Javed Akhtar once said, "Have you ever heard a Bappi Lahiri song that is dull? His songs are so bright." That sums up the Bappi style. Even the pathos-laden melodies ('Nanha Sa Panchhi Re Tu..', 'Naina Yeh Barse..') always have a certain spark in them. Bappi Lahiri is one composer who had the basic credentials but chose to go commercial in most of the assignments (400 films in approximately 28 years) that he took up. He sidelined old favourites like Gauhar Kanpuri, Farukh Kaiser and Shaily Shailendra once he hit big time, but today he is reduced to working with small or unknown names like Sunil Jha.

Known as the Disco King at his peak, the poor man is generally considered the master plagiarist even though as he says, "Everyone has plagiarized right from the veterans. But I have done it from famous sources, there is no pretence'. The composer is always bedecked with jewellery, which includes pendants of religious or astrological value. His worst critics concede that he was always a trendsetter and that he has his own identifiable compositional and orchestral style, which Bappi says is only possible when you have a strong musical base. Considered a poor clone of R.D.Burman, he denies it and says that S.D.Burman and Madan Mohan are his inspirations. His favourite singers have always been Kishore Kumar and the Mangeshkar sisters and he has always sung a lot.

Bappi Lahiri is the son of veteran classical singer Bansari and musician and singer Aparesh Lahiri. A child prodigy, he began to play the tabla from the age of three and developed his liking for rhythm. He learnt classical music from his parents and made his debut as a music director at the age of 14 with Daadu, a Bengali film released in 1972. His relatives from his mother's side include singer Kishore Kumar and the S. Mukerji clan. Shomu Mukherji, S. Mukherji' son, gave him his Hindi break in Naha Shikari (1973). In the same year, he composed the background score for the songless B. R. Ishara film Charitra. Followed Bazar Band Karo, a B. R. Ishara non-starter in 1974. In 1975, Bappi Lahiri got his first brush with fame as the music director of the Tahir Husain multi-star hit Zakhmee, in which he sang his first song, 'Nothing Is Impossible..' with Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar. In the same year, his songs from Chalte Chalte, whose audio was released almost simultaneously, became a rage, especially the title song, 'Kabhi Alwida Na Kehna..' sung by Kishore Kumar, 'Jaana Kahaan Hai..' sung by Bappi himself with Sulakshana Pandit and 'Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi..' by Lata Mangeshkar and Shailendra Singh.

Bappi Lahiri sings for A. R. Rahman
By Vickey Lalwani 2006 Bollyvista.com

Bappi Lahiri
Bappi Lahiri has lent his voice to Mani Ratnam's forthcoming Abhishek-Aishwarya starrer 'Guru', set to tunes by A. R. Rahman. He has sung the title track.

Lahiri has known Rahman for more than two decades. He met him for the first time when he was composing a song for the Jetendra-Sreedevi starrer 'Himmatwala' in 1983.

Bappida's Comments

" I have given music for 400 films in 26 years, and I'm now very choosy and want to give good music every year like "Aankhen ", Sawaali Saloni teri jheel se aankhen. I have become a producer. It is my prediction that "Love Story '98 " will be the greatest musical hit of the year. Lovers of my music will enjoy the fresh and melodious music."

" I started disco music in Indian films, especially "Suraksha" , the first picture with Mithun, it was a phenomenal hit, and then I have given "Disco Dancer", and then it started like a Disco wave all over India. Young generation liked the songs of "Rambha Ho" in "Arman" and "Hari Om Hari" in "Pyaara Dushman", and my private album with Runa Laila named "Superuna" .

Bappida's Comments

" Loves Story 98 " 's music has been released by Venus, specially the song "Chun Liya Hain Lakhon Mein Jisee" and " Dewaana Hoon Tera ". For the first time Boy George, the British Pop Singer has sung and performed in "Love Story 98" along with another Pop star Aapche Indian, it is a song called Chachi . It is bound to be hit. My last movie was "Military Raaj" and the song " Balle Balle" is very popular. "

" Shankar Jaykishan, S. D. Burman , R. D. Burman and so many music directors previous got inspired by so many songs, so why condemn me and Anu Mallik ? The music also depends upon the producer and director who selects the songs and compositions. Good music is always remembered. "

Believe or not

Believe it or just faint, but the fact is that Jackie Chan is an ardent fan of Bappi Lahiri's music. At Bappi's recent birthday party, hosted by the roly poly music director at his palatial bungalow recently, the singer proudly stated that the international action star had confessed to him that he liked Dede Pani De his Sharabi number. Talks are afoot according to Lahiri for the background score for a Chan film by the latter. Way to go Bappida!

