She did not sing for him untill "Ye mere watan ke logo" which, was composed by C. Ramchandra.

The above story is not a fiction but came from horsed mouth directly in 1971 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA while he visited. He even offered to recite Satyanarayan Pooja at my house. He could not come at the time of pooja (he was too drunk to get up that early in the morning. He gulped the whole bottle of 750 ML of Jhony Walker Black Label Whisky in one shot) but did come for teerth and prasad. He even requested me to make him a copy of "Ye mere watan ke logo" for him, which, I naturally, complied. He spoke ill of Lata but had high praise for some singer from Pakistan named "Runa Laila".

Thank you for the first hand info. But since Mr Chittalkar was drunk , so his words were probably incorrect. Because Runa Laila is not from Pakistan but from Bangladesh. Probably his brain processed Nurjrhan but his vocal output was "Runa Laila".

Unfortunately most of 80s work of RDB never reached the audience, IMO RD had changed style & mode by then...

Hello,

I totally agree with you here. I am an average listner of old songs and I have never come across some of the songs mentioned in your first post. I was actually shocked to read that there are so many good songs of Lata-RD combine that I have never even heard.

Maybe Lata ji was speaking about her more popular songs. Also she does seem a little more fond of era of Madan Mohan, not surprising. As to her favourite compositions, she has sung so many thousands of songs, and at this age she may have a selective memory or maybe she can recollect only a few songs that keep on playing on TV or radio.

I love her songs with Shankar Jaikishan and Madan Mohan the most. But she sounded her best with R. D. Burman.

Sareg,

I was one of the biggest fans of C. Ramchandra and Lata. I merely gave that story to explain why Lata never spoke about C. Ramchandra. He was quite sober when he mentioned (had not started to drink yet) the story I wrote here. Defemation was not my intention if that is what you are thinking. Malaa aslyaa kshullak aNi kalpanik baatamyaa karaayachi savayahi nahi va ichchaahi nahi. Je aikala te lihila. "Doosaryaanche durguNach phakta disaNa haa ek durguNach" he vaakya agdi barobar aahe va te mee pratyaksha aacharNaat aaNato he malaa ithe suchavaave vaaTate.

If I am correct, C. Ramchandra even published a book about his affairs with women. His releationship with Lata was a public news in those days. It is also a fact that he was living with his Second wife and had given up his first one.

Some one asked me why Lata sang C. Ramchandra's song infront of Nehru, if they had stained relationship. It is a puzzle to me too. But one fact is sure Dilip Kumar who was a host of that show who, did not mention C.Ramchandra's name at the function but merely mentioned only the lyricist Pradeep, got the wrath of C. Ramchandra in the backstage. Irate C. Ramchandra, confronted Dilip with a question if Lata instructed him not to mention his name.

Gopalbhai, 1971 when C. Ramchandra visited Milwaukee, Wisoconsin, Bangladesh was not an independent state. It was known as East Pakistan. It was liberated, I am sad to say, by India in March of 1971. Our meeting happened couple of months earlier. So, Runa Laila or whoever he was impressed with was still a Pakistani. C. Ramchandra was surely an alcoholic but still had good command over his thought process. He never talked nonsence. He narrated his life story without stumbling or mumbling.

Punjini, but this a "katu satya". Many people have different facets to their life. This was one of the facets of C. Ramchadra. However, that does not take any thing away from either him or Lata Mangeshkar. Both were or are greatest artists in their respective fields.

he he Barnali ji

I've played this on stage along with full orchestra long back, these are my favourite RD no.s I also LOVE title theme of Sholay, Betaab, Joshilay, Shakti, Subah (remember this doodarshan serial...yes the music & singing was done by Pancham...!!), Pancham and musical part of a song were inseparable, recently I went to the show Remembering Pancham organised by Euphony, it took me to another plane...

Ankush ji the host was brought along with legendary guitarists like Bhanu da, Ramesh Iyer, Homy Mullan saab (persussion) & others, maine inlogo se jee bharke baatein ki, bahut acha laga, can't tell you my experience in words....
Bhanu da showed in detail how the guitar's changing sequence of chords for song Dhand kan pal pal badhti jaye & others were developed by them...
Ramesh Iyer ...when he came to RD for audition as guitarist, he was asked to play something original, he played a piece and 7 years later it was used in fil Samundar for the opening music of song Ye kori karari kawari nazar...by RD...!!

Many other trivias were discussed and it was like going into another world...

please go to this link and listen to song tumse milke zindagi ko yu laga from fil Chor-Police.
http://ww.smashits.com/music/artists/songs/5883/coffee-tea-r d.html#
Listen to brilliant use of only high cat symbol as part of flowing taal along with tabla, Tony Vaaaz playing Bass guitar to the best effect and above all Lata ji's makhmali voice rendering a beautiful composition...
please do let me know whether you liked it or not...these are typical 80s songs of Pancham...!!
