hey soulsoup...just heard from one of our best common friends in this forum...that he concurs with what you mentioned about this song being influenced by rabindra sangeet and not strictly set to Khamaj...

Anyways, let me go through the wonderful info provided above by osoniare...

here is the additional inputs from this 'special friend', via PM...

"Rabindra Sangeet was influenced by ragas, folk music and also a touch of western music (Rabindranath Tagore was a genius in taking complicated stuff and making them simple). That's why "piyu bole" even though inspired by rabindra sangeet shows some shades of khamaj but like I said earlier, it isn't purely khamaj."

Asavari.org is a good website but the only problem is that the songs are not searchable. You can go mad trying to find the raga of a particular song. Secondly, a number of songs have been placed under two ragas. You can check it out.

Will anyone help me in letting me know the base-raga for the songs:
Hai re woh dino kyon na aaye (Anuradha)(My guess is Pilu)
Zindagi jab bhi tere bazm (Umrao Jaan) (My guess is Yaman Kalyan)
