Another thing that people usually associate with Ghazals is sadness....

Here is one ghazal (with deep sad meaning, but a happy overall tone) that I just remembered...

mai.n zi.ndagii kaa saath nibhaataa chalaa gayaa
har fikr ko dhu.Ne.n me.n u.Daataa chalaa gayaa

barabaadiyo.n kaa soG manaanaa fizuul thaa
barabaadiyo.n kaa jashn manaataa chalaa gayaa

jo mil gayaa usii ko muqaddar samajh liyaa
jo kho gayaa mai.n usako bhulaataa chalaa gayaa

Gam aur khushii me.n fark na mahasuus ho jahaa.N
mai.n dil ko us muqaam pe laataa chalaa gayaa

Here is another Ghazal that is not sung by Talat Mehmood or Md. Rafi... Hemant Kumar did a brilliant job out of this one...

Sahana, this follows all the rules of the ghazal (beher, radif, kaafiyaa, matla), except that the stanzas are not really shers Shers are necessarily of 2 lines. From what I read everywhere is that the Ghazal has to have all 2 line stanzas (shers) but there are many many songs which I find listed as ghazals which have 3 lines in the stazas. So in loose terms I would call this as Ghazal (just like Rafi's -- rang aur noor ki baaraat kise pesh karu) but by strict definition no.

Thanks Jaya for clarifying this. There are many ghazals that are in a happy overall tone. Some examples --

1. milati hai zindagi mein mohabbat kabhi kabhi (Ankhe)

2. teri zulfon se judai to nahi mangi thi (Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai)

3. door rahekar na karo baat karib aa jaao (Amanat)

4. tumhare jhulf saaye mein shaam kar loonga ( Naunihal)

there are many more .....

Composer Jaidev gave us 3 outstanding ghazals in film Gaman. Many will remember this as the movie where Hariharan got his first break and his ghazal became instant hit shooting him to fame overnight. Here are the 3 classy ghazals from this film:

Thanks for reminding these lovely numbers.... Jaidev was such a great composer... How I wish, he had composed more music, and had got the much deserved recognition..

No Jaya, this is not a ghazal. Yes, it follows the 'radif' rule but not kaafiyaa -- the word before radif ( in blue above) -- rule...they do not rhyme.
