Sufi songs appeal to me, says Kailash Kher

Saturday, 30 September 2006
</>

Kolkata, September 30: From the songs of Sufi saints, Kailash Kher is now keen to explore the music of the wandering minstrels of Bengal. The singer is now working on a Bengali album, which will comprise music of the Bauls of Bengal.

"I don't know the language well but understand it," he says about his comprehension of Bengali. What interests him most is the similarity that Baul philosophy has with Sufi culture, which has influenced his singing greatly. "That is why I decided to do a Bengali album," says Kher, who was in town on Friday to perform at a concert, Moksha.

The singer is in the process of writing the songs and will start composing in a few months' time. "I have a number of Bengali friends who are musicians and I will have to take their help. I will approach them once I have written the songs," he says.

The album will also have songs from other parts of eastern India. This is something the singer tries to maintain in all his albums. "The first had shades of north Indian music like Punjabi, UP, Himachali and others. The next album will have Rajasthani, Gujarati and Maharashtrian flavour," says Kailash who has already recorded a song for his next album, called Joban chalke, with two band members, Naresh Kamath and Paresh Kamath.

"We did not know that Kailash would be liked and appreciated so much. So we decided to come out with the second album within four months. It will be released in another couple of months," says Kher.

What is keeping the singer busy these days is his international concert with Pearl Jam guitarist Eddie Vedder. "It will happen in March next year and a lot of work needs to be done. Both of us are very nervous as the concert is dedicated to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and we don't want any flaws," he says. Kher will be going to US in November for the final round of talks with Vedder.

The singer has recently completed recording for Shankar Ehsaan Loy in Salaam-e-Ishq and is excited about the song, Pyar hai aisa. "It is a slow, romantic track and I am sure it will be liked by all. I always like love songs. That is why Sufi songs appeal to me," says Kailash.

"Even audiences like love songs. That is why Teri diwani was an instant hit. I worked a lot on the song because I understand what love means. Mujhe maloom hai pyar mein kya paagalpan hota hai because I have been through it," he says.

Manjit Bawa
In Love With Life

For manjit Bawa, life is about celebrating every moment. Subjects of divinity and epics have inspired Bawa for as long as he can remember but he is also drawn to the common man and the stray goats, cows, bulls and dogs that wander around in the streets. Bawa, a Sufi, loves to reach out to others and on his travels has often befriended the wandering baul, fakir or even cheeky dhaba help. At other times, he plays a pahari dhun on his flute, gathering a crowd of smiling strangers around him in the process. In his 60s now, Manjit Bawa's passionate romance with life and all that it has to offer continues. He enjoys theatre and cinema as much as music. A great reconteur, he loves to tell stories of his life and experiences to friends, often breaking into song if the mood comes upon him. His exuberant spirits finds reflection in his art that seems to have moved to greater heights with time.

TALK

Sandstone Serenade

As this Mughal monument celebrates 350 years of existence, a Sufi music show helps Red Fort relive its lost splendor
Meher Fatma

Did you know that the magnificent Red Fort in Delhi has completed 350 years of existence? It took a musical event that was organized at its premises recently to remind us of its classical beauty. Aptly titled Noor-e-Jannat, the show was a conglomeration of live performances by Nizami Brothers, Pakistani singers Shafqat Amanat Ali and Shehzad Roy and other artists.

Usually the popular sites for Sufi music shows are the Qutab Minar complex and Lodhi Gardens. This time, music-lovers explored the enchanting Diwan-e-Khas at the Red Fort as the newest venue hosting this show.

The full moon lit up the venueand the fort unwrapped its hidden glory to the audience.

The open-air sitting arrangement, which till now has only been used for sound and light programmes, ran packed with some 1,500 people determined to witness the live performances of familiar voices from our neighbouring country.

Pakistani singers Shafqat Amant Ali, whose vocals for Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Dor are topping the charts these days; and Shehzad Roy, who has collaborated with artistes like Bryan Adams back home were the highlights for the evening. Also, some 150 Pakistani students were specially flown in for the event to dance to the steps of Anamika Singh, still basking in the success of Yash Raj Films' Fanaa, which she choreographed with Saroj Khan. The dress code for the dancers was restricted to white for girls and black for boys.

The evening began with 13-year old Ishan Grover from Make-A-Wish organization that works for the children suffering from life-threatening medical conditions. It was followed by a few exclusive compositions for the show by different artists. And as the moon climbed further up in the sky, the premise rocked with songs like Mitwa and Yeh hausla by Shafqat Ali and pop-ish compositions by Roy.

"India has a very strong film industry and we share similar tastes in music,'' said Shafqat Ali, who now has his eyes firmly focused on bollywood. Even Roy, is now giving it a serious thought.

And, in case you missed being at this event, the singers will soon be flying back to the country for lending their voice for upcoming Bollywood flicks.

Many thanks to Qwest Da and others who have taken the time, patience and effort to post these wonderful articles. I have learnt a lot from reading everything. I am a lover of Qwali music, especially Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, I have many of his albums, thank you for sharing his life on this thread. I am indeed grateful, now I can chat with my brother more intelligently about this subject. He is the one who introduced me to Nusrat, gave me an album, and from day I was hooked.
