Yes, I agree it is tough for today's MDs. The benchmark has been set and they are struggling to reach it. They are unlucky as you put it. But I am really not joking when I say that these MDs need to go and camp in jungles for a while, then go on a Bharat yatra or Vishwa Yatra incognito, absorb sounds and experiences; some inspiration might come. Same suggestion for lyricists too.

Actually they have been doing these, keeping banks of tunes from africa to alaska. They keep listening to them for inspiration.

i think it's both. both singers and MDs are 👎🏼 .

the c2007 contestants are all very pedestrian sounding to me. even the tucha contestant from c2005 or lil champs was better than the items we have now. 😉 😆

and i dont know how the mentors can fawn over them. contestants look good, is that why? 😉 well, what can we expect from their music then?

just hope the dearth does not come from the fact that these MDs are so eager to rent themselves out to any show that comes along. 😉 easy money, why bother trying anything else, like improving on their craft? and how's it their fault if channels and audiences pursue them because of a couple of hits they gave in the distant past? 😛 yes, if they had any talent, maybe they could have foregone current opportunities to invest in future ones. but how's it their fault if they dont have talent? do they have any other option but to milk it now? for all it's worth? 😉 😆

Aa gaye aap bhi Rahulji? Bas aapki kami reh gayi thi. 😃
You are right. Why should composers bother to compose? They will anyway be paid to appear as mentors in one TV channel or the other.

Once more I am tempted to quote from that movie, 'Amadeus'.
"Mediocrity everywhere" and most MDs and singers seem to be champions of the same. In consuming this mediocrity, we are only further increasing its supply

After listening to the variety of voices we have in the subcontinent, I have come to the conclusion that the problem lies not with singers but with music directors. The reason why the music being composed from the past 10 years will never stand up to the music composed in the 50s, 60s and 70s is that the MDs today are simply sub-standard, uninspired and limited in skills.
The voices are there, but where are the tunes? Where are those situations in movies which gave birth to lovely songs? Why has the freshness gone out of music? Why does every song sound like we have heard it before? Why are today's MDs picking up hit tunes from the past, jazzing them up a bit and projecting them as new tunes? Why re-mixing? Have we run out of tunes? Most of today's MDs have only composed a handful of memorable songs compared to the volumes by yester-years' MDs.
We need a maha-yuddh of music directors not singers!

So Sahana, Do you think MD is more important then singer to make a good evergreen song😛. With so many singers around, can MD polish one with his superb tunes?

I think today's MDs need to take a sabbatical and just disappear somewhere for a few years, and come back to compose music only when they have some real inspiration! Yes, even the film makers can go somewhere and meditate.

These MDs talk about making stars of singers, and this makes my soul cry out in torment. For God's sake, don't focus on stardom. Did anyone listen to the golden words of Asha Bhonsle - Pehle Sarasvati ko pakdo, Lakshmi apne aap peeche chali aayegi.

MDs need to focus on composing good music and singers on developing their range. We don't want stars - we loved Mohd Rafi, Lata, Talat, Asha, Manna De and others - but they were not stars. We loved Madan Mohan, SD Burman, Roshan, OP Nayyar, Salil Choudhury - and they were not stars either.

The so-called stars of today will collapse into black holes as stars generally do at the end of their lives.

We want music - not stars, not icons!

Very well said...... agree whole heartedly.

Nobody swooned at the signt of Lata or Kishore, but their songs and voices will remain in millions of memories forever!!

Whoever are liking Sonu or ARR in this era may keep liking them after 20-30 years and in next era too there may be some people will not like singer/MD of that era instead will like singer/MD of this era... I do not listen this era songs in general but I can not deny those who like thie era songs and see stars in today's singers and MDs, they are in large number.

well ..i never said "they will not be remembered"...after 20 -30 yrs later

see my quote above I said there is something in older MDs that todays MD might not have..How can I say something which has not happened yet ..i can only comment on which has already..

now about todays MDS..how many sonu nigam and AR we have...how many songs are there which can actually touch ur soul and can move you enough that u feel close to them?its only music and beat ...majority atleast ..they come and go ..And here Iam not talking about todays generation etc etc..I donot think iam old 😆😆..neither I was born in Rafi ji era..

how many MD right now are there who are original..and when u listen to tehre composition u feel "alive"

right from ...C.Ramachandra,Vasant Desai,Naushad,Shankar-Jaikishan,Madanmohan,Roshan,Salil Chowdhury,OP nayyer, SD berman, RD barman, kalyan ji anad ji..just to name some..

Music directer like RD Burman was trained under maestro Amir khan and was an accomplished Tabla player. His extensive classical music background can be seen in his many songs.

I guess RD barman , K ji and AJi and LP have been more versatile than many music directors that came before them because they were able to compose diferent kinds of songs and were able to change their music with time.

similarly SD Burman ji also changed with the times. He was in demand till he died and till then his music was of exceptional quality.

For my part, I shall continue to take solace from the fact that I can still listen to the lovely recordings of music from the '50s and '60s whenever I can. Be it off-line or on-line. It's always there for me whenever I need it. I am really lucky to have a vast collection of music records, CDs and tapes built over the years by my mom and sis. These will always be there for me. Some rare songs are there in our personal video collection too. Thank God for that!
