When copying machine came around for the first time, people were surprized. What an invention. It looked just like original. But that was machines, with no brains.
Music directors with brains and who copy well has been there for times immemorial.Copying music and altering it and making new tunes is not an easy thing. you are taking risk to your reputation. But who cares about reputation, hardly any body is original.
Now let us go into what it takes to copy a song. You have to study lot of tunes.Choose one you like. Than alter it in a way that it make sense.
Say I have to copy "jhalak dilkhla ja.."jhalak dikhla ja..It is not easy to alter it.Try altering it yourself. I am trying to alter it ..jhalalk dilkhla ja re meri jaan , jhalak dikhla ja re meri jaan. what the heck is that..that sounds too long....let me alter it in a different way. jhalak dikhlao ji, jhalak dikhlao ji, what the heck is that ...sounds like some thing else, sounds funny to me.
So I have to confess to myself..I am not good enough to alter a song, so I am not even dreaming about writing an original song. you have to be true to yourself. You must know where you stand. That is a good insight and good Judgement on your part. Now you are close to becoming a super hit Music director/composer/writer.
Now there will be three kind of music directors. No1. Jhalak dlikhla ja meri jaan type.... they are likely to fail, even though some people may think them to be original. No 2 Jhalak dikhlao ji kind ..you will soon find them out on the road with lotta in hand "Garib ke lotte mein daal de kuch baba, bada punya hoga"..Now No 3 Jhalka dikhla ja kind..no altering pure original...people may blame them for copying but they are going to be at the top.
Our wise elders have said, "nakal mein bhi akal chahiye".It applies very well creating(copying) new songs/tunes. People who have limitations and and understand that and don't make any alterations are the real street smart people. Street smart always rules. What you think about street smart people in our film line especially music industry(since this is saregama thread)
