i think the ethics of it all depends on the objectives. if it's a singing competition, then in my opinion any form of Digital Signal Processing is a no-no. it's cheating.

on the other hand, if the objective is to entertain, then i wld argue that good ethics dictates that one use all available means and technologies to deliver the best sound. to not do so means depriving people of the best you can produce.

in terms of technology, the easier applications are off-line in a studio setting. technician can play the track repeatedly, determine the entire frequency response spectrum and modify the track almost at will.

in a real-time setting, such as a live show, things get trickier. the analog sound has to be processed in a few instants, decoded into different frequencies. then the sound technician has to determine, again in real-time, as to which notes or frequencies to modify. if the singer is known to always sing at certain frequencies and occasionally go off frequency, then the technician can apply a pre-set transform. else, the frequencies have to be modulated almost on the spur of the moment. partly that is the technician's ability. there are also algorithms which help detect and forecast "errors" and correct them on the fly. when i was in college, we looked at Kalman Filters and the like, but do not know which algorithms have actually been applied commercially.

but let's take an example from the IT world. Before Bill Gates and Windows came along, we had Unix. Unix was considered a far superior and stable operating system, but it was not accessible to most people since it was harder to use. what Windows did was bring in user-friendliness. in terms of growth in the IT world, what subsequently happened was companies began to divert research focus and dollars to "GUI", user-friendly screens and technology. development of computational algorithms stalled, and it is still lagging perhaps 10 years in terms of where the GUI oriented technology is today. in some ways, the new emphasis made all technology more "accessible" to common folks. in other ways, it diverted focus from other important developments. but some of that focus is now returning and we now have easy-to-use technologies to help revitalize that process.

i'd think something similar is happening in music. when the dust settles, we just might have more people plugged into music, and we might get some of the great musical styles of the past brought back to life in greater numbers...

point is to just illustrate trends in two separate industries. when we gripe about HR or anyone, well he is part of the music industry. we are comparing industries- all industries have people, technology etc. The music industry is no different in that sense. No comparison is being made between "kampooters" and "moosic". Sorry if the point was not comprehensible. Maybe i'll provide an easy "kunji" next time.

Imagine if the "pitch correction" facility was not available and we had listen to certain "performers" In their actual voices! 😊
