Hello all – the Retro Caf – the IF Podcast series is back with another Blast from the past: Retro caf Episode #8: Madan Mohan Special!!!

Madan Mohan Kohli (June 25, 1924 - July 14, 1975), better known as Madan Mohan, was a famed Bollywood film music director of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. He is particularly remembered for the ghazals he composed for the film industry, mainly using the voice of India's Melody Queen, Lata Mangeshkar. The characateristics of Madan's music which made him unique even as one of the few 'greats' among the Hindi film composers of the 1950-1980 period are: one, in the area of his native Indian classical music, an extremely keen and sensitive ear with passion for the absolute purity and heart-stirring qualities of svar, sruti and raga with choice 'life-throbbing pakads' (or 'jeev-sanchars'), and two, in the area of Western classical music, a profound appreciation of the emotional appeal of the harmonies and the synthesis of notes of different instruments and of different pitches, and three, an ability to blend these two abilities to produce a new type of classical-filmi' music, as it were, which even classically minded listeners and the masses could love to listen to and enjoy for the sheer impact it had. Although the other greats like Shankar-Jaikishan, Nayyar, Naushad, Jaidev, and Roshan, to name some, too used a certain mixture of Indian and Western classical musical ideas in composing Hindi music film, they were more or less similar in their concept of film music, but let Madan stand apart with his uniqueness, as it were.
