I think it is a real shame that hardly any women entered the field of music direction and film direction. The latter still has some well-known names such as Sai Paranjpe, Meera Nair, Deepa Mehta etc but I just don't know any woman music director apart from Usha Khanna! Hope this doesn't indicate lack of creativity on the part of women!

Women have been so successful in acting and singing. Wonder why they didn't venture into music directing...

I think Usha Khanna started off with a bang with Dil Deke Dekho for none other than Nasir Hussain. It can be counted among Shammi Kapoor's top three musical hits. The music was very peppy and very lively with songs like..bade hain dil ke kale, yaar chulbula hain, dil deke dekho, raahi mil gaye rahon mein, pyaar ho toh kehdo yes, megha re bole, and ofcourse the unforgettable..Hum aur tum aur yeh sama.... Later on as she says, she must not have been able to play by the rules hence suffered. But whatever little chance she was given, she has proved to be a versatile and good composer.
As said in the article she was very young when she is supposed to have directed Dil Deke Dekho and there were several allegations that somebody else had ghost directed it for her. But she has always said that she is gifted like OP was.She considers him to be her mentor and Guru. Even her compositions in her first movie are similar to those of OP.
just one anecdote...When she had composed a duet in her first film with Rafi Sahab and Ashaji, she was not happy with the way Rafi Sahab was rendering a particular line. Ushaji was very tense as she didn't want to go and instruct the great Rafi Sahab. She instead went to Ashaji and told her about it. Asha ji, in her charateristic straight forwardness, took her straight to Rafi Sahab and told him her reservations. Rafi sahab smiled and told the young girl, you are the composer, so right now you are my guru. I will sing as you will tell me to, and henceforth you can approach me directly.
Then on Rafi Sahab has sang a great number of songs for her. The story goes that when Rafi Sahab heard the composition of Tu is tarah se meri jindagi mein shamil hain...he was so impressed and happy that he immdiately called Ushaji to congratulate her and bless her. He even thanked her for giving him such a wonderful composition.
She has composed consistently for her husband and given hits after hits. The three all time hits form this jodi are.

Lata Mangeshkar gave music to 4 or 5 Marathi films under the name "Anandaghana" and the music was great. And all her songs became immensely popular. The story goes that the producers started lining behind her and that started affecting her brother who himself was a successful composer then.

I am not much of a Usha Khanna fan but I like few of her songs very much. I will post them separately. But I must admire her for surviving so long in the field that is totally and completely dominated by male MDs.

i liked the thought-provoking nature of your topic post. am sorry to see it veer off into arcane name-dropping trivia... wld primarily love to hear viewpoints that address the theme of what you wrote. minor technicalities cld be offered as an aside. just my POV

I never knew that Usha Khanna had such good compositions to her name 👏 👏 👏

As Punjini'ji correctly pointed out, very few women have tried to foray into the field of direction. music and films.. may be if they would have we would have got some great movies...

I think Sudha Malhotra also tried to compose a couple of songs and I guess 'Tummujhe bhool hi jao ki yeh haq hai tumko' is her composition (though not sure)... As for directors are concerned, we have had very good film makers in Aparna Sen, Deepa Mehta, Meera Nair and Sai Paranjape... I think Meghana Gulzar (Gulzar's daughter) did a fine job in Filhaal as well..

Thanks musicpulse for nice addition to this thread. And thanks punjini and Jaya for providing the female point of view. And thanks all others for responding.

I am awaiting for more responses from other esteem ladies on this forum -- Varshaji, srianne, nonny, Zahida, mdroy, chukki, deepa, angelique, sangeeta, seema...anyone care to answer my questions? Where have you all gone?

One thing that I noted is that the male directors daughters followed their fathers footsteps in some cases, like Puja Bhatt. But MDs daughters remained content with singing, like Salil Chaudhary's daughter, Hemant Kumar's daughter. Why did they not think of following their fathers footsteps?

By the way are there any example of "a famous daughter of a famous father" in Hindi film music (music direction and singing)? I can't thinks of any of the top of my head. Lataji's father was in music but only on Marathi stage. Hemantda's and Salilda's daughters never achieved the level of their fathers. Anyone else?

I think this is a global phenomenon because I don't know any female music composers in the realm of Western Classical. We only know about male composers like Mozart,Beethoven, Vivaldi etc.

Why music, take any field - politics for example. There have been no female US Presidents. There are not many women CEOs.

It might be due to suppression of women over the centuries. In India, girls grow up in an atmosphere where they are not allowed a lot of freedom, unlike boys who can do what they please. Girls are told to behave modestly, be good and in general, tow the line. This has brought about a conformist mindset among women which will take years and years to shake off.

At one time, women thought that the only profession allowed to them was teaching (that too school kids only). Gradually, other fields opened to them. It is only recently that women began to fly aeroplanes.

So I think it is a question of time before women feel empowered enough to make a niche for themselves in male dominated fields.
