Profile

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is known internationally as the greatest living master of Bansuri, the North Indian bamboo flute. Chaurasia is among a few but growing classicists who have made a conscious effort to reach out and expand the audience for classical music. He is probably the most accessible Hindustani musician who has done a lot to popularize Bansuri and classical music among the masses. Hariprasad Chaurasia was born in Allahabad in 1938 into a non musical family. His father was a wrestler. His mother died when he was very young. Hariprasad had to learn music almost in secret, scared of the father who wanted him to become a wrestler. First he started learning vocal music from Pt. Rajaram at the age of 15. Later, he switched to playing the flute under the tutelage of Pt. Bholanath of Varanasi. Much later, while working for All India Radio, he received guidance from the reclusive Smt. Annapurna Devi (daughter of Baba Allaudin Khan ). Pt. Chaurasia is a rare combination of innovator and traditionalist. He has significantly expanded the expressive possibilities of North Indian classical flute through his masterful blowing technique. Hariprasad Chaurasia is one of the busiest North Indian classical musicians, regularly traveling and performing throughout the world. Apart from classical music, he has made a mark as a hindi film music director along with Pt Shivkumar Sharma forming a group called Shiv-Hari. He has also combined with various world musicians at experimental music, including the famous group Shakthi.

The great Indian master of the North Indian Bamboo Flute has won a number of prestigious awards including the Sangeet Natak Academy (1984), Padmabhushan (1992) and Padma Vibhoosan (2000).

Hariprasad / Zakir Hussain

Hariprasad / Zakir Hussain
A child prodigy, Zakir Hussain was already touring by the age of twelve as a tabla master. He came to the U.S. in 1970, embarking on an international career that continues to include no fewer than 150 concert dates each year. The favorite accompanist to many of his native India's greatest musicians -- from Ali Akbar Khan to Ravi Shankar -- he is considered a national treasure and a true phenomenon.

A classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order, he is acclaimed both in the field of percussion as well as in the music world at large; his contributions to world music include such historic collaborations as Shakti (which he founded with John McLaughlin), Diga Rhythm Band and Planet Drum with Mickey Hart, and recordings and performances with artists as diverse as George Harrison, Van Morrison, Tito Puente, Pharoah Sanders, Jack Bruce, Billy Cobham, and the Hong Kong Symphony.

Hariprasad Chaurisia began his musical training under the tutelage of Shri Bholanath, then went on to complete his education with Shrimati Annapurna Devi, daughter of the famed Ustad Allaudin Khan. It was through Khan's influence that the bansuri -- a simple but subtle bamboo flute -- was developed as a classical instrument in Indian music by the late Pannalal Ghosh. Hariprasad is considered a consummate master.

The Bansuri flute is one of the three original forms of rendering Indian Classical music according to ancient scriptures - Vaani (Vocal), Veena (String) and Venu (Flute). According to Hindu mythology, it is the instrument of Lord Krishna and is thus very popular for playing folk music. The introduction of the flute in modern Indian Classical concerts has been rather recent however, and the late Pandit Pannalal Ghosh has been widely recognized for this achievement.

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia further enhanced the bansuri playing style, with his innovative fingering and blowing techniques and took bansuri music to yet higher level.

The Hindustani bansuri flute usually consists of a blowing hole, six fingering holes and one tuning hole (though in some cases, flutes do not have tuning hole). The pitch of the bansuri varies depending on the length and diameter of the bore. The longer the flute, the deeper its pitch. However, longer flutes are also difficult to blow and finger. To balance this tradeoff, most Hindustani bansuri players tend to choose bansuri with pitch E (safed teen) and this flute is approximately 30" long.

Naturally, the bamboo suitable to make bansuri is not available freely. In its entire length, the flute bamboo should not have a node. If you think about it, it is not common to find a bamboo that is thin, straight and yet does not have a node for 30". Such bamboo species are only found in the jungles of Indian states of Assam and Kerala. Before making the flute, the bamboo is seasoned so that the natural resins strengthen it. It is then blocked with a piece of cork or rubber stopper from one end. Holes are then burned into it as drilling holes often breaks the bamboo. The proportions between bamboo length, bore, diameter of each hole and the location of stopper cork are extremely critical for getting the tuning of the bansuri right. Strings are then tied around the bamboo for both decoration and protection.

The Bansuri is a versatile instrument. It can easily produce all basic elements of Hindustani music variation such as meend (glide), gamak, kan. Versatile bansuri players also produce emotions in their music through variations in blowing style.

The Bansuri is a very simple instrument. Unlike string instruments, it does not need tuning once it is tuned by the flute maker. However, as Hariji puts it, it is Krishna's instrument and the Lord has made it deceptively simple. To become adept in the bansuri, one needs many months of practice.
