than lata or Rafi in
the 50s, which was lata's and Rafi's peak period. RDB came in
the 60s. He brought an exciting style of music and I enjoyed working
with him.

But why did Lata sing "ai mere watan" for him then?

Well, initially C Ramchandra had Asha in mind for ae mere watan ke logo... but Kavi Pradeep, the writer of the song, insisted that only Latabai can give justice to this song and he agreed to convince her to sing the song under CR. When he approached Latabai, she refused first but finally gave in under one condition that Kavi Pradeep will be present for all rehersals and final recording.

RD may have given countless popular songs with Ashatai but I would always prefer to listen to the classical based compositions that Latabai sang under him---

- ghar aja ghir ayi
- raina beet jayen
- jane kya baat hai

The story I heard about Lata-SD-RD is that Lata stopped singing for SD because SD gave one song to Asha which Lata wanted to sing. But SD was undaunted. Like OPN, he insisted that Lata was not indispensable....and for 8 long years SD gave hit after hit with Asha, Geeta and other female singers --- Pyasa, Paying Guest, Nau Do Gyarah, Kala Pani, Bambai Ka Baboo, Chalati Ka Naam Gadi, Sujata, Baat Ek Raat Ki and many more. Lata would never have sang under SD after 1955 but for RD. RD wanted Lata to sing for him in his first film and connviced SD to patch up with Lata. SD, for the sake of his son, gave in. And then came Tere Ghar Ke Samne in 1963 in which Lata sang for SD after 8 long years. And all the Lata songs, solos and duets, became superhits.
