During the past few hundreds of years, many foreigners have found interest in Indian classical traditions and have adopted them. In addition people like Pt.Ravi Shankar have promoted Indian arts abroad to such an extent that certain US Universities like Wesleyan offer courses in Indian classical music. I thought it would be interesting to post and share info on foreigners who entered Indian Classical Arts.
One man who just comes up to my mind is John Higgins. He came from Connecticut, USA to Madras to learn Carnatic Classical and became a top performer. Here is some info about him.
This musician from the West, not only absorbed and assimilated the nuances, intricacies and finesse of Carnatic music but became one of its finest performing artistes. Having trained under the renowned flautist T Viswanathan, he acquired the rich heritage of the Vina Dhanammal bani. He left a lasting impression on connoisseurs and laymen alike, with his sincerity, dedication, understanding and involvement. He served as a cultural link between the West and East.