Bappida's Comments

" The media has created those myths, they need good gossip about music directors. Had I been bad I would never have been in this industry for the last 26 years. These days no original music is going, everything has been heard before. Old is Gold, that's why all my old film songs are being remixed and becoming hits " .

" Now I am not giving so many films because today in one film there are so many music directors and the music director becomes popular by a song composed by somebody else. This type of hotchpotch situation is something I donot want to be associated with. That is why I have goven my best music in "Love Story 98 ".

Cast:Rajnikanth , Aamir Khan , Juhi Chawla , Om Puri , Pooja Bedi , VadivukkarasiMusic:Bappi LahiriDirection:Dilip Shankar
Movie Name: Aandavan
Rating: .0
Review By: Balaji B
Rel Links: Listen Music , View Pictures
We have seen this done before by those who are out to make a quick buck - dig up old movies starring a newly popular star and dub them, with the star(who in all probability had a borderline role in the movie) now the center of attraction. Several of Kushboo's movies from other languages were dubbed in this way once she became a big star. Now its Rajnikanth's turn as one of his older and worse, eminently forgettable Hindi flicks makes its way to screens as Aandavan. With the only target audience being the fans of the star, overall quality of the end product is not high on the list of the people behind these movies. So the movies generally tend to be disappointing for all but the most hardcore fans of the star. But inspite of the less-than-stellar company, Aandavan is a disaster. A remake of Aatank Hi Aatank, which focussed on Aamir Khan's growth into a reluctant don, the movie becomes a vehicle for Rajnikanth, who plays Aamir's elder brother. But it is doubtful if even Rajni fans, who haven't seen their hero for over a year since Padaiyappa, will sit through this mess. The movie begins along the lines of Naayagan with the hero, a young boy who sees his parents being killed, murders the killer and runs off to Bombay(the scenes upto here have been reshot in tamil). There he is taken in by Sivasubramani, a man who has recently moved to Bombay from Madras. Sivasubramani grows to be a big don and the boy Mustafa(Rajnikanth) is his right hand man. There are several other dons in Bombay and their only agenda is to kill Sivasubramani. They manage to shoot Sivasubramani in broad daylight and this pushes his son Rakesh(Aamir Khan) into the same violent life led by his father and brother. The movie is nothing more than a collection of clips that Rajnikanth makes an appearance in, from the Hindi original. So we are completely lost as far as the other characters are concerned. Most of them come and go and we have no idea who they are since scenes which probably explained their background have been snipped away. Aamir Khan is reduced to a bystander for most of the movie and appears only for a duet with Juhi Chawla in the first half(his name appears after Vadivukkarasi's name in the credits, which should give you an idea of his importance in the scheme of things!). It is only after he becomes the focus of the movie that the moviemakers have reluctantly included scenes with him. With this state of things, it makes no sense analysing the story or loopholes in the movie. And from the collection of clippings, it can be gathered that the original hindi version was no classic! Direction is ham-handed and the actors appear wooden. Dialogs are stilted and artificial and sequences are boring when they are not laughable. To compound our misery, the tamil version ends abruptly in the middle of a fight sequence with a proclamation that "Aandavan's reign will continue!" Ofcourse I was glad that the ordeal had ended but some kind of closure would have been nice! If I didn't know the origins of this movie, I would have thought that I was seeing Rajnikanth parody his own image and style in tamil movies. His styles and actions seem exaggerated(the scene where he smashes the camera of a photographer at his sister's wedding seemed almost comical) and his discomfort with emotional scenes is evident in the scene where he cries to his father. Aamir Khan tries gamely to carry off the gangster role but looks extremely funny with the moustache and gelled hair. Deva has tuned some new songs and the lyrics are pepperred with enough personal references to Rajni to get his fans cheering.

This has been a particularly bad period as far as the quality of tamil movies goes. The last 10 movies in my 'Small Screen' section include only one 2-star movie and even that is a dubbed flick. Aandavan is easily the worst of the lot.But the silver lining is that after this, things can only get better.

After giving chartbusters recently collaborating with Daler Mehendi and Adnan Sami, the desi King of Hip-hop music Bappi Lahiri has got together with the Rap guru Apache Indian and Viva girl Anushka to render a very interesting number 'U Yara Rabba Tu Pyar De De', penned by lyricist Rahul B Seth. When the thought of this foot-tapping number came to Bappi Lahiri's mind for the Vijay Mukhi film Cabaret, the only man whom he could think of to do justice to the rap was Apache Indian.

"Apache is an oldfriend" said Bappi da. "It feels great singing with him." Apache shares the same sentiments as they rap together and enjoy the song. If the way the two music-makers were in tune and the vibrations they shared at the recording are any indication, it sure looks like Bappi da will rock the hip-hop charts with 'U Yara Rabba' once again!
